Every day presents the challenge of evolving our editing techniques to captivate the audience effectively. It's an invitation to be bold and capture attention in the right way. Innovative camera angles, breaking a few rules, playing with lighting, cranking up the FX volume, and mooore you're absolutely spot on, Alex!

Having worked in restaurants for over 20 years, I can tell you The Bear absolutely feels authentic. This is a great breakdown as to why. I'm more of a writer/director than a tech guy, but I am taking some of these pacing lessons with me into the writing process because I am aware of people's shortening attention spans. I would be curious to read the scripts for The Bear and see how these scenes were written as opposed to how they came out on the screen.

Honestly, the editing I've been seeing in movies lately just feels exhausting. I'll admit a lot of older movies drug things out way longer than necessary (2001 Space Odyssey was not a fun experience for me, sorry), but newer movies have gone to the other end of the spectrum. I find myself getting to the end of the movie and not feeling like there were any particular moments that truly resonated. Just action after action after action and then it ends. There has to be a happy medium between the two approaches.

Honestly I can agree with you. I feel like some movies try to jam a ton of information or just throw a bunch of eye candy at you, hoping to retain the audience.

I'm going back and rewatching fave old b&w's cuz story exists, editing is on line with the story abd sound design doesn't overwhelm (yes I sound like the @crankyoldfilmmaker that I am)

Really interesting even though I would never watch this show. A glorified cooking show is still never going to get me no matter the fanciest editing. But a good breakdown. appreciated.

I hear you man, but I’m telling you this show is actually really good. I thought the same thing until I heard all the hype about it, and I was curious to see what the hype was about and I promise you it’s for a good reason. Great editing, great acting and great directing.

I don't necessarily think attention spans are shortening. I think our interest in things have shortened. If the attention span thing is true, then why would we bing watch on netflix? Films have also gone from 2 hours to 3 hours in most cases.

That’s actually a really good point however The style of editing has completely changed over the years I think the pacing of films and TV is a lot faster than it used to be.

@@Alexzarfatifilms I can completely agree there. There’s a time and place for the style. Watching The Holdovers was a super slow film. If it was edited like The Bear, it wouldn’t have the same affect. Understanding how to shoot for the environment is key as well. I’m Greek. My family owned restaurants. So I can relate when watching the fast paced cuts cause it really is like that.

@@Alexzarfatifilms we've all done that, at one point when tunnel vision sets in, and you loose ability to critically see what you're working on. That's why apart from taking breaks, I like to work on parallel projects to switch to, when I need something else to refresh my mind with and still work.
