2:02 When my grandpa first went to visit my grandma's parents, as part of the usual "I'm dating your daughter so I reckon we should know each other" tradition, my great grandma made pancakes. Back in that time, my great grandparents weren't super well off, so a dinner of pancakes with a single egg and slice of bacon per person was a rather fancy feast for the occasion. My grandpa, gentleman that he is, ate every bite, and when asked about the food he replied "I can tell that you're a good cook, ma'am." From then on, whenever my great grandma knew he was coming over, she'd make up big stacks of pancakes. My grandpa hated pancakes. He still hates pancakes. Oatmeal and rice porridge are his preferred meals if having a sweet breakfast, but he soldiered on and ate every bite put in front of him, because that's just what he considered to be the right thing to do. It was nearly three years before my grandma found out about his dislike for pancakes, and she quickly told her mother. His silent dedication is one of the reasons my grandma agreed to marry him young, and they spent 80 years of their lives together.

Honestly, I just went to my own class reunion, and I can confidently say that if any of the people that used to harass me tried to get me to give them a good word for a job, I’d probably do the opposite. They weren’t the time I spent being hurt by them back in school, and they aren’t worth spending time on now trying to help make things work in their favor, even as a “kill them with kindness” kind of person

The "moderator" needs to be asked if he'd : cook, clean, make spreadsheets etc. for anyone else for free... If the answer is "no" and he doesn't get the reasoning, give him 6 weeks to find a job doing the same... moderating/cooking/cleaning/making spreadsheets etc. WHILE also doing 1/2 the household chores... After that, I'd be doing only my own cooking, cleaning, laundry etc. Until he gets the idea AND a job, or moves out.

I think the whole gamer girl harassment tends to be more an issue with game genre. Whenever I've heard stories of this kind of thing it was almost always an FPS game. Spawntaneous has a running series of videos that document her experiences on this called "OMG a Girl!". some of it's pretty mild, but sometimes it gets pretty unhinged. I think it might just have to do with the type of people FPS games attract. It's just generally the worst type of people most of the time. it sucks, because some of them are a lot of fun, like R6:Siege, but the people I get matched with almost always ruin the experience. I've played probably 60 games of R6 Siege at most, and I can count on one hand the amount of chill lobbies I've been in.

I hate playing online with randos in general because of how many complete A-holes there are. There are genuinely fun games that I just can't play anymore without a premade group because of the communities, most notably League of Legends. But yeah, if people think you're a girl on the internet you're also probably going to get lots of creepy and/or sexist unsolicited messages (speaking from experience).

I find it a bit strange that this "bias" is still going on. At least 40 - 50% of any online MMORPG (for example) that I've played, were girls/women. If there was a group of about 8, at least half of them were female. Myself included. Thing is, I've worked in bars and hospitality, so snide and sexualized comments don't bother me. I either ignore or give them some curry back, and they'll pipe down; unless they're really objectionable, I continue to treat them as fellow game players and people and they come to accept me; if not, I move on. "People behind the pixels".

@@aikologic yep, sadly the games I play none of my friends play the same games, so i'm kinda stuck with the a-holes if I want to play games like R6 or Overwatch. I end up muting them most of the time. Which sucks considering Siege is a game that winning is highly dependent on comms, but if all they're gonna do is scream in your ear, why bother? Needless to say I don't play often, therefore can't get good at the game if I even wanted to. It's both funny and mildly infuriating when they scream about how much you suck over voice. i'm just like "bruh, we're literally playing in newcomer/casual right now, we all suck, calm down". 🤣 I do remember though an instance where I was playing Neverwinter, an MMO loosely based off of the old cRPG Neverwinter Nights(which I loved) by Bioware, though vaguely, of a dude being creepy. I was fresh out of spawn, on my way to do either my first or second proper quest ever, and this guy is just following me around. I think he sent a message or three, but I don't remember what(this was forever ago, I think it was a few year after it came out). I just remember I was playing a female character, and he clearly thought I was a girl. Rather than confirm or deny, I just wanted out of that situation, so I blocked him and logged out for a bit. then the game stopped launching, and I uninstalled it. So yeah, I turn all chat off in games now.

Yeah gaming online is just extremely weird, men are apparently a “simp” for showing basic decency, dudes act like they’ve never seen a woman before, or they ask some of the most insane questions, or extremely sexual comments. I wasn't since I don't have a mic and am also incrediby insecure, especially with my voice. But then another random joins the game, and he said Hello over voice chat. Then the 2 girls started treating him... weird Like, kinda mocking him. Like when one of them revived him, she said "don't worry, this little girl can carry a big strong man". And at the end when it showed the scores, they started making fun of him, saying things like "I thought guys were good at games?" It was a really weird experience. And he stopped talking after a little bit of them doing that, I assume he muted them Only time I've ever seen that happen (seen the reverse plenty though, unfortunately)

Girl gamer on the internet: It's weird - back before BC in WoW I was a teen girl playing on Wow. I NEVER had the issue of "OMG YOU'RE A GIRL!?!?!!?!?!?!" and all the problems. I sounded like a girl, I mentioned I was a girl. No issues. [using WoW as an example as this is personal experience] A few years later - playing WoW I got treated like crap. Small error? "WELL WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM A GIRL!? GIRL'S DON'T GAME. "I'm a higher level than you ... I know what I'm doing. I just hit the wrong key. Meanwhile those same dudes would get the entire raid wiped and that's fine, oopsie poopsie. I don't know when it changed over but I found it's less likely on games that have /less/ users. OR when they see you game long term before ever hearing you speak. Some games, I imagine suck either way because fanbase ... but it was so bizarre to go from being treated like one of the bros, one of the nerds - to being treated like a stupid dumb girl who didn't know anything. OR WORSE to be treated like I was there looking for a boyfriend ... or ... to be an object. But I won't go into that stuff. Thank god my voice sounds more androg these days because I just tell people "I'm a dude. Yes I hear that all the time that I sound like a girl, give it two weeks and it'll register as a male voice in your head. No I don't know why it works like that." yay for transitioning I guess lol

I have found people are usually inclined to like what they are used to. So it’s quite likely that the wealthy family the chef works for has either Middle to work in glass roots, or even a middle to working class passed and then they really took off after the Dad got some kind of lucrative degree or started a profitable business. So if they were used to regular American food with regular American ingredients from childhoods being brought up on such things, then that would be their taste expectations. My honest guest is yes they did go out to the restaurants in Europe and Asia and eat the authentic stuff but keep in mind truly top end high cuisine is pretty uncommon unless you go to specialist spots. So they probably got used to good sonewhat upmarket, but not true haute cuisine restaurant food in the countries. And stuff like that is made using common not particularly expensive ingredients. You can get at grocery stores, mostly apart, primarily from certain things like the steaks and wines as well as some spices. It’s basically skillful common cooking. So they thought they got the fancy stuff, and when he tried to make the true fancy stuff, they weren’t actually accustomed to it and that was why they didn’t like it. So he made the more pedestrian stuff they got in actuality, and that was exactly what their tastes were configured for.

He didn't say the right thing, but I don't think I would have been able to think about that sort of thing on the spot either. Honestly as a woman who plays online games i feel like guys are super chill for the most part. Maybe if you're finding that playing online is exhausting you might not be that fun to play with, regardless of your sex.

I don’t think it’s necessarily a reflection of the person who is experiencing it, but perhaps the community of the game they’re playing. I’ve received pretty rude and lewd comments while gaming before, while other games I’ve had a much more chill time. I’ve become friends with the ones I’ve met through the latter and it’s become a point where we’ll often team up and play other games together. But that took a lot of time of weeding out the cruddy people.

@@Silentgrace11 I agree. It's similar to a work environment; some have great cultures, and others don't. I am amused that many (both genders) seem to think some online games are like dating sites. But then again, one of my male fellow players (divorced, in his late 30's) met "the love of his life" and actually moved countries to marry her. So it may also be more common in certain age groups.

It’s heavily the game and to a certain extent the age groups. There is a reason there are memes about the olden days of call of duty and halo lobbies. I’ve done a lot less on my gaming since then but overall I say in general, the age of “Tits or GTFO” as it definitely was in the first half of the 2000s has ended long ago. Also, younger guys think the middle school and high school age groups tend to have much worse behavior than older men although there’s no shortage of older men who are thirsty jackasses who think boundaries are the things that used determine how much to pay the lawn guy. As a man speaking, I found the best way to have harassment, free gaming experiences to join in as part of a larger community such as a discord chat.

Regarding the "women playing games story": What do they expect? 1) Everyone gets flamed 2) If they don't like, they can either stop playing or play less toxic games. 3) The world Is anti-men as is, the last thing men want is to have their "safe spaces" invaded, gaming being one of them.
