Holy cow it’s almost surreal to have a watch KZbinr who talks sense, is clearly objective in an investigative manner, is honest and genuine, and does not have some hidden ulterior agenda or motive. Kudos. So refreshing in a sea of chancers spouting utter tripe to get the next freebie.

Thanks for that. Very kind words. ❤️❤️ So far I've been accused of being paid by Rolex to hate on Omega. Being paid by Omega to hate on Rolex. Being in the pocket of CW. Being in the pocket of "chinese brands". Being too harsh on chinese brands. Being too swiss. Ignoring the germans. Hating too much on the swiss. And here I am just being paid by all of them - Rolex actually pulled out of F1 to pay for me, you know 😂😂

If it's Patek apparently everything is Thierry. In the rest, likely somebody in product management but watch brands tend to have massive involvement from the execs it feels like (Obviously they're involved in the decisions but it feels like many exert quite a lot of creative control - just like the aesthetic of the cybertruck is very much a product of Elon Musks brain) 😀

@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch I am baffled why some brands find it so difficult to do things right. Before the shake-up at Longines (who are doing great things in my opinion and are now more attractive than Tudor to me), it seemed to be their mission to make good designs, then ruin them with utterly stupid things like the infamous "Longines Long Lug Syndrome" and "put a date wherever you like as long as it looks awful" strategy. It shouldn't take more than a couple of people trawling watch fora to understand what people want.

One of the big problems for the industry is that most of the expensive watch brands have raised prices significantly during the Covid watch bubble (often it seemed the higher the better)...and now that the economy is weak and spending is tight, so many folks simply cannot afford these ever more expensive watches, so sales are falling.

It’s ok, being interested in watches isn’t really a hobby - an interest at best. Buying expensive jewellery isn’t really considered a hobby, and that’s ok! Don’t take it too seriously, buy what you enjoy and relax. Best way to enjoy watches is by enjoying what’s on your wrist and living life.
@SteveConkie-t6r4 күн бұрын
I agree that this particular hobby does tend to attract a lot of self-appointed Alpha Males/Experts who think that throwing a lot of money around validates their uninformed and often childish opinion/statements.. And don't get me started on the "watch dealer(s) in downtown New York for 30 years" who give you advice (always the same advice: Buy a Rolex or the latest hyped mega watch.....from my shop) A calm, reasonable viewpoint is always welcome. 👍 I would have preferred for this segment, rather than looking for short-termist "excitement", to have been a "State of The Collection" piece. What does a prospective buyer have to choose from when arriving at the boutique of X brand? I don't really think it matters if a watch is particularly new and it can be to a brand's detriment to have an overly large number of new watches for a customer to develop feelings/opinions towards. That being said, I did go specifically to Tag Heuer to see the new Solargraph and I liked it. It is not only good-looking it is an extremely sensible watch. Light, discreet, legible, with a movement you simply do not have to worry about. Want one watch for life? Done.

I think you're right about Christopher Ward in regards to their move to profitability with higher end models. You can see the attention those get from enthusiasts at events. Everyone flocks to the Bel Canto, the Twelve, etc. The more generic models don't get any of that attention. This is just an impression of course, but it aligns with that narrative quite well. Probably the most reasonable tier list I've seen and it's based in reality (objective subjectivity???). Pleasantly surprised you did it. I completely agree with placing Hermes in the S tier, it will be competing with Cartier if it isn't already as the jewelry watchmaker. I'm a fan of Laurent Ferrier as you well know so I agree with the A tier ranking. Omega is huge and Tudor may be overhyped but they are at least making a number of good watches and have had some nice releases.

I agree on your thoughs on longines. I somehow snobbed it but I regret everything that I had in mind in the last 90 days. The ultrachron is stunning and I tried it on an AD

I love my Omega's. Incredible value & availability with slight variations. There could be 5 people in the same room and all have Seamaster or Speedmaster with all a sight variations. I love that.

Totally agree on Hermès. Got into that brand due to the Birkin Bags of my wife. Will collect my H08 next week. Hell of a watch and far superior than the artificial Cartier hype.

Perhaps an interesting topic to discuss for a video (or the next Q&A): Spring Drive It being the "perfect marriage" between mechanical and quartz movements, one would think it would sort of mark a point where new innovations would pop up more in the industry, but it seems like it's been relegated to GS (and the LX line of Seiko) as much as the Astron technology has done the same Any idea where you feel that the future of that tech will go? And maybe adding your own thoughts on its impact

I love your takes and insight, I feel you missed the mention of chronoswiss. Their Delphis is absolutely stunning and uses color in a way that few watches can pull off. Would love to see a tier list of the decades. Watches are meant to be timeless, classic, and longstanding… it would be so much fun to see your take of brand releases through the timeline of the 1900’s :)

A very good, concise, review ! I have a Zenith Elite Chronograph blue dial that uses the El Primero movement. A stunning watch imho with a true heritage in watch making. I'm not impressed with the Defy styles, but want to get a Pilot. The CW brand offers some stunning styles but I always question the quality side of that brand. Omega is always a favorite!

As a doxa fan i think the smaller subs were a nice addition to the lineup. Although it would be nice to see them try their hand at dress watches they had some nice ones in the 40's and 50's before dive watches consumed the brand.
@tboneisgamingАй бұрын
I think that's a fair assessment. I'm saddened by Bremont's rebranding. To me the coolest watches in their lineup was the Martin Baker and the Kingsman ALT1. Longines is doing stellar work. I like the look of the conquest now.

Thx Mike. Even liked your Japanese casio pronunciation. Too positively biased to speak about JLC (would put them higher) but feel like I need to disagree with Omega. Like the brand but the FOIS doesn't feel well in my hands and the Seamaster 300s look outdated and need more of an upgrade than the releases this week..

Great video as always! Personally, I’d rate Rolex higher considering the context of the immense hype surrounding them in recent years. I believe a more understated year was necessary for their long-term strategy, and I think they absolutely nailed it. On another note, is there a specific reason Timex wasn’t mentioned? I understand not every brand can make it into the discussion, and some will inevitably be overlooked, but I wanted to check if this was an oversight given the impressive momentum Timex has had recently-especially in the context of the rise of Chinese "clomages"-or if there was a particular reason for their omission.

No other reasons than there are more watch brands than I have time for in a video. IT's a balance 😀😀

Great vid. Would love to hear your thoughts on Speake Marin- they seem to be quite niche, but their watches look great (to me)

Just curious - what are your views of Apple? Do you consider them a watch company or are they better classified as something else? They do sell a very high volume and they are something other than a simple fitness tracker. Anyway, just curious :)

I want an Omega white dialed Speedy like I haven’t wanted an Omega in years. I’m also a Portuguieser fan for uncertain reasons so I was glad to see IWC make some progress. I’d be interested in your perception of Dornbluth & Sohn.

For me, Baltic and Erebus are winners. Baltic has gone from obscure micro brand to having physical stores in places like Paris and London. As for Erebus? They knocked it out of the park with the Ascent.
@anorax001Ай бұрын
The Ascent is my watch of the year for 2024. It is the most balanced well made watch in my collection at this time. I hope it isn’t a one hit wonder for the brand.

Great post, thanks. Would appreciate your feedback on a watch I’m thinking of going for for a pending landmark birthday (on a normal persons purse). Aware it’s a Patek wink but the soon to be released jade dial Maen Manhattan 40. Do you think this is a good watch and investment?
@jmsd021Ай бұрын
Really love your content and echo many other commenters sentiments on your well-reasoned, objective and comprehensive approach (with a bit of dry humour). One small piece of feedback: If there is a watch you are focusing on (rather than mentioning in passing), it would be great if you used an image/animation of the watch a bit more in tandem with your commentary.

Good watches but in terms of what they've done this year I'd put them in B. Nothing changed their relative "status" in the watch world 😀
@nightstalker8244 күн бұрын
I agree with your Christopher Ward point of view. They are fine watches, but the more high end they get, it brings more satisfaction to buy a brand that isn’t associated with “affordable.” It’s like buying a Genesis car, well made care but a tough pill to swallow spending that much coin knowing it’s a Hyundai, and they were making throw away cars 10 years ago.
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatchКүн бұрын
It's a tough journey to go upmarket in that way. Ditching the "affordability" can be a costly choice 😀😀
