The way duels work in MP8 is that if the one that uses the candy (aka duel initiator) wins then they get a chance to take stars while if the one that was pulled into the duel by the initiator, the prize is less. Since it is more difficult to get a duel to happen, they made the punishment lesser on the initiator to make them more likely to use it.

@@Endershock1678 perhaps I was being a bit harsh (I’d literally just woken up when I wrote that comment lol), but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect someone to remember the vague position of the 1 space they want to avoid. He shouldn’t remember exactly where it was in the carriage but he should know at the very least that it’s near the end. There’s never anything important at the start of the carriages so if he didn’t remember its position he should’ve rolled low for his last turn, avoiding the risk. Even I could’ve told you that and I’ve never touched this map, my only experience with it being this video, let alone had I been playing it for an hour and it’s my favourite game. Like if you ask me right now to avoid the bank at the start of Bowser Land; I don’t remember exactly where it is (I think it’s like 4 or 5 from the start) I’m going to roll a 1 or 2 on my last turn to be safe, that kind of thing. But I can see where you’re coming from, it’s an easy mistake to make. I guess it just rubbed me wrong that Vern chose to blame Eevee for it when he had a lot of other options he could’ve taken to avoid what happened. Plus hey, it didn’t even matter in the end, I don’t think the standings shifted at all because of that play.

for a bit of clarity on how dueling works, if the challenger (the one initiating the duel, aka who ever just rolled) wins the duel the dart board will have stars or coins, if the defender wins it's only coins on the dart board
