I have been musing upon this song for the past week. I (like many others I suspect) thought it was written and performed by This Mortal Coil. Imagine my delight as the fog lifted and I saw and heard(!) Tim Buckley's performance of his song on tele back in 1968. I have since come to the conclusion that Liz Frazer is the siren sung of, singing her belated, but never too late, side of the story. Tim's side is beautifully human: doubtful, joyous, singular, in thrall. In a nutshell, I can't split them - his sublime anguish, her lonely response.

Long afloat on shipless oceans I did all my best to smile 'til your singing eyes and fingers Drew me loving to your isle And you sang: "Sail to me Sail to me Let me enfold you" Here I am Here I am Waiting to hold you Did I dream you dreamed about me? Now my foolish boat is leaning Broken lovelorn on your rocks For you sing: 'Touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow O my heart, o my heart, shies from the sorrow' I am puzzled as the oyster I am troubled as the tide: Should I stand amid your breakers? Should I lie with death my bride? Hear me sing, 'Swim to me, swim to me, let me enfold you: Here I am, here I am, waiting to hold you'
@Penguin_of_Death4 жыл бұрын
@Robert Curd Your lyrics are incorrect...they are from the original Tim Buckley version, but there are some subtle changes in This Mortal Coil's version: Long afloat on shipless oceans I did all my best to smile 'til your singing eyes and fingers Drew me loving to your isle And you sang: "Sail to me Sail to me Let me enfold you" Here I am Here I am Waiting to hold you Did I dream you dreamed about me? Were you HERE when I was *FLOTSAM? (see below) Now my foolish boat is leaning Broken lovelorn on your rocks For you sing: 'Touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow O my heart, o my heart, shies from the sorrow' WELL I am puzzled as the NEWBORN CHILD I am RIDDLED as the tide: Should I stand amid THE breakers? OR should I lie with death my bride? Hear me sing, 'Swim to me, swim to me, let me enfold you: Here I am, here I am, waiting to hold you' *This sounds more like 'flotsam' to me (and to many others, as I have discovered), however there are numerous interpretations online, and from what I've read it seems that even TMC were unclear on Buckley's lyric here, and Liz Fraser sang an alternative word. I have seen versions with 'forced out' and 'full sail', but there is also the possibility that it could be 'fo'c'sle' - the shortened version of 'forecastle' (the upper deck of a sailing ship forward of the foremast, or the forward part of a ship with the sailors' living quarters). With the nautical theme of the song it would seem that a nautical word or phrase would be most fitting, so flotsam, full sail of fo'c'sle are all in the frame. It would be interesting to see if the lyrics were included on TMC's 'It'll End In Tears' album. Ultimately, for me, the actual word used is less important, my enjoyment of this beautifully haunting version comes from the arrangement and the way Liz Fraser sings it...I could listen to it again and again. One of those rare pieces that can transport you to another place...another time. I'm sure that she could sing her weekly shopping list like this and it would still move me...

I can't help but always imagine that Elizabeth would be singing this song to Jeff Buckley; somehow a redemption, an apology from his father, Tim Buckley, being delivered by the compassionate kindness of the beloved Elizabeth. Just feels like it's a song of Buckleys' constant sorrow being inherited to this poor girl.
@Purplealegria77 ай бұрын
My God…..You know they…meaning Jeff and Liz dated right? Look up all flowers in time bend towards the sun, a duet with Jeff and Elizabeth…it’s incredible. Such a heartfelt gorgeous love song. From what I have read….Like most young relationships, It didn't last and he left her heartbroken. But he was still thinking of her (by singing the lyrics to their duet, and mentioning his nickname for her… “sweet willow” during songs in his live show) so I guess he was regretting how things ended With them. In 1997 after they had already broken up, she was in the studio writing and laying down the vocals for her song teardrop with massive attack…on that day she received word that he was missing and presumed dead. I think that is why that song is so damn haunting. She said she poured out her pain and regrets in that song. In the most painful and tragic way, It all came full circle for them. You REALLY nailed that, like more than you know. Wow! The chain of sorrow between all 3 of them but particularly between Jeff and Elizabeth is forever linked, and unusually strong. Like the predestined karma/kismet/soul tie level is crazy here! They were absolutely meant. So sad. 😞

One of those songs that makes the whole world stop to just listen. The magic of this song is the restraint and spaces in between the voice and guitar.

Pretty sure this is from a TV show called "Loose Talk" from the autumn of 1983. I had not heard this song before and was truly mesmerized by this performance. It heralded a love affair with the Cocteau Twins which endures to this day. No words.

I was previously pretty sure it was a BBC2 show, but those lines appearing at the top right corner towards the end indicate it was a commercial station, as they were used for syncing commercial breaks, so you may well be right.

I've done some research. Tuesday 11 October. 1983. "Loose Talk" on Channel Four. My best friend - we did not know each other at the time - was watching too. Cheers.

My pleasure. Thanks to you for sharing. I never ever thought that I would be able to track this down. It was, without getting overly-sentimental, a seminal moment in my life.

The first time I ever heard this, I was utterly entranced within the emotion this provoked from within deep inside of me, unparalleled by anything else I had ever heard. Truly a moving piece of music.

Incredible. Seeing it live really hits home the simplicity, the near-perfection, and the beauty of Buckley's composition.

the vocals are so smooth, literal melting butter, here is the absolute poetry being sung: Long afloat on ship-less oceans I did all my best to smile 'Til your singing eyes and fingers Drew me loving to your isle And you sang Sail to me, sail to me Let me enfold you Here I am, here I am Waiting to hold you Did I dream, you dreamed about me? Were you here when I was full sail? Now my foolish boat is leaning Broken lovelorn on your rocks For you sing Touch me not, touch me not Come back tomorrow Oh, my heart Oh, my heart shies from the sorrow Well I'm as puzzled as the newborn child I'm as riddled as the tide Should I stand amid the breakers? Or should I lie with death my bride? Hear me sing Swim to me, swim to me Let me enfold you Here I am, here I am Waiting to hold you

The sirens call for mercy. A soul penetrated by the divine, asking for the grace needed to live. Pulling up something deeper and more penetrating than one can take. Walking through the plain of sorrow. That’s what I get from this song. A siren asking for mercy, hoping her soul will transcend. So beautiful.

Many nights thinking things out under the silhouette of my giant oak creeping over me against the moonlight, solar lights up my Roman columns, apple crown royal, incense, this song and the cold chill=perfection
