I found out the hard way. "Normal" mode gives you access to both HAM and GMRS frequencies. If you select HAM mode, GMRS frequencies are locked out...and vice versa. Actually a cool feature.

Also, if you're using CHIRP, you will need to select the radio to match the mode you have it in. TD-H3 is Normal, TD-H3-HAM is HAM, TD-H3-GMRS is GMRS mode. If you try to read/write tot he radio with the wrong one selected, it shall not read nor write.

Love your videos! 2 things in the h3(had mine for a couple months now): "normal " mode is full unlock(so im told) If you leave it in dual watch, your PTT buttonS will allow for dual transmit. Channel a on the top button, channel b on the middle. Hope this helps someone!

The unit I got seems to show right around 5W H power on GMRS and 2W L on the same Surecom meter. For folks with a 3D printer you can find free STLs of USB C dust plugs. For what it's worth I tested the TD-H3 scramble talking to my Baofeng UV17R Plus scramble modes 1/2/3 and messages were still scrambled each way.

I like the features of the H3 and just received my 2nd. I like how small it is. One of the only things about it that I don’t like is the speaker, too much treble. But that’s not a problem if you just put an earpiece in. I hit my favorite repeater 53 miles away while on a road trip just using a Nagoya 701g antenna.

Hey Randy, when you review a radio, can you please let us know if it is weather resistant and/or shock resistant as well? I would appreciate such knowledge as it is important to me for various reasons. Some reasons are 1) I am a Hoss(hard on stupid shit!)2) I, unlike most people, live in the real world outside most of the time.3) I am rather energetic and adventurous. Rain and obstacle courses excite me for some strange reason. 4) Due to the stated above reasons, I tend to destroy many things, especially radios not designed for rugged use and wet work. I can tell you this radio has no IP rating, and it's from titradio, so it's going to be on the low end as far as weather/shock resistance. It's heavier than others of it's size so it feels "tougher", but that's mostly just because it has a bigger battery

Good overall description. On my H3, Chirp has had a problem with the power level setting. The version I downloaded when I got my H3 required that the power level be set to M instead of H for “5W” output. The subsequent version of Chirp got worse in that there was no way to set H power. I corrected this using ODMaster. Otherwise, I love the H3 and will probably replace my H8 with a second H3.

To answer your question about the voice scrambling feature @19:14 in your video. That scrambling system is called "frequency inversion", It's an all analog, non cryptographic system that does nothing more then turn your voice "in side, out". This is legal to use on both Ham and GMRS band since it doesn't use any cryptography.

​@@TheNotaRubicon I forgot to mention in my previous post that F.I can also be used to improve the sound quality of an FM transmission. If you're not aware. When an FM signal becomes weak, the High frequencies degrade before the low frequencies do. By applying F.I. to the audio, it helps move the voice frequencies to the lower part of the audio spectrum and thus, helps improve the quality of the sound during a weak signal. F.I. is not technically an obfuscation system because it does not require any special secret setting or crypto keys to work. Granted, anyone that doesn't have a radio with F.I. won't be able to hear an F.I. signal. But that's no different the trying to listen to an FM signal with a radio that can only do AM.
