Kirk - silly comment perhaps - one of your chores is to add a sea water pump - a) match your current pump - (spare, replacement, commonality) b) buy it now (I know to late) c) use it to pump the water to the boat tank from the ground / back of the van - also use the van water tank for more capacity. Use a y connector with valves at the pump to drain the hose, vacuum breaker at the top We use 45 gallon flat bladders for boondocking (RV living) and rather than carry all that water, just pump it with the SeaFlow pumps.

Good work. You are progressing well for the time you've been at it. PS Lauren is great helping the way she does but she needs to learn to lift with her legs, not with her back. I would suggest that when lifting something like the mast that she slip a rope under it and then pull up on the rope. That way she can keep her back straight and lift with her legs. Keep up the good work. We're sailing south from Maine next fall maybe we'll see you somewhere. Gary and Michelle on s/v Selah

Hi Soulianis, I've been enjoying your explorations and discoveries. Just one little tiny observation on screw types: Although what Kirk is calling flat-head screws are sometimes called by that name, it is less confusing to call them slotted screws, because they have a straight slot which fits the blade of the screwdriver. The term flat-head actually refers to the shape of the head of the screw - it has a flat top and tapers down to the shaft so that it can be countersunk. So slotted screws can be round headed or pan headed as well as flat headed. This may seem pedantic but it could save you from some confusion when ordering hardware.
@SailingSoulianis4 жыл бұрын
Appreciate the explanation. My dad always said to me “get me a Phillips” or “get me flathead” and I would always refer to the screws the same way. Kirk and I have always qualified our “flathead” screws as being the “countersunk” or “rounded” kind. But good to know the correct terms. -Lauren

I changed from a 150/160% headsail to a 110% headsail on my 1973 Alberg 30. Best thing I ever did and I highly recommend it. I also eliminated the roach on my mainsail so no battens are needed, also highly recommend that.

Nice work! You're doing the right thing replacing the hose. I'm glad it was relatively easy to get back on. FYI It's not actually gravity when you siphon water, it's air pressure differential, but who's measuring! Stepping the mast was cool! The clouds were just flying by. Have fun with your boat! :D

The head sail is on a furler....you can reduce the sail to a postage stamp in heavy winds. I found that old blown out headsails work very well especially in light winds acting as a strong drifter. I would keep the new sail as a replacement and use the old guy until he starts tearing ;)

No sure if anyone commented already, but for all those trough hull hoses, it is recommended or mandatory to have two clamps. In case if one fails you have second one. Take a look at your shots, you had two at each end before.

There is a product on the market made for the install of hose ( above & below the water line ) any type of hose. The product is made by “Aeroquip” called hose lube . It can be found on Amazon. This is an excellent product, not only will it help installing a tight hose onto a fitting but once on it will help the hose stay on. It is not an adhesive or a greasy lube. This product is made for Hydraulic industry installing metal fittings on the ends of hydraulic rubber hoses. Best product ever used !!!

On a part that critical I would not scrimp on hose clamps. Constant tension hose clamps made out of good stainless can be had for 15 or $20 a piece. On the other hand, since you've got two threaded connections you could also custom build a hose with screw fittings on both ends which would be much more reliable than any clamp. Never try to save money on something that keeps you afloat.

When you polish aluminum it actually removes the protective coating. When you paint it, anything that can touch air or other metal will corrode faster. The point of contact becomes the sacrifice point for the corrosion. Aircraft that are painted are a nightmare for sacrificial corrosion, unless the paint is perfect. Just an fyi. Some people say paint it to protect it... I say clean the dirt off, leave the oxide layer alone, and don't paint aluminum.

Rubber hose will shrink and harden over time . When this happens the worm gear hose clamp will become loose. I would replace with a constant tension clamp with a spring which would keep this tight. Man is that a design flaw, I would also use Gates hosing in such a critical connection. Stay safe where ever you are these days!

If a cheap hose clamp was meant to seal that centerboard pull hole then the nipple wouldn't be threaded. It rusted out and someone made a quick and dirty 'fix' and then sold it on. It should have solid pipe threaded together all the way up. The tenth corollary to Murphy's Law is that leaks happen in boats when you're asleep.
