Those colors are used widely with Islam, but unfortunately, the contrast between the red and dark green isn't the best. Perhaps some white or gold lines to separate them, as well as making the moon and star in the middle slightly smaller would fix it.

Thanks for this mention of the Mauritanian flag. You were very close in the pronunciation of the name of the president. The spot where you missed the mark a little bit is totally understandable because it's very unusual. The ethnic group of the president is the Moors (Maurs). They are people of Arab-Berber heritage who speak Hassaniya, a language derived from Arabic. In this ethnic group, the small word "ould" (pronounced very much like "wilt") means "son of." Hence, we can see from the president's name that he is Mohamed, son of Abdel Aziz. The equivalent for women is "mint," which means "daughter of." Thus, if Mohamed had a sister named Bintu, she would be known as Bintu mint Abdel Aziz.

Hey! I heard about your channel only recently, but I watched this video and saw that you talk about local flag stuff in the US. I wanted to let you know I’m working with a close friend of mine and we’ve actually gotten all the way to our City Council (our city is Euclid, Ohio. Near Cleveland, Ohio) and we have their approval (through committee, we still have to write up some legislation) to make a new city flag for our city. We’re pretty close to actually finalizing this and we’re trying to get our name out into the vexillologist community! If you’re interested I can get you the nitty gritty detail. Thanks!

Britain let all the princely states to decide for themselves, not just Kashmir. For example, Bhopal, Travancore and Hyderabad were briefly independent. Most princes were being convinced or pressured into joining either India or Pakistan. Hyderabad and Kashmir were being invaded.

The flag debate in india reflects the fundamental fissure in the formation of the indian nation. For good or ill indian independence found itself thwarted by other communities that did not wish to subsumed into a unitary indian nation. Places like the princely states, other overseas terriotories on the indian sub continent all had flags as symbols of soverneign entities: when this was taken up by the muslim league it was perceived as a strike at the heart of an all india nation. There are still some communities in india that would like to change the present status quo. Kashmir was never absorded totally into india and the seperate flags indicate the disputed status and ongoing conflict in that part of the sub continent. The hindu ruler of the majority muslim kashmir had to choose which entity to align with in 1947. It appears that muslims were to make the decision by force of arms, this precipited a major feat of arms of the indian armed forces to secure kashmir for the delhi based government. Yet it has left kashhir as the odd one out in the subcontinent as having a flag which highlights the disputed status that would not apply to any other part of india. So i suspect from an indian perspective the various state and provincial flags of spain and even canada reflect a flawed nation imposed by past imperial contrivance rather than true nation states like india. This will be illustrated by the need for these places to redesign their flags to reflect their fluctuating nature. For india to allow this occur today would endorse the break up of the indian subcontinent that occurred in 1947.
@SantomPh6 жыл бұрын
Wayne Corker despite being a nation for over 70 years as of 2018, India is a very shaky federation that honestly should have never come together at all in 1948. The British never healed the divisions between ethnic and religious groups by uniting India, and post independence rulers hated any attempt at state identity as everything was on tenterhooks from the get go. the Sikhs have a religious flag (misappropriated by separatists), the West Bengal state often flew the hammer and sickle (oldest continously elected Communist government in the world), plus major party flags like Congress and the BJP are woven and revered like national flags. Popular Indian religious figures also had their own banners, like the departed Sai Baba. Sikkim, a former kingdom often flies a unique flag on certain occasions in the Buddhist calendar. the federal government is therefore extremely careful not to allow any state apart from Kashmir (politics) to wave their own flag as it is a warning that secession may happen.

Some political parties and critics believe that separate state flags are an insult to India’s unity. HOWEVER maybe the estate flags could also represent unity if the flags are re-designed with the Indian national flag in a canton or with the Indian tricolur ribbon kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKStZHeLpr6CZpY Of course this is my perspective as a non-Indian.

You got the map of Morocco wrong. I feel like you, as an indigenous guy yourself, should know better or at least should have researched better on the issue of indigenous rights. Not impressed.
@Vexillographer5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Kenneth. If you're referring to the map at 0:25 not including Western Sahara, that's because that territory is currently controlled by Morocco. I'm not saying that Morocco rightfully owns that land (it doesn't); I'm just trying to reflect the reality of the situation. I don't separate Tibet and China on maps, either. Although I want to see Tibet free and independent, the reality is that it's currently under Chinese control. My maps try to depict the world as it is, not as I'd like it to be.
@kenster82705 жыл бұрын
Tibet is universally recognized by the entire international community (i.e. all countries and many international organizations) as being part of China. Conversely, Western Sahara is universally recognized by the entire international community (i.e. all countries and many international organizations) as NOT being part of Morocco. Morocco controls 75-80% of Western Sahara. The remaining 20-25% is an area the size of the Navajo Nation.
