08:50 KMFDM was also a huge fixture in 80s industrial, they just took off in the early 1990s when they added Gunter Schultz as a guitar player. System Of A Down has released new music this year dude. All of those headlining bands are still making records. They've put out enough of a catalog to headline. They sell enough tickets to warrant a setlist that long. The last Evanescence album was really good and has some of their best material to date. Deftones are still my favorite band from the time that I first I heard Around The Fur. I think the bigger issue is that Limp Bizkit isn't headlining. Their last album was nice and they've proven that they can play in front of hundreds of thousands of people at Lolla just last year. I was fortunate enough to catch them the day before with Spiritbox, at the Metro which holds 1100 people. Great show. Spiritbox was good but the energy in the room when Limp Bizkit came on is something that you can't describe anywhere but a Limp Bizkit show. The reasons why these bands are up there is because they've did their time and have earned it. They have what people want and they can deliver it. I don't see Spiritbox ready to headline Lolla. Bring Me The Horizon is just starting to earn a spot like that with like 9 records. Limp Bizkit did Woodstock by their second album, Korn was on their 3rd. It's up to the bands to make music that people like, it's not up to you to decide what people like. Sorry, big fan, but not sorry for disagreeing with your take on "nostalgia" vs. earning your spot as top dog by grinding.

To be honest, I'm 35, so quite a few of these bands are longtime favorites of mine who I've seen before, but I think it's cool to be able to see them all at one place. Plus I'd be really excited to see newer bands like Spiritbox, Health, and Turnstile, but maybe I'm in the minority with that for my age. I think there's room for both new and old. You pretty much have to include the older bands mixed in with the newer, because I've noticed that most people won't go out of their way to discover new music, or go to see shows with only the smaller, lesser-known bands playing. I read somewhere that most people pretty much stop looking for new music to get into by 30 years old or so. But anyway, I also like the industrial rock bands on the bill like The Birthday Massacre, Orgy and Stabbing Westward (who just put out a really good new album earlier this year).

Interestingly, about a 1/3rd of these bands are industrial bands (KMFDM, Ministry, Sisters of Mercy, Skinny Puppy, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, Stabbing Westward) or Industrial adjacent (Orgy, Filter, HEALTH, London After Midnight, The Birthday Massacre). Several of the newer bands definitely have some amount of industrial influences (Death Grips, Spiritbox). Personally I would be surprised if we didn't Courtney make at least one guest appearance on someone else's stage (deftones/korn maybe?). I think it's also important to realize that not every festival is trying to replace Warped Tour. They don't all have to present nothing but new bands, and the bands that have been around long enough for it to be their full time job "know where their bread is buttered."

What’s awesome about this is that it’s also a bit of an Industrial festival. To have Skinny Puppy, Ministry, KMFDM, Thrill Kill Kult, Orgy, Death Grips, and Ho99o9 there is excellent. And then Death Grips and Ho99o9 are what I would say are some of the quintessential artists that incorporate industrial into hip hop.

It's truly a shame that more people don't know about The Birthday Massacre. Saw them in San Antonio back in Dec 2011. The singer spent like an hour behind the building after the show just talking to fans. She talked to my brother and I for like half an hour. Also, why the KMFDM shade? They never stop putting out albums. Hell, their newest stuff has some really good stuff on it. WWIII (2003) turns 20 this year. And it holds up, hell, their late 80s stuff still holds up.

Nostalgia is huge for people who were born the 70s, 80s. Why else would 80s music still be so popular? And whether you agree or not, a lot of today's music just doesn't stick like it used to. Probably because we have other things fighting for the same attention. Personally I love discovering new bands. On the daily I'm looking for something new. And as a musician who writes original music I clearly am with you regarding new music. But if I'm a promoter, putting millions of own dollars into an event of this size I'm going with nostalgia. But that's just me. I still would like to see new music get more attention but I feel that may never be what it used to be.
@thenumberonebeaner22112 жыл бұрын
80s music is all around fantastic, it's not just nostalgia. Kids today love it too. But you point out the problem of new artists not getting any shine. Producers only want to make money and they know they'll make it if the put out big popular bands for people that are now settling in life and will have some extra cash to relive the days when they could have sex without boner pills. And as consumers, we won't pay $300+ to see artists we know nothing about. It's not that new music sucks, a lot of it a very good. It's just the confort zone for our brains, what we know will release our brain chemicals to feel enjoyment. Most people driving home after a long day at work aren't going to put on new music they have to pay attention to to enjoy, they're going to put something they already know helps them unwind and decompress.
@raulgarza25172 жыл бұрын
@@thenumberonebeaner2211 all excellent points. For most people the music we got into as kids is what we tend to stick to the rest of our lives. You're absolutely right that most people don't have the time or energy to take in new music and artists. I still love to listen to albums and music on headphones, start to finish uninterrupted like I did as a kid. People just don't do that anymore.

The other problem is that rock simply isn't the cultural flagship that it used to be. This is not to say that newer and younger bands aren't forming and putting out music. It's just a different time than the 70's and 80's. I live in Los Angeles, which was one of the most important cities in the world for all kinds of rock. Now go out driving on the roads and you rarely hear any kind of rock coming out of someone's speakers.

After looking at footage of this fest me I'm so thankful I said no to nu metal and hot topic mall goth when it was offered to me as a teen, be thankful for bands like Cannibal Corpse who aren't confined to the passing trends of an era while maintaining their intense vital energy and ability to whip a crowd up while still putting out good albums. This may be one of the most hilariously pathetic fests I've ever seen, it was fascinating to watch and a brutal retribution of time on commercial bands playing to a fanbase that you can't believe actually enjoys music on any level. The apathetic, plump and rotund low energy crowd very concerned with playing with their phone while half heartedly singing the chorus to every bands "you know, that song", the horribly aged and low energy bands hocking their 2 riffs and Fred Durst/Trent Reznor impressions with "get out of my room dad" lyrics while limping out of breath across the stage evokes diabolical laughter at the passing of nu metal and mall goth into the grave of nostalgia acts. What a truly awful rotten time that was to be a young person (kids getting into metal and hardcore these days have the world served to them on a platter), the worst era of music, still thankful for bands not breaking and bowing to the trends and persevering. I can't say that about the pathetic Cavalera who want it both ways but can't maintain respect in either camps. Rest in piss nu metal, now fuck off.

If we had newer bands doing all different types of sounds from new sounds to older sounds to unique sounds, then everyone would be happy. But we live in a world where trends change all the time and nothing lasts forever.

I'd be terrified that DG weren't going to actually show up tho. I also had no idea She Wants Revenge was still a band, I still spin their self-titled. I've seen System a couple times, don't really need to again, last time Deftones was with them, meh. Actually saw Papa Roach at Big Day Off when they and Disturbed and Linkin Park were small and Slipknot was headlining. Lacuna Coil I never had heard till seeing at some Ozzfest, they were fine and fun. Saw Chevelle with Disturbed, snore. Hearing those songs from Incubus or Flyleaf or P.O.D. or Hoobastank or Alien Ant Farm live for the FIRST time in 2023 would be FUCKING HILARIOUS, full stop. I am scared to even know what Incubus might look like now, I'm still picturing a hot 20-something when I listen to those old singles. Cradle of Filth fucking sucks. My Life With the Thrill Kill Cult and Ministry is stuff my mom was listening to before I was born. SOAD might ensure she actually goes to this show. Melvins always looks out of place to me being in any lineup with normal bands--and WTF, Mr. Bungle is a thing still? Would I pay hundreds to see an aged Mike Patton rap about having sex with food? Crazy to think about. When I went to Ozzfest 2000, Ozzy and Pantera were the only two older bands on main stage. Godsmack and Static X were just below them in the lineup with only having one album released at the time. Below that was Incubus, Methods Of Mayhem, Queens Of The Stone Age, and Pitchshifter. Literally all but the top two were fresh to the scene back then. Hell, Disturbed was so new at the time that they were on second stage right when Stupify started to take off.
