I've never seen a shark vertebrae before! Neat! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for watching, Ragnar Rocks! Yes, shark vertebrae are incredibly fun to find - those perfect discs stick out like a sore thumb on a beach full of shells and angular rocks!

Awesome find, Ashby! Any ideas as to the age it might be?
@CharlestonFossilAdventures2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chuck!! Are you asking about the age of the shark, or the vertebra?

@@CharlestonFossilAdventures What might be the potential geologic age of this specimen? There is something about the texture that seems older. Also, what geologic formation is the area in which it was found?
@CharlestonFossilAdventures2 жыл бұрын
@@C6TTiX I appreciate the thought, but this one is indeed modern. Now that it’s dried completely, it weighs 0.3 oz, whereas a comparable fossilized one (sans matrix) is 1.0 oz on the dot! It’s probably a subfossil - between modern and fully mineralized, but it would not surprise me in the slightest if it is only a few years/months old. In fact, the cartilage is so soft that a shell broke off in the wall of the centrum, presumably from the dredging activity that brought the sand up to this shoreline.

@@CharlestonFossilAdventures Great information! Thank you!

@@C6TTiX You’re welcome!! Had this one been found inland, the weight/mineralization factor wouldn’t be as indicative as it is along the ocean.

And just because a find is black doesn't mean it's fossilized!
