This was one Mopar that I never would have expected to go to the junkyard but there it was at one of my local #picknpull yards. This #sporttop 1968 plymouth Fury III really didn't deserve to be parted out. Yes she had some rust but overall sge was very solid. There was a 1984 Chrysler New Yorker next to it that some may say also deserved to be saved but not in my opinion. Anyhow the 68. was sporting a 318 under the hood and the interior wasnt in too bad of shape. There was even a cool vintage spare tire in the trunk.

Whoa Nelley, Fury that shouldn't be in the yard, surely. The problem with these is parts, at least body parts. Some may be available, but they don't make them like they do for the popular cars. So, you'd have to get someone that's good with fabrication. But, it could be saved. We got the VIN, we win: P for Plymouth Fury, X for Fury III two door "Fast Top", 23 for two door hardtop, F for 318 V8 with two barrel, 8 for 1968 model year, D for Belvidere, IL assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Belvidere plant opened on Wednesday July 7, 1965 and still operates today under Stellantis, currently assembling the Jeep Cherokee since 2017. Southwest Chrysler still operates today at 2235 N. Main Street in Cleburne, TX. We got the tag, we can brag: PX23 for Fury III two door "Fast Top", 41 for 318 V8 engine, 5 for three speed automatic transmission, M5X for Black interior trim, FF1 for Mist Green Metallic exterior paint, R-1 for AM radio, S-1 for AC equipped, u-1 for sold car (ordered by someone), 78 for wheel lip moldings, AX1 for 2.76 rear axle ratio, X-3 may be tinted glass, all windows (makes sense since it has AC), B01 is possibly Wednesday, November 1, 1967 production. It appears that it had 8.25x14 "blue" sidewall tires originally by code 51 being there. The Chrysler "Air Temp" system was an absolute meat locker when it worked correctly, so much so that Chrysler made "Air Temp" central air units for houses for a time. The Firestone 500 radial tire was recalled in the late 1970s due to tread separation and there were a few fatalities and many blowouts and injuries as a result. Firestone had not perfected their radial tires and used the public as a test bed of sorts. Many Ford vehicles had Firestone tires because the Ford and Firestone families were intermarried. That might be a novelty to hang on to. LOL. 1984 Chrysler 5th Ave, with the VIN for the win: 1C3 for US made Chrysler, B for manual seat belts, F for 5th Avenue, 6 for special, 6 for four door sedan, P for 318 V8 with two barrel, X is a check digit, E for the 1984 model year, X for St. Louis, MO #2 plant assembly, and the rest is the production sequence. The St. Louis plant complex eventually assembled minivans for a time and then closed 2009 with both the North and South plants being razed in 2011. We got the tag, we can brag: PA6 for Charcoal exterior paint, QA6 should be a Charcoal leather interior trim, U should be US spec vehicle, among other codes. The Chrysler 5th Ave was an "M" body and based for the most part on the Aspen and Volare. The Diplomat and Gran Fury were cousins. They had reliable engines, but awful carburetion, sloppy transmissions and rear ends and handled like a sack of potatoes. My friend was a cop in NYPD in 1983 and they had Gran Fury patrol cars and they were slow and had the turning radius of a Mack truck. Also, they used a fair amount of fuel and the fuel tank was the size of a go kart. LOL. For a time when Chrysler took over AMC, Kenosha WI was the site of where these were assembled until they were canned for good in the 1989 model year. Whoa Nelley, MOPAR two for one and both are done. Mist Green is no longer mean. "M" body looking kinda shoddy. 3-1-8 used to be great. Torqueflite is soon to be out of sight. That's it, time to quit. Benny is not a fan, both are ready for the trash can. Fast Top took a flop. Lots of junk in the trunk. Going to be flat and that's that. Torsion bar not going very far. Happy Father's Day to all fathers today, I must say. Both will get squished and the Pentastar and "Mostly Old Parts and Rust" faithful are going to be pretty pissed.

One of the Fury's l had was a 67 Sport Fury and one of the few photos l have of vehicles from the past. My mom heard about it on the local swap and shop radio program and I purchased it for 275 dollars in 1991 but was only a 318 but in very good shape, I miss the days when you could actually get good deals on old vehicles.

@@garymckee448My parents had a 1963 Sport Fury with a 318 that my dad bought new before they were married. My dad used to pay to get it serviced and my mom was concerned as it was costing a lot and they were saving for a house. My dad then bought some tools and books and taught himself. After that he fixed everything himself around the house and cars. I always remember him being handy and I picked it up from him at a young age. The Fury was sold around the time I was born.

That reminds me of what I saw in yards back in the 80s. Back then, we'd say 'oh well, a 318'. But now... unfortunately I think we'll see fewer and fewer of these ever get back on the road - every time we go through a boom/bust cycle, it turns over even more and fewer of them come back.

The Fury III was actually near the top of the Plymouth line up. It would be the equivalent of the Ford Galaxie 500, or Chevrolet Impala. The Sport Fury and VIP were higher than the Fury III. The seats were definitely reupholstered. The 8 track is aftermarket. I’d bet that old 318 would fire up if 72,000 is the real mileage.

Those cars had two different versions of the 318. The 1965 car had the A poly 318 and the 1968 car had the LA wedge 318 which was designed to allow its use in the A body cars which were too narrow for the older engine to fit. However the bore and stroke and horsepower ratings were identical.

That vinyl front bench with pull down center armrest was an option in the Fury III for 1968. Competitive cars, such as the Ford Galaxie 500 and Chevrolet Impala did not offer a center armrest seat. I believe the upholstery is original. A friend had a 4 door Fury III and the seat looked the same.

That New Yorker/Fury/Diplomat on the right I guess solid rear bumpers are hard to find. Boy it has nice seats. I agree with you on this one. If I had that car here in NY it would be $2500 firm assuming it ran and moved. That spare might be worth something. I had an old tire like that and a guy gave me stupid money for it because apparently it was correct for the original tires on his car. A Fury III isn't the base model. There was the Fury I and Fury II below that. Above that was the Sport Fury and the VIP. So it's more in the middle. Also that little hood ornament shows the engine displacement if you look at it from where the driver sits. It would say "318" or "383" on it - this looks like a 318. This does seem like a total waste. Not that bad of a car.

Never cared for those 1980's Fifth Avenue models. Always thought the turn signal above the headlights were so ugly.

Not to mention the turn signal lever was cheap and felt like it would break in your hand.

ya know some of these finds that have been sitting for 20 or 30 years may have been part of an estate where the car stopped running years ago and ended up sitting in a garage or barn and the owner for whatever reason never got it fixed then fast forward to today and the owner died and the younger people in their family don't know the potential of a car like this or don't care or maybe can't agree on what to do with it.. or maybe probate ordered it sold fast to settle the estate.. still whatever the reason is sad to see as a lot of these cars you feature are cars I remember from my childhood.

That's true. Many estates, if agreed to by the survivors and executor can be settled in other ways. For instance, my grandparent's will stipulated that the property be sold and the proceeds divided up, because my grandparents figured that everyone had homes by the time of their passing and it would be best to sell the property. However, I was able to buy part of it from my mother and uncle who inherited the property. I just had to buy out the other survivors to lay claim to the land. Worked out fine in the end, but all have to agree on what to do.

Where is this? Does that car still exist? I could use that hood and some of the front end parts. I have a 1968 Plymouth fury 3 it runs very well! But I hear the deer with it a couple years ago and it did nothing to the car itself as far as it running. All the lights still work the AC radiator everything is fine only thing is it kind of crumpled the hood and pushed it in some of the front end grill parts. I would like to fix it and get it back on the road.

I'd take it but N.C. to Texas is just a bit to far. Are you allowed to buy the whole car there. If so, You would think some of your Texas people would save such a clean and whole car. Or maybe their all like that in Texas.

Very sad to see a classic in a junk yard but I'm more upset seeing the magnum wagon next to her got junked, I love mine . I know 8n Cali I see lots of classics in the yard that's because Cali is so fukkin greedy with late fees and penalties in a couple years your vehicle can be as high as $1k in late fees even more for trucks and vans

What kind of yard, after the 2010s, still has old '80s and '60s iron left in it? Here in southwestern CT, 'old' is a 2005 Camry or 2010 Malibu!

Can you still buy it yet? I had a Dumbass attack like this and a more door version of a car like this in Bastrop Texas 1981. At 20 years old totally free car motor shot over heat and cracked both heads and block on 318 3 speed column shift. See this and still kicking myself in the as+
