This is the all-new plug-in hybrid Range Rover Sport, and Mat’s about to find out whether you should choose it over the petrol-powered edition!
For starters, it looks pretty striking and is instantly recognisable as a Range Rover Sport. When it comes to design differences compared to the standard Range Rover Sport… Well, there aren’t any! Apart from the charging port towards the rear of the car, the plug-in hybrid and petrol cars are identical.
It’s a similar story on the inside, too! It comes with a large infotainment screen, good quality materials throughout the majority of the cabin, and big, comfortable seats. The only difference compared to the petrol-powered car is some additional screens on the infotainment system, as well as new options on the digital dials to allow you to drive in electric-power mode.
Under the bonnet, you’ll find a 3-litre turbocharged straight-six engine along with an electric motor. The range-topping edition can produce 510hp, which sends power to all four wheels.
As for the price, well it’s pretty expensive, coming in at just under £114,000! But then again, that’s only £4,000 more than the petrol-powered car! So with that in mind, should you just choose the plug-in hybrid instead? Stick with Mat and see for yourself!

I have a discovery sport hybrid (which I love), that has exactly the same issue as when Mat tried to launch it in electric mode. You will find its an EV heater issue, I used to run my hybrid in pure EV mode and got fantastic mileage for the 15 or so miles I usually do a day. A the start of winter wouldn't stay in EV mode and my mileage is now 35mpg! Must be a known issue when I took it to LR they diagnosed it immediately, sadly the EV heaters are on back order and 8 weeks later I'm still waiting for mine.....

PHEVS only exist because of legislation, it only makes sense if you keep charging the battery otherwise it is just dead weight and deteriorates massively your MPG hence buying a petrol only version is not that a bad idea for many people

Untrue. Even if you never plug it in at all you still get a substantial benefit from energy recovery under braking, and the ability to do slow stop-start rush hour condition without burning a lot of fuel at the most wasteful crawling speed for internal combustion. Just like a normal non plug-in hybrid
@slanahesh
@slanahesh Жыл бұрын
Phevs exist because until relatively recently it was mega expensive to pack enough batteries into a car to get an acceptable range and it was reasonably easy to convert an existing model to phev without rebuilding your cars from the ground up to support full ev. These days though they only really still get made to satisfy eu emissions regulations and get company car tax reductions for ice cars still on sale.
@mickfinn2596
@mickfinn2596 Жыл бұрын
@@harryspeakup8452 Thats just wrong. I used to own a Range Rover P400e PHEV and the energy recovery under braking was minimal, certainly not enough to increase the battery range by a single mile. And the other problem was that, just like the new Sport P510e PHEV reviewed in this video, there is no capability for the engine to charge the battery. Basically in both cars, once the battery runs out they just become a car 400kg heavier than the equivalent petrol/diesel version with a smaller fuel tank so not only do they consume more fuel but the range is reduced even further because of the smaller tank. I have just replaced my P400e with a new Sport D300 and that is achieving 35-37mpg on fast motorway runs and is averaging 33mpg overall (compared to 27.9mpg for the P510e in this test). And apart from that it handles and rides better than the PHEV (I test drove both the P440e and D300 before I made my decision) because of its lower weight and has space for a spare wheel. No contest overall

The whole point of a plug-in hybrid is to be able to take short journeys on electric alone, and then use the engine for the occasional long journey. What is the point if you can even go over 30 miles an hour without the engine kicking in? It’s almost like range Rover aren’t taking this seriously…🙄

@5lbcakemix501
@5lbcakemix501 Жыл бұрын
USUALLY most manufacturers kick in the electric motor after about 30ish mph regardless if you've set it to EV only, since they don't TYPICALLY design it for much higher speeds. Couldn't tell you why, maybe efficiency of the motor dips down and designing around it would cost too much?
@bmcl364

We have the same with our Evoque too.
@arsenalftw1
@arsenalftw1 9 ай бұрын
It might be worth getting an oil change and reset the oil counter. Have experienced on some Evoque PHEV's, the oil dilution will prevent correct operation of EV. There has also been a change in oil spec. This is only if your vehicle starts in EV, gets up to 12-15ish MPH and then ICE kicks in. Other issues are with the HV coolant heater, they can lock themselves out, car will start in EV but as soon as you pull away it will kick in ICE.

@@badlarry172 Yes, I drive a Disco Sport p300e. The save mode will still give you hybrid drive at low speeds but does preserve battery very well. At higher speeds, let’s say 40+, i.e. dual carriage way and motorway driving, I have regularly taken the battery from 10% or less to 80% in approx 50 to 60 miles of driving. I have a regular trip of approx 110 miles mostly motorway, I start on a full charge and do the first ~25 miles on battery, then switch to ICE in Save mode for the next ~50/60, which gets you to the max 80% recovery, then finish the journey on the recovered charge. The loss in ICE running mpg while in save mode is marginal at higher speeds, which makes the overall trip very efficient. Works for me.

Imagine new SVR's 0to 60mph time😏
@HandHaben
@HandHaben Жыл бұрын
it’s not that much faster. the SVR only has about 50more horsepower than this but is not backed up by the instant torque provided by the electric motors that this has. so in most everyday cases (setting off from traffic lights, 0-30/45 runs) this would most probably be faster than an SVR
@rrageneral1499
@rrageneral1499 Жыл бұрын
@@HandHaben I would also argue that despite the remarkable progress these fast SUVs have made, they just aren't meant for tracks or quick driving. The top end models just seem like a money grab when you can get fast enough models for a lot less (in the same model line).

Mat, generally electric cars are better at wading through water as it is all waterproofed. The first generation Nissan leaf can Wade 700mm of water. Compare that to an ICE hatchback and nothing even comes close to how good it at going through water.

The reason the PHEV isn’t much more expensive is because anyone with their head screwed on wouldn’t chose an already big, complicated, fault-prone car but with x2 drive trains, x2 the chance to go wrong. Wouldn’t touch a PHEV personally, sticking with diesel/petrol or (maybe in the future) a pure EV.

Not allowing a 0-60 in EV mode only is such a great safety feature. I almost crashed while overtaking last summer in a Peugeot 508 hybrid because it was in EV mode when I floored the accelerator. In hybrid mode the overtake would have been totally safe
@joonapuro8055
@joonapuro8055 Жыл бұрын
Not true at all. I can easily accelerate to the highway on pure ev mode on my a3 e-tron almost 100/100 times. However if you suddenly plant your foot ICE will kick in. The issues for you were 1. You did not know the power of your car in ev mode well enough, and do your moves based on that and 2. You drove a peugeot which apparently doesn't work that well 😂

@@joonapuro8055 well how can you answer to my comment regarding a Peugeot car from driving an Audi? Your first point is also wrong as I do know the ev mode's power limitations but as with many close-call situations, this happened too because of human error on my part; I didn't realise I was in ev mode and not in hybrid, because there is no differentiation between the two modes in the gauge cluster, apart from a tiny text that. I wouldn't put a crying from laughter -emoji as a response for someone who's just sharing his own experience about one particular car.
