just something to note about your discussion of jumpscares i've always firmly held that jumpscares are only good when they're used as a payoff of tension; they have to be *earned* for them to work properly a good jumpscare leaves the viewer feeling still afraid, but also relieved of tension, needing a few moments to recover a bad jumpscare leaves the viewer feeling annoyed, and likely less interested in continuing

So Germany used to have a legal loophole that meant you could fund a flopped movie as a tax writeoff and somehow come out with a profit, so a few studios in Germany made intentionally terrible movies until the laws were changed to prevent this. I’d wager that’s how *American Poltergeist* got so many sequels
@eightcoins44012 ай бұрын

I honestly have to agree with the whole jumpscare thing, you can have a 'scary' or 'unnerving' movie without going for jumpscares and it will be a much more enjoyable movie a great example (and movie in general) is 28 Days Later there isn't any 'traditional' jumpscares but the long silent panning shots of just walking or driving is so unnerving, at least in my humble opinion.
@eightcoins44012 ай бұрын
The problem is especially if you watch alot of horror, you just become jaded to jumpscares. its the cheapest way to scare someone .Its just startling because theres a loud noise. In general, horror films tend to only really be jumpscary heavy when its lazy low effort schlock aimed at people who dont even watch horror films (i.e the Nun - godawful movie, yet a box office sucess).

Jumpscares are, in my opinion, lazy, trite, and ineffective in the horror genre. As soon as the initial and brief startle disappears, one is just left irritated. Slow-burn tactics, like the uncanny, those make for good horror fodder, because it isn’t in one’s face and obnoxious, but rather playing on one’s instinctive fear of the unknown. It’s the constant uncertainty fed by just enough perception to maintain awareness of it, that really gets in one’s mind when watching a horror film. But that is just a theory. A *gay* (and trans for that matter) theory.

I don't know if you will ever read this Mel, but those FSK 18 Movie boxsets are not popular here in Germany. They're the movie equivalent of shovelware videogames. Often the movies in them didnt even get an 18 rating or got cut - so they slap a trailer that got rated 18+ to get the age rating on the box. Some labels that churn out these boxsets such as Great Movies (ironic name, isnt it) are pretty much memes in the horror communities here. Im pretty sure the only thing making those movies potentially sell in Germany - if at all - is people confusing them for the 80s movie Poltergeist. Naming it "american poltergeist" seems somewhat seo, since with it being a loanword in english, I imagine alot of people type "american poltergeist" into German Amazon to get the 80s movie.
