Something to consider. I used to work on these machines all the time. I was known as the "Trackmaster" lol at the major ski resort where I worked. I strongly suggest carbide Ice spikes for your track. You can have the mount holes added to the track. They also come with a bolt on version. You only need a few per track but it will prevent any "sideways slide" off an angled icy mountain road. Life savers for sure. Also, I can provide you with a diagram of a emergency "track tear" repair kit tool. This allows you to patch a tear ( i know you have never had one , but you will) that makes a "de-track" or track repair like a Nascar pit stop tire change. Another life saver tool for sure. Glad to provide this info if you get back to me. Thanks. You guys are awesome!!

FYI on the gooseneck blowing tires: If the tongue is too high (as with lifted trucks), weight is taken off of the front axle and transferred to the rear axle, causing blowouts. Make sure the trailer bed is pretty parallel to the road surface.

You are correct about the open differential splitting torque equally. I am an offload instructor for law enforcement and fire departments and we spend a lot of time in our 4x4 Theory portion of the classroom explaining and demonstrating this vehicle dynamic. We do get quite a few people dispute us, but we can prove the theory in the field, which is the best way.
@saltyman37
@saltyman37 Жыл бұрын
I had to think this through again and you're correct. But since both wheels only get the torque that is required to spin the lower traction wheel, instead of wrongfully calling it one wheel drive you could actually call it zero wheel drive if one wheel is completely off the ground.

This is one of the most enjoyable videos that I've seen on Matt's Off Road Recovery. (and I've seen them all). I cannot tell you how heartwarming it is to see the gang involved in so many different things and still working together on shop projects. The side activity of Matt and Jamie out with the girls camping experience was especially wonderful, it made me feel sorry for all the girls who don't get to have such wonderful experiences. I didn't see any of the girls focused on the phone in their hand..... They seemed to be very present. They will all look back fondly on that experience for sure. And while I am super interested in the building of the Bombi, the building of character of those girls will go much farther for making this world a better place. Thanks Matt and Jamie....

Puzzle me this: A Ford 390 cid 335 hp and 427 lb-ft of torque in a '66 Fairlane GT with an open differential on level pavement on a hard takeoff would smoke the right rear tire all the way through first gear, and the left rear would not smoke or even leave a mark on the pavement. Torque is rotational force, so why didn't the left rear tire also smoke? Did it receive an equal amount of torque/rotational force? Also, when I worked at a full service gas station in the late '60's, we did on-the-car wheel balancing with a Hunter system. Front tires would be spun up with an electric motor. On the rear, we would jack up both rear wheels, put a block under one wheel, let the jack down so that that wheel was firmly seated on the block, then put the vehicle in gear and spin up the free wheel. But we only ran the speedometer up to about 35 mph, because that equated to 70 mph on the free spinning wheel because it was receiving all the torque through the differential gears. If a car/truck had a limited-slip differential, the tire on the block would spit the block right out from under it. For those we would move the tire temporarily to the front and use the electric motor. An open differential delivers torque almost equally only if both wheels have equal traction. We also sold a lot of tires, and almost universally, the right rear of a well-used set would have the least amount of tread left. The spider gears in an open differential allow the inside tire to rotate more slowly than the outside tire in a turn, which is, after all, the reason for needing an open differential; to allow for an unequal distribution of torque between the rear wheels depending on driving conditions. If the engineering design is to differentiate the application of torque between the rear wheels depending on driving conditions, an open differential, by design, does not distribute torque equally.

@@bruceb1771 How much torque do you think it takes to free spin a wheel in the air? It's 1-2 ft lbs at best, the wheel on the ground is also receiving 1-2 foot lbs which isn't enough to move the vehicle so it doesn't move. Also when doing a burnout with an open diff the rotational torque from the driveshaft unloads the right side making it have less traction so that is the wheel that spins and once it brakes traction it takes even less torque to spin it so even less torque goes to the left wheel.

A tip if you get stuck somewhere, eg one wheel off on slippery grass: lightly apply the handbrake as you try to move off, this will give the freely spinning wheel something to work against, increasing the torque so the good wheel will also get some torque to move you off

I would put double sets of brake calipers on it so you're doubling your clamping force and spreading out the Heat and friction. just weld another caliper bracket 120° from itself and size your master cylinder accordingly. so you basically have eight sets of brakes 👍
@grantdavis5992
@grantdavis5992 Жыл бұрын
the first set of pads wipe and partially dry giving the second set more friction. In the old days of drum brakes (when I learned to drive) you put your brakes on lightly after going through a deep puddle to be prepared to stop further along. Otherwise you could be in for a surprise. Was really great when diisk front brakes arrived in the 70's. Another major safety improvement was that even if a front bearing failed, the caliper kept the wheel in place. With drums, the only thing keeping the wheel on was the outer wheel bearing which was very small. Now trailers, which rarely (if ever) have disk brakes lose wheels.

Easy way. An open diff will supply equal torque to both wheels up to the limit of traction of the tyre with the least grip. So if one tyre is in the air spinning freely and can handle zero torque, that's exactly what the other side with grip also gets.

I think you might have a problem with steering. The wheels with steering brakes have no direct connection with the tracks. (only friction with the tires on the tracks). Brakes on the driving wheels with the sprockets would be more direct. The driving wheels can overcome the friction on the steering brake wheels. Either have brakes on the driving wheels, or sprockets connecting the braking wheels to give a direct connection to the tracks. Kind regards, John.

I am surprised that you didn't make a new frame for the Bombi since the factory one seems to be that of a riding lawn mower. The rest of your builds always start out with frame mods to make them stronger and this one being just a rectangular box would have been the easiest one yet.... Your community involvement, considering how much you have going on, shows great character and commitment to the world around you.... You are blessed to live in such a beautiful and diverse area that seems to have everything and all at your backdoor that I didn't realise existed all so close together... This was a great video and thanks for sharing a day in the life of Matt and crew.

Hey, I just watched the Robby Layton video with Blue Steel about an hour ago. Right before I watched the new Fab Rats. It's cool to see both sides of the conversation and that both videos were released about the same time as well. I always like to see merging content between my favorite You Tube channels. It's the same with Bike's and Beard's, SxS Blog, Cletus McFarland, Grind Hard... Automotive fabrication that's both educational and entertaining ✊🤘👍 It's so cool how far we've come in the last 20 years because when I was a teenager I used to wake up early on the weekends to watch Off-road 4x4 and Muscle Car on the Powerblock and now I get off off work at a meat packing plant at 1am and can still watch and learn all this cool stuff on my phone of all things! 🤯🥰🤘✊👍

I work at a nordic center. We use Pistenbully and Sprytes which are both tracted snow grooming machines. We use inner tubes in our tires so we dont have to worry about burping tire bead seals. We decided to not use solid or foam filled tires because of the harsher ride quality. Even though we only use ours in the snow. We will stil get flats on occasion.

I have never worked on or operated a Bombi, I have done those things to Thiokol, DeLorean and Tucker snowcats. I would have chosen the 4L60 transmission over the THM 350, for two reasons. First is that the overdrive might come in handy on flat open ground, second the 4L60 has a lower first gear (3.06) compared to the 350 (2.52). You can modify the 4L60 so that the torque converter doesn’t lock up except in overdrive. Just saying… I think what you are doing is great and I enjoy all of your videos. Thank you!

My Lord ! This is one epic edition of Matts of road recovery. Great to see our lovely Lizzie sporting the usual beefy belt buckle, boots and jeans with her lovely locks platted (?) behind her. Really long and thats such a treat for guys like me since the ladies in these parts all have hair cut .....! Damn fine views Matt thanks for the exposure man. Jamie looking right at home there in the reflectorized shades, fine looking lady too man. You're a practical Saint Matt, getting out with the girls and supporting them on the most incredible adventure. Yes, it sure was a little bit freaky getting up the ladder in the rock face despite the safety lanyard. Tom about the hanging LS motors from a chain I agree 100%. In fact I use a length of chain with a piece of 2x4 notched at the ends slightly to keep the chain spread. Better keep checking clearances on these tracks men? On top they tend to flap about a great deal once you put power through the belt or chain (depending what the base is) or when speed increases and the harmonics create an off beat ripple. Great show Matt and team. Your lad is becoming a great addition to the crew now Ae? Welding and all sorts of work. good fellow!👍👍Welding is practice practice practice so you'l never catch up to Lizzie unless she stops!? Which I sincerely hope does not happen! ! Watching for the next series of videos always MORR .

Matt you should have "floater axle spindles" installed on the 9-inch and run 3/4 ton rear hubs so the sprockets will bolt right on and they will reduce axle flex and have two bearings on each sprocket hub, it would also make it easier to do gear changes and axle repairs.

If "BOTH wheels get an equal amount of torque" then the vehicle would not just sit there when one wheel loses traction - but that's exactly what is does! The truth is that because of the way the gearing on an open diffy works, the power gets transfered to the wheel with the LEAST resistance. THIS is why some suggest applying the parking brake when losing traction. The theory is that it adds resistance to the spinning wheel and thus helps to redistribute the power evenly. Matt, if there was power, (torque) evenly at each wheel regardless there would be NO NEED for a locker!
