Puncayshun is still playing too safe so I don't see him break the 1:37:xx anytime soon. He also seems to be in a speedrunning break right now. Cheese is going to step down now because he has a lot of IRL stuff going so I don't see him break it, either. Liam is a grinding machine with insane skill who adapted difficult strategies from shorter categories after coming back from a long break. He has the highest potential to break this record now. Simply is an insane player as well and I believe that reaching the 1:37:xx is his big goal. He recently had one of the best first hour runs of the 120 star category ever. It's only a matter of time until he comes close to the record of cheese. (Or breaks it) And with Weegee who is the 70 star wr holder we have a very young and talented runner who is learning 120 stars right now and has so much potential in this category because he never uses safe strats. Besides that we still have veteran runners like Taggo or promising newcomers like Dowsky who is learning 120 stars as well. The future of sm64 speedrunning won't be boring.

I disagree. Doing athletics keeps your body healthy, and I've found that doing larger movements balances out the fine movements you have to do in gaming or music. Meanwhile, playing music gives you discipline, teaches you how to practice and optimize your fine movements, and keeps your senses sharp. There's a reason why most people aren't good at just one thing, and why people who are great at one thing tend to be multi-talented. Also, having multiple pursuits means you have more opportunities for small successes throughout the day. If he no lifed it, his physical and mental health might not sustain his performance, and he might burn out quicker.
@TheZenytram
@TheZenytram 2 жыл бұрын
@@mbvglider you are totally right. Also the practice he has while playing is more efficient, he focus in it the whole time he is doing it, if he no life it he would waste a whole lot of time hitting his head in the all without being in 100% capacity to train himself. the focus is limited by around 40 minute and diminishs really fast after that, doing all those things makes his mind fresh so he can concentrate and deal with anxiety way better than otherwise.

I have to agree with the replies here. All of the most clever and useful ideas I've had came from experience in completely unrelated fields and activities. As a casual speedrun viewer SM64 feels the most weird and interesting from a strategy standpoint. This feels like the longest game where world record runners are using strategies that can save like less than 10 seconds with huge risk. Most other runs that have skips like that save like over a minute with usually multiple tries just being part of the run if it's a bad try at the skip instead of a one shot.
@fnors2
@fnors2 2 жыл бұрын
I think this is a testament to how well-made SM64 really is as a game. It doesn't really try to force the player to play a certain way, and the mechanics of the game are pretty simple and solid (even with the glitches following from that era of gaming). Add in that every stage is very "episodic" and it raises the skill ceiling quite a lot. On the other hand, games that have glitches that provide huge skips and time saves tend to be more linear or "gated" in their progressions. RPGs, cut-scene heavy games, or games with strict mechanics/flags/keys (Legend of Zelda, Metroid, etc) come to mind. Though, it's still a bit unfair to compare a SM64 120+ stars run to some any% category in a game with heavy time-saves glitches. Because you can technically use glitches in SM64 to skip _huge_ chunks of the game and complete it in less than 10 minutes by collecting 0 or 1 star. The categories do end up playing a role in strategies used.

cheese is such a joy to watch! I loved keeping up with his grind to master the more difficult or obscure strats so he could seamlessly slot them into his runs. I'm so glad he hit a new wr, since his perseverance is admirable and reactions are amazing. ty for covering this absolute legend once again!

One thing to consider is not doing the low percentage tricks when you don't need them could be better for the sport when these records get traded back and forth the game stays more relivent because the record seems obtainable so more people continue to grind out runs. Rather than some games that just seem to go dark for years until a new glitch is found.

Taking risks in 120 star requires some courage for sure. If you fail a risky strat, you might lose a run over an hour long. That's painful. But it's good to see taking risks paid off :) Also it was so inspiring to see Cheese developing alternate mashing technique due to his injury. That is some real dedication there, not even injury can prevent a pro speedrunner from reaching their goal! :)

Cheese watched your video about Liam on his stream. At the end he said he could feel the competition rising in him. That he wanted to get the world record back. I wonder how badly Liam is going to want it back after this video... I'm excited to see what comes next! Also, when Cheese broke the record, he only had 3 hours to stream before he had to do other things... I don't know why but that makes it even more impressive to me
