Hi friends, today I spent the morning in the gardener puttering around. I'm trying out some new bug netting to see if I can't eliminate the cabbage moths. The cabbage moths have gotten so bad in the last few years around here! I also spent some time in the high tunnel pruning tomatoes and trellising the giant Amish paste tomatoes.I also got my morning chores done in the barn. i hope you enjoy coming along with me.

We soak our broccoli and cauliflower in salted water. This usually draws the worms out. I also will halve my cabbage and soak them as well.

Hello from eastern Ontario!! My trick for blossom end rot is that I keep my banana peels and put them in a large jar filled with water, after a couple weeks i strain the remaining peels out and use about a cup or two into a five gallon bucket and water my tomatoes and pepper plants with that. I use this application only once I see tomatoes/peppers starting to form. The results have been flawless!! I hope this helps!

Many years ago I planted a 3 inch pot of lemon balm in a raised bed. Several years later it was all over my farm. It spreads under ground and also drops a ton of seeds. A doubt whammy!!!

When we lived in Alaska, broccoli and cauliflower were so easy to grow....no problems with insects!

When I was a kid, my mother always bought bushels of broccoli from our local farmers market to blanch and freeze. She always filled the sink with salty water before blanching and the caterpillars all crawled out. It was so gross!!!

We had cabbage root fly lay eggs, for the first time last year on every Brassica. All the plants looked healthy one day, the next day all weepy and limp. Pulled them out, and every one of their root systems were covered in white larvae having a feast. This year I put on a net as soon as I planted, and so far so good. Love watching your garden grow. Even tho I’ve lived in Hinton Alberta for 30 years, I did live in Williams lake for 4 years prior, and grew up in Kamloops. Everywhere I go a garden is a must have, both floral and veggie.

I feel your pain about the mint! I put my greenhouse over the top of where the previous people who lived here had planted mint........ it comes up every year all around the greenhouse like a green wall! Seriously resilient stuff!

Back in the 60's all store brought broccoli and cauliflower had to be soaked in salt water to get rid of the bugs. It's like the little worms that are inside raspberries. To this day I can't eat raspberries! At the farm they had an open 50 gal barrel of molasses and they would tell us kids to stay away from the molasses, but to kids who didn't get candy that molasses tasted sweet. We would get a stick to move all the dead flies to one side and then stick our fingers into the molasses. Oh what a treat. The molasses was put into the cows feed to increase milk production (cows\feed\milk as a kid I really didn't pay attention). Thanks for the bug memories)

Soil usually has enough calcium. It's inconsistent watering that inhibits the calcium uptake from soil into the plants.

I used those fiberglass hoops. They didn't last the season. I'm in Arizona so I'm pretty sure the heat had a lot to do with their demise. I like just plain pvc pipe bent....lasts forever.

Those hoops are the same technology used for hiking tent frames. I'm surprised this is the first time I've seen it used in the garden. When it comes to using pesticides, wither natural or not, it'll result in pesticide resistant bugs. Always better to use physical barrier or traps.

We use the same netting for rabbits, deer, and white moths. Works great! Definitely best to put them on the day you plant out.

When covering your brassica with netting don't leave any holes or tiny gaps . The butterfly will find it and you will have them under the netting .

I love making jelly from flowers! I’ve done lilac,and dandelion so far, I didn’t realize peonies could be used. I will definitely be making fireweed jelly to when they flower. Bees look so complicated to care for,I think I will stick to supporting our local bee keepers instead. Your work ethic and values inspire me daily,I am thankful for LMR,my fav homestead channel ~

So needed this today. And the snap are gorgeous and yes pelleted carrot seeds are wonderful. And so is clover seeds if you every try that anywhere. So easy to see if you filled in the ground properly. Whoever invented that seed process deserves many many hugs...The herb bed is wonderful. Yes mint is incredibly invasive how crazy that is. Oh you teach me so much and I love my gardening. Is there a way of telling if a tomato is derminate or indeterminate without knowing what you bought because the seed packs or tags do not always say. I so admire bee keepers it is so so facinating. I have a love for them but as well a bit apprehensive and most likely would be terrified doing this. This was such a well needed video for me today again. hugs and luv

Hi Chelsea. I was able to get a 10 x 4 raised garden plot in our community garden in Agassiz, BC this year. Yay for me. I planted 2 sweet , & 2 hot pepper plants, and 4 cherry tomato plants, and alot of herbs. I'm wondering if I need to prune the suckers off the tomatoes??? (We've had a lot of rain here, and still more to come). Also, do I need to shake the plants to polinate them? I'm asking because I'm almost 60, & have never garden before in my life! Also, I've tried to find out through google what "zone" I am in, and I can't decipher it. Ps - I love your channel, and ALL your content!! You amaze me,.. for real!! Again, So sorry for your loss! That’s exciting! You don’t need to pollinate them outside, nature will do that for you. Yes, definitely stake them. My mom says not to prune cherry tomatoes for the best harvest (I don’t grow them often). Do prune the bottom leaves 6 inches up and if you do notice it’s looking sickly you can prune off the yellowing leaves, too. Good luck!😊

That was interesting, about your cats. I thought they were all free roaming within the farm. I also wanted to share that for the first time I have successfully grown something from seed. I have grown Microgreens which are delicious. I also grew some cilantro. I’m waiting on the garlic, carrots, peppers, and tomatoes. I’m having trouble with the lettuce. I think I planted them too close and they reached a certain point and just stopped growing. All this indoors in my apartment. We have way too many different kinds of birds (and spiders) in my area for me to put these outside on the balcony. But between the grow lights and afternoon sun that comes in they get plenty of light and fresh air with open windows. I also only used filtered water. I’m really excited. It’s been a lot of work but I’ve really been inspired by your videos and decided to give it a try.

Leaves may need chelated iron (EDDHA). This has helped my yellowing leaves with the veins showing.

An old timer told me that soil is rarely calcium deficient, it’s the plant’s inability to draw it up . He told me to use an epsom salt solution. It worked. Thought I’d pass it along.

if you're going to go through the work of emptying the soil in your herb bed don't move it just lay down several layers of cardboard before you refill it.

That drywall dust will prevent blossom end rot on your tomatoes, it's made from calcium. Any bits left from the Reno can be crushed and added to the garden. It really works great!

Hi Chelsea- The Lemonbalm yellow leaves might be it reacting to being too wet. As well, thinning out the plant so that it has airflow might help. I would avoid watering it-let it dry out then water ( hard to do with the rain!) They love sun and dry heat. It should rebound quickly.

I have those same hoops. I had to start covering my brassicas a few years ago due to cabbage moths. I was ready to give up on growing broccoli and cauliflower. Covering has worked great! I grew enough broccoli last year to get us to Match without having to buy it. I'm trying to grow even more broccoli this year, but our weather isn't cooperating. Hopefully my fall harvest will be more productive.

Just put your broccoli in cold salt water and all the bugs will float to the top. Then rinse and process. I am freeze drying cabbage this year so I can use them in stir fry and for soups.

I was wondering if dollar store pool noodles with some cheap PVC piping at each end would work..the noodles are a little tacky to the touch so the plastic would adhere a bit better..just a thought

Hi, perhaps the dark green clips will fit over the silver connector pieces better because those are a bit thicker ? Or you could put an extra piece of cloth over the pipe before you add the clips.

Those clips that are to big, fit perfectly on pex or emt hoops. 👍🏻 I put card board & weed barrier down, under a raised bed 3 years ago. Now my garlic bed is FULL of mint. From deep under. Looking forward to your frozen Bok Choi. Love it fresh & suateed. But waiting on someone else to try frozen first.

Hi Chelsea. I am so excited to have tomatoes on my micro dwarfs now. I can’t wait for them to ripen. I remember mum use to always throw her broccoli and cauliflower in salt water to draw out the worms. So I do that too. Your garden looks awesome. I should have said roasted. I use a cookie sheet with a little olive oil.
