I use this to help with my ADHD. I find doing and putting away laundry really hard and I get distracted or impatient so it doesn't get done and so I decided that I would save my favorite weekly podcast for laundry day. After months of doing this I'm not as reliant on the podcast because I think the task is just not as big a deal to me anymore. I've kind of proved to myself that I DO have the patience and concentration to get it done.

It was crazy to hear about the study. Over a decade ago, I got into running because I only let myself listen to The Hunger Games while running... I got into running... over the following years even running two marathons.. Definitely a good reminder of how well this has worked for me.

I've been watching your videos since the past couple of years and they have helped me so much! I still find myself struggling with managing my priorities as I'm moving onto the final stage of my degree, while managing work/relationships/health - nothing out of the ordinary and I'm sure this is literally everyone's lives nowadays, but if you're reading this @muchelleb then can I request an updated video on how to manage multiple priorities (I know you've got golden tips in other videos of time management but a refresher on prioritisation would be amazing)! Thanks always for all you do!

For me the addiction is Twitter, Crypto Twitter in particular lol. It's super cool to keep on top of stuff there, but the fragmented nature of information on social media (in general), can leave me quite distracted and sometimes even cause a headache. I'm now using some browser extension to eliminate the newsfeed, which of course I temporarily de-activate here and there. Definitely helps me to focus better when I commit to not check Twitter until the late afternoon. And I've got a reading and podcast list - it's grown way too long by now. So again, I need to learn to set priorities - minimalism is a never ending journey, and I love it :)

I have been doing something similar lately (not really on purpose but out I felt guilty if I didn’t do something proactive while I binged shows) and I found that although it is helpful to get you to start a task I also noticed that it takes me way longer than necessary. If this were about working out it would be fine but folding laundry and doing the dishes took me very long because my brain knew once I was done there was no more media so I would prolong it as much as I could. I don’t really know what to do to to not only be productive but doing so efficiently.

It's interesting that people get addicted to media, I have to push myself to watch TV etc. I've had people suggest to watch or listen to media to help pass the time on boring or unpleasant tasks, and my discovery has been I'm unable to multitask. Can only focus on one thing at a time. If I listen while walking I am I so focused on trying to process what they're saying that I don't notice cars, curbs, or trees. If I want to consume media, I am either watching/listening OR doing a task. I have to stop one to do the other. Either I'm cleaning and completely missing what's going on (or irritated by the distraction and have to turn it off). I can listen to music while working out, but the songs have to be in the same order every time, and the workout has to be pretty much the same. I don't enjoy the repetitiveness but because of the issue with the focus, it's just more doable that way. I'm not really into podcasts, youtube, TV, or books, it takes a lot of energy for me to process information and I'm pretty low on energy these days, so I guess I'm safe from some of it at least. I generally prefer watching something over listening, as I have a hard time visualizing things, and voices sound muddy to me. I pretty much need subtitles or transcripts for everything. It takes a lot of focus for me to process what's being said and I get overwhelmed easily. I think because it takes a while to process and new information is still coming in while I'm still trying to parse the stuff before. I have to pause things a lot. Generally I either have enough willpower to get started, or I don't. I am also terrible at moderating, either I do it or I don't do it. It depends on the willpower I have remaining. I handle cravings a bit differently, for me it was, what is the source of this craving. I find when I crave something, it's a lack of something else. I may crave sugar and realize I haven't been eating enough veggies. I guess that by that point my body is so deficient in nutrients to produce energy that it seeks a quick solution? I dunno. Once I figure it out it usually becomes less urgent feeling and I kinda think of ideas on what to do instead. Like I may go eat some greens and figure out how to get more veggies in my diet on a regular basis.

I like to listen to an audibook when I am cleaning, but also when I am taking a bath or falling asleep to it. I don’t think it’s a harmful habit (to me). But the same cannot be said for binging youtube. I think it’s totally different because with the image, you cannot multitask (with audio only, you can). Therefore limiting media that requires most of your attention is a good idea, when you have a lot of tasks to complete :-)

This is great! I’ve actually been doing this for a few weeks too. I’m addicted to KZbin 😅 and I tell myself I’ll only watch a few videos while having lunch but then I end up stretching my lunch and taking 2 hours to be on KZbin 🤦🏼‍♀️ I also hate doing the dishes so they end up piling up and then I hate it more (we don’t have a dishwasher). So I’ve been telling myself that as soon as I finish eating I can only keep watching KZbin while I do the dishes and it’s really working! I also have a problem with Netflix and now I just don’t watch it anymore unless it’s with my fiancé (like one movie at night) or if I’m really done with everything else and I can truly relax. I used to watch it while eating too and then I couldn’t get back to work 🤦🏼‍♀️ (I’m a freelancer so it’s harder to restrict myself daily with this kind of things)
