Although Tom’s swing techniques are taught by most good golf pros, his genius lies in his ability to make these techniques understandable and relatable to average golfers. He also makes “the lessons” fun and entertaining. Thank you Tom for another great video!

On 4/16 I tried this practice routine for 3 minutes or so and played 18 holes the next day. Prior to 4/16 the bottom point of my swing was not consistent. I was hitting mostly fat, thin and the occasional good shot. I made one additional change before playing on 4/17. I could not figure out how to quit shifting weight to my trail side. I discovered that, for me, if on my backswing my lead knee moved out toward my lead foot toes, I did not shift my weight. Keeping my elbows close together without breakdown was not easy, but when I did the combination of lead knee out to toes, lead shoulder under chin and lead arm straight on backswing was the ticket. I actually enjoyed my golf round with two looks at eagle, one converted, and a couple of birdies for an 80. Have some work to do to figure out to quit breaking down in my backswing (swinging too far back), but this is finally coming together. Thank you, Tom.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 24 күн бұрын
Awesome job figuring that out, and congrats on a great round!! 💪💪 Yes - what you mentioned with regard to the knee action is indeed part of what I teach. The lead knee flexes as the trail knee straightens during the backswing, both in their outwardly flared orientations that we preset at address. The flexing/straightening occurs gradually and in response to the increasing forward weight load and the centered tilting, turning, and extending components of the motion. They are not contrived actions unto themselves. We're simply allowing them to be reactive, thereby freeing up the hips and shoulders to execute an unrestricted turn. By the way, if you'd really like to get on the fast track towards properly learning this swing system in a comprehensive, sequential platform, please consider my online school. It will make for a far more efficient, superior, and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through these channel videos that jump around randomly from topic to topic. The school is where you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish, along with diagnostic and corrective tools for resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues, and much more. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. At just $14.99/month or $149.99 per year the value in terms of what you get for that price point is beyond comprehension, and based on proven results it represents by far the best golf instruction deal on the planet. ‘The Shoulders’ - this part of the tutorial is an absolute gem; for me at least. It’s that ‘Ah Ha’ moment when other things fall into place. Tried focussing on turning my lead shoulder to point towards the ball on the back swing, then the other shoulder through impact. Immediate results! Crisp, powerful and straight shots! Finished 2nd in club competition as a result (I would have won if it wasn’t for my own stupidity and losing 4 shots on one hole 😩)

Tom, i wanted to let you and everyone know how much help you've been. I was a member at one time to your website and watch almost all your videos here. Last spring and early summer, i was using you swing instructions and shooting in 70's. For some reason, last few rounds of last year and 1st round this year, I reverted back to old swing and shooting in the 80's plus. I decided today to get stacked and weight on the front leg and hit beautifully, crispy shots. 11/14 fairways and 15/18 greens for a 76. I struggled with putter on front 9, 3 putting on 5 holes. I did make 3 birdies. If putting would have been there on front 9, I could have possibly broken par for the 1st time ever. Again, thank you for all you do!

Hi Tom I’m now signed up to your course and all going well. Every step has made improvements. Last night was working on the tucked right elbow and the straightening of the right arm just after impact. I’ve realised this is massively important. Even managed to hit driver, my nemesis) I was striking it very solid but ran out of time. Looking forward to next session. Also it straightened out the ball flight! Weather bad ATM but can still practice it without hitting balls. It’s like you know what my swing needs next and you’re feeding me the right tip at the right time. !! Can’t wait for the better weather. Really need to build chipping confidence now. Havnt got to that section yet. All the best 🙏 Richy. UK.

@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 26 күн бұрын
I appreciate that, Jess, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and teaching style are resonating with you!! The Frisbee feel is certainly a valid one and something that I have used in my instruction, oftentimes with golfers whose lead hand is the dominant one. In fact, I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and results. This is why I routinely recommend the online school - saguto.golf - to anyone who truly wishes to experience the joys of consistent, powerful, body-friendly ball striking bliss. The sequential lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. Fantastic drill. It works. Straightening the arms through the ball forces a much better finish, accuracy and control. I call it a “photo finish”. The centrifugal force of keeping your arms straight with your weight forward will keep me from falling back on the swing and finish. A perfect Rory McIlroy photo finish!. BIG DIFFERENCE. THANKS TOM!

Thanks Jerry - I'm glad you enjoyed it! It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWHbpJaDrrNmrJo Beyond that, if you search the word "drive" on this channel you'll see some related content. Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the driver it can be attributed to one of the following: 1) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the driver as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, inhibiting any further necessary forward weight loading (we should be 80/20 forward halfway down, 90/10 at impact, and 95/5 in the finish), changing the low point and rerouting the club into a steeper angle of attack (AoA). This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. Of great importance is keeping your upper torso/head in place (in other words, not moving towards the target from a face-on view) while the hips execute the lateral slide action. This preserves the swing center and the desired shallow AoA. 2) They are not allowing the length of the club to dictate the backswing path and are getting too steep as a result. The shaft of the driver is considerably longer than the other clubs and thus requires more of an around the body backswing as established by the shaft plane at address. It may "feel" flat as they take it back along the shaft plane for the first few feet, but as long as they maintain the "weight forward, shoulder down, and hands in" components while allowing the club to work around them, it should put them in the proper position at the top so they can attack the ball from the inside. (A good feel for that lead shoulder is "down and in, under the chin".) 3) Many believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. However, consider that in our stock setup with the driver the hands are even with the inside of the lead thigh (as they are with all clubs when playing a standard shot) and our ball position is even with the inside of the heel of the lead foot. This presets a very slight degree of forward shaft lean with the driver. Beyond that, the ball is behind the zero-point of the swing (which is even with the lead shoulder), meaning that without any contrived manipulations the club will still be on its descent - albeit very close to flat - at impact. So, perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants teeing it extra high and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - in general the path is still ever so slightly down. In fact, the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.5 degrees - nearly level - and it should feel level - but slightly down nonetheless. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws ) Here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” where you can learn some aspects of the system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ This will provide a nice foundational understanding of the swing keys that will ultimately get you mashing the ball through your entire bag. My pleasure, Jim! In the swing system I teach we start with our weight forward (generally 55/45 for the short and mid irons, 60/40 for the longer clubs). We achieve this by addressing the ball "stacked", shoulders over hips over knees with our weight balanced 50/50. We then simply bump our hips 1" towards the target while keeping everything else in place. That presets a little more weight forward while retaining the stacked relationship. During the swing we gradually add more forward weight load into the transition (70/30), 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. The upper torso/head - and thus the swing center - remains in place during the increasing forward weight load in the downswing. There's no "weight shift"; instead, it's just a gradually increasing load onto the lead side. And the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing. By the way, have you worked through my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker" yet? go.saguto.golf/ This is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this swing system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks for your message! Is Stack & Tilt going to become the « conventional « swing in a close future? I do think so. Once again I can tell it’s the best way to avoid bad spine torsions and it’s logically lead to more consistent strokes. I’m a 34 years player practicing this swing but not playing it yet on the course. I just notice that I got a lack of consistency with my own swing but hit always & always good shots at the practice range doing Saguto’s way. May be a lower launch and less spin but accuracy and consistency. Did Moe Norman and his swing seek anything but accuracy? Don’t think so. Golf is a game of accuracy and accuracy. I’m still working on it and gonna contact you for online lessons in a couple weeks from 🇫🇷 no doubt. Thanks for this great job. PS: I can’t flare the feet. My trail one is still 90 degrees to the target line . Flaring doesn’t match my body shape .

Actually, this body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance Stack and Tilt swing system is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and it is modeled on empirical observations of the game's greatest ball strikers. As such it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world. Watch any Tour event on TV and you'll see a significant number of players executing these motions, a fact corroborated by just how many of them have a very centered swing with the lead knee flexing and the trail leg straightening during the backswing, their lead arms on or very close to their tilted shoulder planes, and their hands deep behind their trail shoulder at the top. As such, folks can call it what they want or don't call it what they don't want, but the bottom line is that this is what so many of the best have done and continue to do, and it just happens that these same swing elements are shared with that dark sorcery known as Stack and Tilt......😎 With regard to an online lesson, I appreciate your interest! I had phased out private instruction - both in-person and virtual - awhile back so I could dedicate more time to my online school. I've not yet set a specific date for when I will resume them (it should be fairly soon), but when I do the virtual lessons will be reserved exclusively for my online school members. If you are in my online school please send me a message through the "chat" feature and I will add you to my list to be notified when slots open up. Also, I do offer an a la carte swing video analysis service to my school members as a means to support their progress in the school. Tom - really like this video. Been working hard on the left arm straight. Wow. Lots of KFC. You do a very good job on your grip of getting your hands tucked together wrapping your right upper pad over your thumb. Do you keep the left thumb short or let it go long down the grip? I like long. I've found by getting my hands married together has helped me setup solid and keep the left arm straight through impact. I use the Jumbo grip as well. Drives gained 20+ yards. I ripped a drive 303 yesterday. Not bad for a 66 year old guy.

@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 26 күн бұрын
LOL! You've been watching and listening well, Greg, as that is definitely a quote from the old archives! Yes - simply "allow" the wrist hinge to happen without forcing anything. In other words, if we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including the proper arm, wrist, and hand action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks for your message and support - I'm glad you enjoyed the episode! In the stack and tilt book they state the downswing starts with the left hip moving towards the target, clearing the hips to allow the downswing to work. I note this what you appear to be doing in this video.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 26 күн бұрын
Indeed, Andrew, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body. It's also a very powerful move that you will notice with every great ball striker. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while the head - and thus the swing center - remains in place.) Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress the early-onset spinout that causes so many to get steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. Here are some lesson videos specific to this topic: - kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6SZm4adgtt9o68 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnOXeqeIaMyofbc - kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2a7ipqBpNWHmJY Thanks, Tom

*AWESOME!!* And yes - unfortunately, Eric, such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant....... 😎 Consider that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within the realm of “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, firing the hips, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). I’m doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you. Appreciate the video Tom. The new swing has really helped me with my consistency. A question I have though is, I train all winter in a golf dome hitting off of mats and find my striking is good but when I get out to the range on natural grass it’s like I have to almost retrain. Is there a difference from mat to natural grass or is it just my imagination?
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 25 күн бұрын
I'm very glad to learn of your progress, Peter - nice job incorporating the instruction into your swing!! Yes, mats tend to do a great job of masking poorly struck shots - particularly when contact is towards the fat side - so what you are experiencing is not uncommon. The next time you are relegated to hitting off artificial surfaces, here are a couple of suggestions that can help you discern between crispy and soggy impact: 1) Get yourself an old hand towel and fold it in half. Place it no more than 2 inches behind your ball, thereby requiring you to miss the towel and make ball first contact on your downswing. As you improve, move the towel closer to the ball. The small thickness of a one-half folded towel will not impede your backswing takeaway. 2) If you can, put down a thick chalk line or some inexpensive spray foot powder on the mat about an inch in front of the ball. Try to hit the ball first and then the chalk or powder. The mark on the mat - or lack thereof - will give you instant visual feedback. . I hope that helps! Tom

This has been great. Can feel a little stiff while I get used to it but I do flush it. Only issue I have now is sometimes I am pushing the ball to the right. Not sure why but will figure it out
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 25 күн бұрын
Awesome! I'm glad to know that this drill is performing well for you! As for those pushes, this is not unexpected when working something new into the swing. In fact, it may actually be an indication of improvement to your swing path. Anyway, to assist in your "figuring it out process", it's important to know why the ball is behaving a particular way in order to reverse engineer the cause. The ball is simply responding to the flight plan assigned to it by the clubface at impact. Clubface relative to target line is the primary influencer of the ball's starting line and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. So I watched this about a week ago. I hit some balls without this method, several days ago, and it was the same old same old. I tend to pull my irons and my rescue clubs. I rewatch this today, Sunday, April 21, 2024 in particular because tomorrow at April 22. My golf league starts. I tried the three minute drill a couple of times during the day, drove over to the range and gave it a shot.… It actually seems to work really well on my irons with the very first try. I was shocked. When I would swing too fast, or forgot to keep my weight on my left leg at the start, and through most of this practice I would still make decent contact but would pull it but 90+ percent of the time and I kid you not 90+ percent I was hitting the ball straight and it was flying through the air. I did struggle on my driver until I teed the ball lower and slowed my swing a little bit. I’m gonna have to work on that. I will follow up and let you know how I do on actual grass on the first day of my golf league. Granted my putting is well below average and always has been but I’ve been pulling my irons and use a 12° loft a driver and have been slowing my swing down to try and keep it straight which is somewhat worked. Admittedly, this all seems way too good to be true, but I love this swing thought of removing variables from your swing. It just makes sense. The only question is, will you sacrifice distance, and I don’t believe it reduces my distance based on one bucket of balls I will circle back everyone. Honest to God this seems too easy of a fix so I am expecting a crash and burn within the next week or two but I’m pretty excited right now. More later.

The proof is in the pudding. Last night I went out for the first night in my local golf league, and things went well. Bear in mind that I live in southeastern Michigan, so this was really the first time I was out on the grass after a long winter. All of my iron shots were hit solid with one or two errant items where I pulled it left when I did not properly turn my shoulders or when I try to swing too quickly too hard. I am very pleased with this swing technique minimizing variables if you will because I also hit my troublesome rescue six and rescue seven well. I look forward to possibly hitting a lot more par threes this summer season because of this. I don’t know if this technique is intended to be used with fairway woods and driver off the tee. I’m trying to incorporate it into those clubs as well as I just want one consistent swing. So far I’m making decent contact with my Threewood off the ground as well as my five wood, although it’s a bit low but I’ll work on that. Off the tea I found that I have to take it down to the lowest setting on those tees with three black lines and then I do make solid contract and hit it down the fairway. Thank you very much. I’m glad I caught this video. I’ve watched you on and off for the last couple of years along with some of your competitors Alex Elliott, and Mr. short game to name a few, but this is the best tip I’ve ever been able to apply. Forgive me but it does still seem too good to be true. So simple so quick to be able to convert it to good use. I know to others reading this, will probably think I’m your kindly uncle ed or something but honest to God this works. Why didn’t I find out about this a long long time ago. I’m 58 years old and this would’ve made golf a lot more enjoyable. Grain of salt thrown in. I’m literally into week one of this method, so hopefully it doesn’t wear off at some point. But I’ve saved the video as a favorite so that I can go back and review it overtime.

I shot a 45 or nine holes of course. Normally this time of the season I’d be for five strokes higher. Generally, I’m a bogey golfer my putting sucks and when I get close to the greens because of a previous problem with solid accuracy with my approach shots from 165 and out, that was a deadly combination. Mediocre to poor putting and not hitting the green in regulation means bogeys or worse. Honestly par threes have been the bane of my existence for that very reason so I am feeling a lot more positive going into this season.

If you measured shoulder tilt at the top of the backswing, it would be about 43 degrees (pointing about a yard past the ball) and halfway past impact or right arm parallel it would be about 54 degrees ( or pointing about a half a yard past the ball). All the great ball strikers are within a couple of degrees of those numbers. Its good advice to get that lead shoulder lower as many amateurs are way too flat, like 23-25 degrees at the top of backswing.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 26 күн бұрын
Yes - The "feel" of pointing that lead shoulder at the ball - though slightly exaggerated - is a necessary one for most to achieve the appropriate amount of tilt and thereby retain their relationship with the ball, which is critical if consistently crispy ball striking results are to be expected. Thanks for your validating data and remarks! Tom

Im still young and flexible and i havent seen you do it but you could try to put your feet a little bit wider and pointing the toe a little bit to the exterior (kind of like a duck, watch Tom's feet) Doing so, when rotating, is your belt buckle able to get inline with the front of your back foot and his your chest button able to get complete 90 degrees back from ball. Your front knee will bend forward and your back leg will extend a bit. Tell me if you can reach that after maybe we can talk about trailarm wrist hinge while keeping the elbow tuck in and your head slightely tilting like its now your front eye a front ear that look at the ball, If you look at 10-12 second and pause or put on slow youll see it from his backswing.

As @ticopain conveyed in reply to you in this thread, it all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. Have you looked into the comprehensive, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish. And if you'd like to first "dip a toe in the water" prior to diving into the school, then here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ That is where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner. You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing, experience great ball striking, and reclaim - or even exceed - yardages from years past. I hope you'll give the school some thought. Tom

I notice in other videos I've seen that teach the stack and tilt method, the tilt seems to be more at the target, whereas in your videos ( which I love btw) your tilt seems to be more towards the ball. Am I correct in this observation? The stack and tilt gets some hate on the Internet but your method seems so simple and common sense. 👍

Hi Daniel, While the action is literally a tilt towards the target, when you add the dynamics of turning and extending the tilt component is actually what preserves our relationship to the ball during the backswing as you described. Having said that, I do understand that “tilt” can be a confusing concept to grasp initially. However, it is a critical component of the swing no matter what club you have in your hands, and you'll see it in the motions of all the best players in the world. If you tilt toward the target while keeping your head in place you will introduce the other components of turning and extending to put your body in the perfect backswing position with your shoulder oriented downward towards the ball. To get a feel for the coordinating of these elements we can reverse engineer it as follows: Without a club in your hands rest the top of your forehead against a wall to keep it in place and assume your setup posture. Without allowing your head to move execute the targetward side tilting motion and watch what happens. Magically your lead shoulder has turned downward, and your spine has extended!! Here's another way to go about it: 1) Get into your setup posture 2) Stand up straight (extend) 3) While standing erect (extended) tilt your upper body towards the target, keeping your hips in place. (In other words, if you are right-handed, stand up straight and tilt your torso to the left like it's the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Vice versa obviously for lefties.) 4) Now that you are extended and tilted, turn your upper body as you would in your backswing, keeping your weight forward while allowing your hips to turn 45 degrees and your trail leg to straighten. There you have your backswing - tilted, turned, and extended!! While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system including the tilting, turning extending, and weight forward elements. Yes - sadly, Stack and Tilt was relentlessly attacked by the "mainstream" of failed "instruction" whose erroneous concepts were threatened by the truth, and their nefarious efforts successfully - albeit temporarily - attached an undeserving "stigma" to the S&T name among those who chose not to do their own research. The bottom line is this: The body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance Stack and Tilt swing system is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and it is modeled on empirical observations of the game's greatest ball strikers. As such it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world. As you observe, we can watch any Tour event on TV and we'll see a significant number of players executing these motions, a fact corroborated by just how many of them have a very centered swing with the lead knee flexing and the trail leg straightening during the backswing, their lead arms on or very close to their tilted shoulder planes, and their hands deep behind their trail shoulder at the top. Thousands of folks across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result of learning this swing system through my online school, and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. Compare and contrast that with the sad reality that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within that realm of “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, firing the hips, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). Thanks, Tom

I needed to quit thinking and feeling like my left shoulder moved “around” my spine. It never happened and all I ended up doing was moving my spine Away from its starting point. So I’d have a sway back. Consequently the only time I ever played good golf was when I could recover from that backward weight shift with a huge shift forward towards the target, time everything right, make solid contact down on the ball and finish in a pretty good position. When I had it grooved I could hit balls for hours and it felt great. Problem was there’s no way to be consistent with that much weight shifting. So literally a day later I’m back to square one trying to find the groove again. 25 years ago. Then, I worked hard on turning away from the ball with the feeling of tilting towards the target. Bending the left knee forward and not back like Johnny Miller on the backswing. Things centered and I played good and consistent. Got to a plus. 15 years ago. Now, my next great feel is driving my left shoulder down, and the right shoulder up. No more thinking as if it’s a turn, or around. My thoughts are now “up and down” Same with my left and right hips. I’ve always had extremely shallow shoulder angle at the top, and the left arm at least 20 degrees steeper. I’d lift my arms like crazy… trying to swing “around”. Terrible early extension through impact. So by moving my left shoulder as low as it can go, and my right shoulder as high as it can be, I’ve also kept my spine angle and have my back face the target while feeling like I’m over the ball, not a foot behind it. In addition, I’m moving my right hip back away from the ball and snapping them with the left hip moving away from the ball before impact, eliminating early extension (future goal). Hips can’t lazily square up to the ball and lean toward it-breaking off all proper angles all over your swing. One of my favorite swings of all time.. my go-to tempo swing thought,, but Payne Stewart was an over-extender. It’s up/down-up/down for me now.. no more ‘turning’, ‘around’, ‘away’… Everything I’ve written is similar to Tom’s teaching in at least one way. We are not talking about the “little muscles”. Just trying to control the big parts. Over the years, I have gotten so technical with wristy stuff, swing plane obsession, stuff like that. Now, I realize that those things fall into place AFTER you’ve cemented the foundation. Last thing, my entire setup position has been revolutionized. Before, I’d setup how you’re supposed to “setup”. We all know. But now, like as in 2024, I’ve setup in the best positions to make the proper backswing. So instead of setting up to setup, I now setup to make the proper backswing. What I’ve noticed because of this mental revelation.. my entire right side goes softer. My right elbow is dying to fold against my right side and allow the left shoulder to drive down, the left arm to press against my upper chest on the same plane as the shoulders. The right hip shoots up, the left quickly drops down. I feel so much more uncluttered. My setup just to setup had me completely trying to overpower the setup and backswing with my right side. My right elbow would be facing out, my right arm would be covering my left from the down the line video. My right shoulder would feel higher than my left, at address. I hated those feelings. Was kind of embarrassed by the look, because on TV all the pros have that nice relaxed right arm at address and I never knew why I didn’t. I was always trying to start low and slow and trying to have width, but it was my right arm doing all this so it never allowed the left side to move properly. It’s like my right (dominate) arm tried to fight against the left side from making the proper backswing. Now, my left elbow is pointing out towards the target and my right elbow feeling like it’s already tucked and ready to obey, collapse, and roll over… not freakin’ battle my entire swing like it has been doing my whole life! That’s all. I’ll re-read 12:35 and edit this chapter later 😊 I’m a Paying Member, “IPM” 😂

Well, that's quite the novel documentary on the metamorphosis of a golf swing - your version of "War and (eventually) Peace", I suppose?.....😎 I reckon the Readers Digest version - which is about all the time I can afford given the sheer volume of post-Masters activity here - would encapsulate as follows: _"If we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including the proper arm, wrist, and hand action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power." _ Thanks for sharing for the benefit of any and all who may be daring! Tom

What Saguto teaches is referred to as a one plane swing. A great book to read is "The Plane Truth for Golfers" by Jim Hardy and John Andrisani. This book compares and contrasts the one plane swing that Saguto teaches versus the two plane swing used by golfers such as David Love, Hale Irwin, and Tom Watson. In the two plane swing the shoulders stay flatter in the back swing. The left shoulder does not point to the ground as Saguto teaches. The one plane swinger is simpler because you keep the club on one plane, but as much as I've tried it, it does not work for me, a formal baseball player. My swing is more timing based, I do shift my weight and I swing my arms. It requires better timing. It is more like snapping a towel. One swing is not better than the other, but read the book if you want to know which works best for you.

Wanted to just add that I think Tom does a great job on his videos. Also, when I mentioned I was a baseball player I meant to say I was a pitcher, which requires learning how to move your arms as fast as possible, similar to driving a stake in the ground, or chopping wood. A two swing golfer is focused on accelerating his arms in a delayed manner that feels effortless with good timing, but it can be hard to do the same timing on a consistent bases. The one play swing relies more on turning the body (shoulder and hips) vigorously, which does not work for me.

I appreciate your kind words regarding my instruction and teaching persona. As a former baseball player myself, I do understand what you are saying, and while there are certainly some similarities between baseball and golf, there are also some considerable differences. Having said that, I do incorporate baseball analogies and feels in my lessons. For example, as they relate to pitching I teach the retraction of the trail shoulder at the top, leading with the trail elbow in the downswing, and retaining the angle in the trail wrist. Good idea here. This drill doesn't require spending money on balls at the range. Been doing this for years. Do this in your back yard. I put a leaf or twig at where the ball the would normally be and when this exercise is working correctly you'll see how your club head should be when it hits the nadir of the downswing - just past that twig. If you really want to see if you're getting the correct swing you can get some golf whiffle balls and test it out afterwards. I also carry this exercise to the course before tee off to make sure my sequence is working. Keep swinging until I hit that right spot consistently.

My main concerns with regard to grip are that the handle remains secure in the fingers throughout the entirety of the motion and that the proper hinging and unhinging of the wrists is fully supported without any contrived effort. Beyond that, each golfer is free to add their own individual flair and determine what works best for them. Tom

Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it!! Grip pressure is something that is very unique to each of us, which is why conveying personal "feels" in this regard have led so many golfers astray. For example, a 2 out of 10 “baby bird” grip to a strong guy like Sam Snead may equate to an 8 out of 10 to another golfer. We definitely don't want that handle swimming around in our hands because we're so loosey goosey that we can't control the clubface. A secure grip and soft arms are what we're after here. That prescription will certainly resonate differently for different folks, but the key is that our grip pressure should give us complete control of the club while not introducing swing-killing tension that prevents us from properly executing the motion and/or robs us of speed potential. Finding that sweet spot is a highly individual thing, and it is critical to consistently blissful ballstriking. @SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 13 күн бұрын
The lead knee flexes as the trail knee straightens during the backswing, both in their outwardly flared orientation that we preset at address. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Tom

I’ve been striping the ball Tom. Long and straight almost effortlessly. No feeling like it!

I know, right? That feeling of crispy compression and then watching the ball take off like a rocket with seemingly minimal effort is a beautiful thing!! Thanks for sharing your ball striking success and keep up the great work!! 💪💪 TS

does front shoulder pointing at the ball also help keep you on plain?

Absolutely! My coach told me that the power in the long play comes from the lower body. in your explanation with turning the shoulders , it seems that you crate the power with the upper body ? what is correct ??

When properly deployed in sequence, Martin, our lower body absolutely plays a role in preserving our downswing path and can certainly provide a power boost. When prematurely or incorrectly activated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor on the rotational component, thereby enabling the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body. It's also a move that you will notice with every great ball striker. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while the head - and thus the swing center - remains in place.) This will occur naturally if we allow it to, but unfortunately the misguided "fire the hips" notion has plagued so many amateurs with an early-onset spinout that makes them steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. For them, the "feel" of the shoulders leading will help them to overcome this, correctly engage their hips, and fix their path, thereby leading them to a solid, "crispy" impact condition. Here are some lesson videos specific to the topic of the proper lower body action: - kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6SZm4adgtt9o68 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnOXeqeIaMyofbc - kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2a7ipqBpNWHmJY In more general terms, it is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, step-by-step, position-by-position learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing as it will make for a far more efficient and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through my KZbin content.
