My current mower does not have a self propelled system, though I had one such mower that did. That was a Pace forward. The mower had only 2 wheels. The self propelled system drove a roller at the rear. This thing was a marvel of mower technology, because the cutting system threw the cuttings into a catcher at the rear, by throwing it over the drive roller guard, & into the catcher. The cutting blade disc was plain jane, but the blades were a true work of art, operating much like a vacuum cleaner. It made the grass stand up, then cut it, and ejected it into the catcher. These mowers have been obsolete for about 45 years now. They had a Briggs & Stratton engine somewhere in the 5-8hp range.

Self propel is a must for me because of hills & slopes. My 1983 Snapper mower has a 4hp 2 cycle Wisconsin Robyn. The parts are high for it. I paid 40.00 bucks just for the needle valve in the carb & that was a few years ago, I believe they told me they don't make parts for that engine any more but I'm done buying parts for it I have two newer Snappers I like better. Two cycle ones are more aggravating to start like yours.

All mine are self propelled but we're in the hills and there are no flat spots to mow. I also saw a grease fitting on the top of the tranny pulley. A shot or 2 of grease will take care of the top tranny input shaft wearing out early. Good fix and Blessings.

I just started a landscaping company about two months ago, and the self propel feature decided to go after encountering some debris in s very over grown yard. While I need my mower due to an explosion of customers, I don't have time to fix it tonight and be up and running by tomorrow. Although finding your channel is a blessing in and of itself because the long minnesota winters give me time to do repairs on my summer equipment so thank you for sharing your knowledge. Here's my question l, if you were to have to buy a mower which one would you buy, considering 1. Durability, 2. Ease of locating replacement parts, 3. Ease of repair? That are budget friendly in a Joe Biden Economy?
@HomeGaragechannel Жыл бұрын
thanks. I would have said anything honda but unfortunately, longevity and parts might be questionable in a hand full of years. I would go with Toro's line of mowers, price features, and ease of parts are all there.
@jasonleger4712 Жыл бұрын
Thanks I did in fact go with a Toro, I found a gentleman who also repairs mowers etc, so I saved a couple hundred bucks. Do you have any recommendations on where to locate standups or zero turns on a budget? And while I like Husqvarna, I can't justify purchasing their equipment when they are laying off so many employees.

It doesn't matter to me as my 3 horsepower Briggs and Stratton powered lawnmower is small & light which means it's very handy to mow on an awkward block which is a bit terraced. In the future when I move,a self propelled lawnmower would be handy for mowing on a steep slope as it would save me from have to push the mower uphill with all my effort !
@HomeGaragechannel3 жыл бұрын
that makes a lot of sense. Thank you Russell Booth.

After 50 years of pushing mowers manually, I spoiled myself with the hydrostatic Honda. No going back now. The thing seems to be almost thought-controlled. The transmissions are reputed to last about a generation, and are very expensive ($230 for mine). So what? If it needs it some day, it gets it. It makes the difference between me getting some much-needed exercise, and paying to have the mowing done -- so at $800 new, it was a very cost-effective purchase. Self-propelled units can keep aging geezers off the couch, and I can maintain my property the way I want it done. Win-win.

I have watched many on how they treat their push and Lawn/Garden tractors and no wonder they have problems...#1 brand new they start the mower at full throttle and just take off you never do that you let the engine idol for a few minutes to warm up and make sure its lubricated #2 never start beating you're Lawn/Garden transmission until at least 30 hours working time to allow the transmission to break in and make the first transmission fluid change at 50 hours and #3 always maintenance you're mower at least once a year with tune ups
