Yes it makes sense. Trolls whom moved away from the Moon well didn't truly transform into night elves. I don't see how this is against any role.

The trolls who resided near the Well of Eternity, known as dark trolls, began to change after prolonged exposure to its magic. They eventually evolved into Night Elves. After the War of the Ancients, the Highborne Night Elves who still wished to use Arcane magic were exiled and traveled to the northern regions of the eastern continent, now known as the Eastern Kingdoms. Over time, these exiled Highborne began to change as well. After their exile, they traveled to the Eastern Kingdoms and settled in what would become Quel'Thalas. There, they used a vial of water from the Well of Eternity, which they had secretly taken with them, to create the Sunwell. The Sunwell became the source of their arcane power and a central part of their civilization. The transformation of the Highborne into High Elves wasn't solely because of the Sunwell. The change was more gradual and cultural. Over time, as the Highborne adapted to their new environment and distanced themselves from their Night Elf heritage (both physically and culturally), they began to change in appearance and lifestyle. They became more diurnal, their skin tone lightened, and they developed different societal structures. The Sunwell did play a crucial role in sustaining their arcane powers, but it was the combination of these factors that led to the Highborne evolving into what are now known as High Elves.
