I do genealogy professionally and it’s lead me to do deep research into the Cornish part of mother’s family history (mainly because they are the only part of my lineage with enough bread to have good records kept REALLY far back). So I found all these records of a dispute in the mid 1500s between my 14th great grandfather and another landed “gentleman”. Essentially another man (I assume a trusted friend) passed and left his heir as a ward (I’ve forgotten the actual terminology used then) to great grandpops, and he was supposed to handle the affairs of collecting rents and maintaining the fiefs rented out that belonged to this kid. Another knight allegedly started taking over these plots of land and charging the people living on them to his own pocket. So great-grandpa x 14 took him to literal court. He bitched to the King at the time and took up the issue there. I’ve yet to find the results of what happened, because I live across the pond and don’t have access to all the non-digitalized records in Kew. Yet. I have plans to go eventually.

Basic armour at that time, the hauberk, was not expensive. Padded cloth reinforced by small iron plates was, just, in reach of every peasant, as sen in the Armed Man folksong, which made it into the classical repertoire courtesy of Guillaume Dufay in the 1430s. Yes, 80 remixes later it's near the top of the Classical hit parade, in Sir Karl Jenkins' cantata.

The Nobility did not fall to archers. The Nobility wore the last and best generation of Plate Armor. It was their horses that fell. Yes, even the horses were armored, but most of that armor was to the front. Heavy Cavalry was supposed to be at its best in Frontal Assaults. But, it became the preferred tactic for Archers on the Medieval Battlefield to position themselves so they could shoot the enemy horses in their butts. Really, that is what the Islamic Light Cavalry tried to do during the crusades, that is to get behind the Frankish Heavy Cavalry and drop their horses by shooting them in their unarmored rear ends. Besides, a Dead Knight is worth nothing, but a Knight held Prisoner could be held for ransom. And being a Prisoner was no serious ordeal, because Knights lived by Honor and could be trusted to be men of their Word, so they would be taken to England and be sworn to Not Leave Town, and would in effect be given the keys to the city. They'd be invited to Dinners and be asked to dance at Balls. They had hundreds of illegitimate children. It got to the point where the Englishmen were ready to pay the ransoms for the French Knights just to get them out of London and their wives' bedchambers. . And, yeah, individual knights could greatly influence the outcome of battles. Reading the Legends of King Arthur might give you some idea of the power of Champions. As I said before, with full armor , before Gun Powder, the only thing that could kill them would be another knight incapacitating them and taking off enough of their helmet so they could cut the throat. Well, even unhorsed a Champion Knight would be formidable, as as Commanders of their own Brigades, their subordinates would give up their horses to their Champions. And Champions were practiced at being able to incapacitate less stalwart knights and cutting their throats. Really, that's what a Battle was, where the best knights rode about eliminating the best knights from among their enemy, and once one side no longer had any plausible Champions left, the rest would retreat, because, there was no surviving against these Champions.... they would have Tournaments and so everybody knew everybody elses' competitive rankings.... everybody knew who the Winners and Losers would be in any given contest. They lived by Honor but the survivors would not be suicidal about it.
