Is it strange to think that Titanium is overkill here? The same case shape, same matte/polish breakdown would probably still look great in Steel, and the overall watch would be a little less dark. I appreciate the layout, the design, the shape. If all that was the same, but steel case, cream dial, blued hands, I think that'd work better for me. That said, the watch is a price bracket or two out of reach for me. I don't think it's an unfair price, given the thinness and finish, but it's for someone else's budget.
@theclocker740620 күн бұрын
That sure is a very beautiful and elegant watch, with lovely contemporary art deco vibes. Love the finish and colour palette. However, as with so many microbrands now, it is just ridiculously expensive, especially for a hand wound movement. I really miss the days when microbrands used to make genuinely affordable watches with unique designs. That kind of price is just not realistically affordable for a great many of us these days, especially those of us who don't get a good exchange rate against the US$.
@CanadianEhHole20 күн бұрын
Are you saying they're getting more expensive or that your currency has been devalued to the point where you're now paying significantly more? While these both end up with you paying more for the same watch, it's not the same cause.
@theclocker740620 күн бұрын
@@CanadianEhHole A good question. Microbrands have definitely gotten a lot more expensive over the past few years in general, with prices that began steadily creeping upwards, now having leaped to be on a par with many Swiss makes, instead of undercutting them like they once used to. If manufactures such as San Martin, for example, can produce extremely high quality watches for less than $500, why can't more microbrands do something similar anymore? The steady price rises seen amongst microbrands has made them appear far less competitive and affordable for a lot of collectors (perhaps this is why so many micro brands have been disappearing lately). There has also been a continuing weakness in a number of foreign currencies over the past year that are not the US$ (and this is hardly likely to improve with Trump's threatened tariffs). Naturally I appreciate these are not the same causes, but they have resulted in a double impact on microbrand watches that are priced in US$, causing them to become increasingly unaffordable as a result. I hope that better explains my point.

Agree this is an excellent looking, original timepiece. Closer to 1k and it’s an instant buy. 1.5k for a new unproven brand is a getting a little steep. For reference I have more expensive timepieces from well known brands so when I look to try a new brand, price is a motivating factor.

I like it. Enough that I bought one with the black dial. It should arrive next week. So, I'm greatly looking forward to having it in my hands and on my wrist very soon! Why did I get it? Something about the design I couldn't stop thinking about since it was announced and shown. Also, I'm primarily a tool and sports watch person. Although I like many dress watch designs and the idea of owning one, the few I have owned have never stayed. I feel this Rivanera is maybe a kind of anti-dress watch. Idk? The case design, material and finish sort of gives it a tool or sports watch vibe. I'm thinking and hoping this may be more inline with my design preferences and fit right in with my other watches in my collection.

This piece is absolutely fabulous in person. I love Cartier and tank-esque cases. But there are enough design elements in both the variants to make them stand out on their own in any collection. The matte titanium and dark color tones give it a very brutalist vibe for that everyday subtle wear. Yet those polished bevels and edges, along with the choice of polished indices is contradicting enough for you to dress it up easily. I love the look of the averau 39 from echo/neutra… but in a world with so many options for a sports watch to specifically cater to your tastes, echo neutra have found a way to stand out.

@KabobHope11 күн бұрын
This thinness and choice of titanium make this an interesting watch. The movement is fascinating and beautiful. I see they're trying for an modern interpretation of the tank. In my opinion, since the tank is generally such a small watch it's better with a simple white face. As a personal thing I don't think I could ever get used to that logo with the / in it. Just looks both mundane an modern in my opinion.
@AneggoctopuS20 күн бұрын

@Horizontalvertigo20 күн бұрын
Crazy that people are looking at a Swiss made watch, with an expensive handwound movement, in very nicely finished grade 5 titanium, with an overall height below 6mm & saying "WhY iS It so ExPEnSivE???" Would I prefer it if it were $500 cheaper? Sure. But pretending that it's bad value when a Must de Cartier is $2000 more? C'mon.
@b_altmann16 күн бұрын
Nice idea to sort of stretch a Tank Normale and make it from titanium. The logo fits with the modern approach, but the rest does not. Especially the subdial is very much from a different era. The minute track has elements from a Cintrée or Américaine, but Cartier do make modern takes on their classics and that should have been the way here.

Thanks for the review! There's a lot to like about the brand, and I appreciate the attempt to put a modern spin on the tank genre, but TBH the Rivenera is not for me. I don't have an issue with tank watches in general, but in this case I find the design and offered colorways to be a bit bland and inexpensive-looking, especially for a $1500 watch. But maybe in the metal it offers a more luxurious feel.

$1500 ??? Why ? 😂 somehow titanium doesn’t translate well to dressy.
@mattbec19 күн бұрын
I'm intrigued, but I think it needs to be solidly sub $1k to represent VFM. I'm going to take a guess that their thought process was it's about $500 in movement and materials, put another $500 in operations costs and taxes, and they want to take about $500 real profit. The problem is that at USD$1,500 for the Rivanera, it's not a big ask to wait longer, save another $1,500 which is attainable for most persons with dedication, and get an actual Cartier Tank.
@Horizontalvertigo17 күн бұрын
@@mattbec crazy to talk about VFM & then say "buy a Cartier Tank" Sure, I'd love a solar tank, but I'm not going to pretend that the "Cartier" on the dial makes $3500+USD for a quartz, steel tank actually good value.
@anthonypinto600715 күн бұрын
Gosh that's a terrible opinion. I can tell you're more interested in luxury status and public approval than you are into horological engineering. This is NOT a budget tank. This is for men that are repulsed by or disinterested in that trite feminine French brand. Cartier does not hold dominion over the rectangular shape case either. Don't worry, no ones stopping you from being "dedicated" enough to drive to your local luxury mall and buying a Cartier for you and your wife. But dear god let the rest of us enjoy this Italian titanium piece without your dismissal. Bonus eyerolling for actually typing "VFM". Yikes.
@mattbec10 күн бұрын
@ the value is not because of the logo in and of itself, but because the Cartier Tank is the cult icon classic that it remains, and if you want a piece of that history there is only one way to get it. I appreciate something similar to maybe scratch an itch if the original is unattainable in price, but in this case both are attainable pieces and relatively close in price.
@anthonypinto600710 күн бұрын
@@mattbec "but because the Cartier Tank is the cult icon classic that it remains" - this is exactly what I was talking about. You are more interested in public approval than the engineering, design, or function. And if you seek validation from the herd, then yes, the Cartier is for you my friend.
@Horizontalvertigo9 күн бұрын
@@mattbec I'd argue that if you actually want to be part of that history you'd be better off buying a cheaper Tank-style watch to tide you over whilst saving for a Tank Louis. Buying a Must de Cartier is being part of the history of the luxury watch world going "oh no" during the quartz crisis, & that comes from someone who owns one. On top of that, I assure you, in terms of affordability there are more people out there by several orders of magnitude who could barely stretch to cover 1.5k & think that 3.5k is totally out of reach, than people who honestly look at those numbers & think they're basically equivalent.
@duketogo66620 күн бұрын
The branding on the dial just kills it for me. The manual wind will be a pain in the neck if you daily it. The octagonal crown is likely annoying to wind. As the owner of Zenith Shadow, I can say that a blasted case looks cool but you’ll never find a bracelet to match and even straps you will have to move the original buckle over.

40 lug-to-lug on a flat ass case has me worried. Wish they made it 37mm or curved the case down. IMO, this watch is best for large wrists, 7+ inch, or very flat wrists. Love rectangular/oblong watches, favorite shape for cases, have a few, but don’t under estimate how large the flat rectangular back can sit.

Cartier Tank is quartz and double the price used. A Cartier mechanical is around 5k
@ForeverUnknowing4 күн бұрын
@turnipdreams Nothing wrong with quartz, and it'd be a high quality quartz, plus that extra money spent either way is on an established and known brand, which us b the point @KabobHope was trying to make.👍 I myself am hesitant to drop this kind of money on a micro, no matter the specs. I'd like to have the opinion of the experts, or at least more experienced and dressier watch collectors and lovers... In the video, I heard the statement "This is a dress watch." I do agree with the statement, but I'd like to know the opinion of people about how dressy this watch is. I mean, I do see it as a dressier watch, but I think it doesn't look as dressy as a Cartier Tank. But, is this still good enough to wear while wearing a suit?
