@@1wakuralain I'm sorry but I don't really understand your comment. I'm just presenting a way to get someone into books since just jumping in can seem kinda daunting you know. Its also an easy way to find where to start since you can often start by reading the source material for something higher up the line. This is especially true when it comes to series that aren't finished yet. No where did I say or imply that this was about not reading books etc, so I have no idea where you got the idea from. Unless you saying that Web and Light novels aren't books, in which case I firmly disagree.
@1wakuralain12 күн бұрын
@@meowmura349 I am being mean saying it that way, but the point I would push is that “daunting” isn’t a reason not to begin with books themselves. Sometimes courage is just making yourself do something uncomfortable. Reading comics and manga is the equivalent of candy. It is not developmentally as valuable as imagination based narratives. Light novels are childrens chapter books: good for young readers but lacking much of the literary elements and new idea structures present in non-light novels. If you are exiting high school, listing a light novel as impactful on you is like listing Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It’s not a bad book but it’s not challenging you in ways many other books will.

I definitely noticed a huge impact from covid to my learning ability. I still love reading, and back in middle school I used to read over 100 books a year since we didn't have TV, so it was either books or NPR. When I started college, I could easily sit down and knock out 3 hrs of homework, but then we had lockdown and online courses, and I went from a 3.8 GPA student in university to barely staying afloat. I would start trying to read a journal article or textbook and get hit with an intense wave of sleepiness, couldn't keep track of deadlines, and my motivation plummeted. I think I always had mild ADHD, but when I was younger it only showed in me being talkative and a little forgetful. Post-covid though, it got so bad I felt like I was a prisoner in my own mind, watching myself ruin my own life. Had to get medicated for it. Eventually I got my degree, but I had like a 2.7 GPA and had to take an extra year
@owencmyk12 күн бұрын
I've had this exact same issue with retaining information, but it's been like this my entire life even before Covid and before any of this. I can read just fine, and I love audio books, but reading has always been a big issue for me where I just cannot comprehend and retain written stories.

The craziest part about this for me, in a genuine none joking manner, is that I don’t even know why it’s the case and I’m kind of in the same boat. I LOVED to read my whole life, have a whole book shelf of novels that I’ve finished, and am in my fifth year of university. But I simply have not been able to get through any of my school readings for years. If anything genuinely longer than a poem or a short article is assigned I cannot and will not get through it. Idk what it is, because I still sit down and read for hours on my own time if I choose the book, even if it’s not as much as I’m used to. With School assignments I won’t be able to get through pretty much anything without literally zoning out or falling asleep. But there’s probably a chance I could sit through the Minecraft video.

What I did for practically every book was find another way to consume the story events through spark notes, or like a video summary. Then for essays I would just find quotes online and write essays using those quotes. I still learned alot about literary analysis and did well, but my physical reading skills are probably not much better than in highschool.

To be slightly fair when I was in school I very much enjoyed reading books but I never read very far into the books that were assigned cause they were either boring as all hell OR written several decades ago and not using present day grammar. This is coming from someone who read every Percy Jackson book up into th Roman series (which i think was like 10 books) The entire dresden files series (i think 12 books at the time) Half of the black prism series (it went to a place i don't enjoy thinking about so I stopped) All in the course of 4 years of high-school. Reading and video games were my jam yet every time the teachers wanted me to get into their old dusty ass books I was immediately checked out. The great Gatsby was just a story of rich assholes, 1984 was short and interesting in the first 33% but quickly fell off and ended like a wet fart, to kill a mocking bird was so damn slowly paced and had like small bright spots but then quickly fell off, and the one with the kids on the island (i can't remember which) was vague and again had worse pacing than one piece. So yea it's bad they aren't reading but it doesn't help the books they assigned were boring and poorly paced

I don't trust people above the age of like 20 who say Minecraft parkour is incredible. I know I'm not the target audience but it absolutely reeks of "im 14 and just learned about class, this is so deep"
