I would say that she's the real life version of a game called Shining Nikki. They sell 200 gems (which is almost completely worthless in the game) for 750 DOLLARS, and then put it on sale for 25 dollars. It's basically an illegal marketing technique where you sell something for a crazy-high prize then put a crazy discount, but in reality it's still extremely expensive. The discount usually never ends, and it's just there to give a "cheap" illusion when in reality it's still expensive. I think this is similar.
