I personally think the whole point is it not being something new about revenge, but rather an authentic retelling of the original norse story.
@sonickiller360

I think you all fundamentally misunderstand this film. This is a Norse story meant to be viewed from a Norse perspective, in viewing it from a more traditional perspective you thus fail to grasp the reasoning behind crucial points of the film. For example, the ending from a more traditional lens seems tragic, where as from a Norse perspective it is heroic and righteous because Amleth ensured the safety of his bloodline, avenged his father, fulfilled his destiny, and died in battle so that he could go to Valhalla. Essentially, your lack of understanding of the culture of the people in the film and the time that they lived in has led to your fundamental misunderstanding of the actions of the characters in this film.

@@maxsilbert I was being blunt and matter of fact. They fundamentally misunderstood this film by incorrectly viewing it through a modern, more traditional lens, when a Norse perspective was required. If anything I was reserved, I could have been far more acerbic and scathing, such was the gravity of their error.

@@endor8witch well, Hamlet was based on the Norse legend of Amleth. Shakespeare did that a lot, taking old legends or stories and refashioning them. All his contemporaries probably did. Anyways, I always felt like a theme of this film is the cruelty of the gods in an era where Christianity is slowly eroding the old Viking ways. Amleth is obviously a simpleton and the gods use him at every turn just for the fun of it. That ending always gets me

There was no spirit, no fight with the mountain dweller. It was him confronting his own fear based off a legend and telling it to f*ck off once he realized there was nothing there. That was the inspiration for making the guards fight their own fear with the nightmare shroom

1. The Hel fight sequence reminded me of the Scar vs. Simba fight in The Lion King. 2. Skwisgaar dying at the end wasn't sad, it's actually the happiest ending for a Norse, to die in battle. It's the only way to enter Valhalla. 3. The fight sequence to obtain the Draugr Sword was very reminiscent of Kratos fighting Travellers in God of War (2018).

Why does every single movie have to be “saying something” about the topic it’s portraying? Like why does it have to “add to” some cultural discussion? Obviously art is inherently political, but I don’t really understand how not “adding to the conversation” is an axiomatic negative. Does every revenge story have a flashing sign saying “revenge is bad” at some point? Aren’t we supposed to have moved beyond the Hays Code by now?
@nikolozkipshidze
@nikolozkipshidze 2 жыл бұрын
They don't "have to", but without doing something new, novel, or saying something interesting about whatever it is you're covering, you're going to be at an inherent disadvantage, not because it's bad to rehash old stories without changing anything, but because it's boring. A movie that does not wish to take a stand, that doesn't want to add to the conversation is fine, but it's just not going to be great. A 6 and not a 9.
@spendsshanks6050
@spendsshanks6050 2 жыл бұрын
@@nikolozkipshidze That’s retarded. Genuinely. The craft of the movie in its objective quality (cinematography, writing, characters) can make a movie a 9 even if it’s been done before and doesn’t “add” anything. It doesn’t need to push a message for it to be a great movie

RILEY - Forgive me for being too lazy to rewatch the your last video and cite a specific time stamp. I believe my comment was inspired by a lack of confidence that I sometimes perceive you to have about your _own_ thoughts and theories. I'm simply emphasizing the value of your opinions, and encouraging diversity of thought. What my comment means to the context of the show is the same as it means to any other body of work. wait can you explain this more I have no idea what you're talking about
@SparkFromWithin
@SparkFromWithin 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheyreJustMovies When the panel was reviewing points from The Severance episode, Riley was arguing something like "If communism/socialism is the DNA...", that point was rather poorly argued and then said "They [Lumem] have a board and who is to say that board isn't, like, elected by every member of this theoretical thing/structure they are proposing" (around 1:15:30) my rebuttal of that argument is how can people who are not aware of all of their dimensions really chose? If you don't know that you have a life outside work and they ask you to work more, you wouldn't know what you are giving up to work more because you are not fully aware of the multiple implications of that decision. Even when you are only being "a part of you" in this, our, reality, that exists in the context of all you are, and all you are informs your choices and behaviour. I sustain that if a part of you can be isolated to the extent this series suggests, you cannot really choose, and since you cannot really chose whatever structure they have is at least authoritarian and of very questionable legitimacy.
@TheyreJustMovies
@TheyreJustMovies 2 жыл бұрын
@@SparkFromWithin Aaaaah ok. Sorry, I had to rewatch that part of this episode, haha. The point I was trying to make about the DNA was in response to the comment alleging that authoritarianism is incompatible with communism. That's true, theoretically - but practically, every time communism is attempted, it ends up being authoritarian. In my DNA analogy I ask you to consider a string of DNA written to express phenotype A. But the organism instead expresses phenotype B. That's all. So to say communism ≠ authoritarianism is kind of disingenuous. So in regards to Lumon, I agree that the company represents the excesses of capitalism, not communism - which is why in the Severance episode I was asking if we thought that the show had a socialist / communist message. I think we agreed that it did not - but then I imagined a scenario in which the show's creator's WERE communist, and said that wouldn't make sense anyway, since communism ends up creating the same kind of top-down, authoritarian bureaucracy that we see in Lumon. Communist regimes usually have various "boards" or bodies of "elected" representatives, but of course they're not REALLY elected, so I was drawing a parallel between THAT and Lumon. This format can make it hard to spell out our positions clearly :/

Just speaking for myself here, I didn't really have any problem with Joe Rogan pre-pandemic. He was a pretty good interviewer, did a good job of teasing out his guest's thoughts. But now he's a meme because he waded into discussions of science without having any idea what he's talking about the majority of the time. The thing that made his show good - giving space to a guest to speak their mind - contributed to one of the great societal problems of this era: misinformation. I don't think he's necessarily a "toxic male" or whatever, I just think the misinformation that he propagated made the political polarization / science education issue worse -Riley
