I am so glad someone finally made a video about ryan schimpf! I've been a padres fan for as long as I can remember and i remember vivdly his first major league hit that he smoked down the right field line. He was always one of my favorite players on the Padres and I never understood why we DFA'd him-Thanks for finally bringing him to light, Jolly. I follow him on instagram and Nowadays I think he's a realtor hopefully in san diego.

Love this video. I’m a huge Padres fan. I totally remember Schimpf. He was a homerun hitter for sure. Never realized how clutch he was with RISP though. I feel like today he would not have been cut as the stat experts would keep him somewhere. He was fun to watch. This was definitely in an era that no one cared about my team. Loved the last part as well. Thanks.

well you gotta understand I don’t remember all of the guys that have played in this team. This was 8 years ago. He played for us for parts of two seasons like Olive said. The Padres were more than irrelevant back then. People weren’t talking about him on sportscenter so even as a fan it’s not crazy to not remember a guy who played for 12 months 8 years back. But this guy all Padres fan remember. He was feast or famine and he had a funny last name. So many shrimp jokes. I’m not sure if you were mocking me with your reply. If you were how sad that you chose to

I like that the video stops to vouch for Cohen as not being a fair weather Padres fan by displaying his many Schimpf tweets - as if any of us who followed the Padres through 2015 and kept going to games were fair weather fans.

Fun Fact: Carlos Mendoza was the last manager for our local AA team(for the SF Giants at the time), the Shreveport Captains, before they moved to Texas and became the Rangers' AA farm team. I forget their name now but you can find them by looking up the Rangers AA team. I had no idea Mendoza was the last manager until a few months ago and they left quite a long time ago. Edited: they're the Frisco Roughriders now.

I have to think schimpf is just a bit of an anomaly. Larger than normal sample size but we have seen guys have a good year or two and flame out before. Charles Thomas might be comparable in that regard. He was decent and got traded for tim hudson but he just could not make the adjustments when the league got the book on him. I feel like if schimpf was not a statistical oddity he would have hung around a few more years as a pinch hitter. At least until the nl adopted the dh in '22.
