Man, I have an n55 engine on a 2011 335i, and this is the exact issue I am fixing today. My car ate a belt, and I didn't know why until I replaced the belt and heard some noise. When I visually inspected the belts in motion, I saw a shadow of movement from frayed parts of a belt on that pulley. After I turned the car off, I could see the broken edges of the pulley. I'm new to the n55 world, so KZbin vids like this have been a lifeline.

You can access that pulley and replacement with much less work. I managed to accomplish the belt replacement by jacking front end, only removing the under engine cover and removing one of the air cross pipe torx screws (loosened the other). I pushed belt down into vicinity from the top and placed it on pulleys etc. from underneath, finishing on top when ready for tensioner. I cut the belt I replaced for easier removal from underneath. My belt squeak and subsequent failure was a result of my power steering pump coming loose (the bottom bolt had actually fallen into the under cover). Must have not tightened it sufficiently when replacing oil pan gasket. I previously installed a crank seal pulley guard.

my plastic pulley was damaged from crossmember contact - with standard suspension. I replaced it with exactly the same as this video 👍 PS, on the belt tensioner (beside the T60) there is a hole you push a nail down to hold the tensioner off. A bit safer incase you didn't know about it :)

one comment here-- I used the URO aluminum oil filter cap... it caused major leaking etc. I looked carefully at the threads- the machining was not accurate enough to make a proper seal. That is one park that needs to be plastic.

Great find! I would NEVER have imagined a plastic auxiliary pulley connected to the main drive belt of the engine. I mean seriously; I wonder how much did BMW actually save on that cheap plastic POS part to justify such a crap engineering decision??? Thanks for these upgrade videos. Like most of us I've got plans for port injection, E85, and upgraded turbos but these videos are what i want to do first. I'm currently FBO plus PR coils, OCC, PCV, etc. Getting these finicky brittle plastic parts swapped out with aluminum ones should make the larger swaps less stressful. Any plans for AN lines for the oil cooler or fuel system? I think there is a bracket for the oil filter housing that makes the swap easier. Thanks again.

recently ran over an animal and had this happen. Knew it was a possibility so immediately shut off the car after coming to a stop and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the pulley. It EXPLODED with such force it cut my intercooler to charge pipe boot to shit. Love the car, hate the company. As always...Your DIY's are my go to when I need to do something to my e90 even if I have an idea how to get about doing it because all the small details you include. Great videos.

So I had this issue happen to me and I bought a Vargas crank seal guard and I was fine and it happened again with a small accident. Is there a seal behind the power steering pulley I would have to worry about?

Noticed odd knocking noise the other day and after doing a little research I felt like it was the pump or the pulley. Removed the belt and found that the pulley was loose, even though the bolts were tight. The bolt holes are oblong as if they wore out. Thinking about ordering same part

I was unlucky but lucky. This happend to me, fortunatly nothing got sucked in. The belt snapped of the moment I turned off the engine - I had no idea it happend. Moments after when I started the car, I had no steering - about 30s later the warning "Charging fail" appeared. And that's when I knew the belt had snapped of. The pully was litterly missing the part where the belt can't run over.

I’m guessing that aluminium pulley would crack too, if it hit the subframe while rotating. Perhaps the best solution here involves reducing the chance of the pulley hitting the subframe. So maybe fit a later subframe or different engine mounts.

It wouldn't be impossible but much less likely. Engine mounts are a good bet.

@@VehicularDIY Guess I missed this vid when it came out -- kind of surprised, I view your stuff pretty religiously! Hate to say it, but the aluminum pulley would worry me too. (I mean, not an issue right now I guess, with the engine out! But figured still worth mentioning) I'd probably be more worried about the aluminum pulley *not* cracking -- just constantly hitting the subframe and effing up your PS pump. There's actually a TSB on this issue (I can dig up the #, if anyone's interested). Says the "correct" fix is replacing the subframe. Like you said, the more common fix is notching the subframe in that position. Easy to find -- it will be the only spot on that subframe that's clean, from all the rubbing and hitting. Lucky me, when I had this problem I happened to find a front subframe in practically flawless condition from a 2011 135i (double-checked, exact same BMW part # as the indicated replacement subframe) -- was going to put me out right around $200 shipped and measured for trueness. Figured, what the hell, that's a deal, may as well do it right :) Checked my replaced plastic pulley many times since then; it's been about 3 years and no problems whatsoever. Didn't even have to do new engine mounts or anything. The new subframe model doesn't have a notch -- it's actually formed with a smooth dip around that area. Almost impossible to notice unless you have them side by side.

On a 2010 your subframe would be notched so its very unlikely to happen. That being said the pulley could still fail with heat cycles and time given its plastic but I wouldn't sweat it too much.

Do you think a rubber mallet like a tire stuck on or you think Bad idea? I pulled toward the bump then tried and rocking left to right, North and South as hard as I could pull and not a single mm of movement. Every thing he showed on the video was the same until I went to take the pulley off.

I have a suggestion for your next video. I finally found a robust, well made replacement connector for the piece of garbage plastic connectors being used in BMW Vacuum Lines. These GARBAGE connectors OUTGASS, BECOME BRITTLE, CRACK, LOSE TOLERANCES, in as little as 3 to 4 years of ownership of your new BMW. They are a real pain in the ass because they must be dealt with when you are servicing other parts of the engine. AND THEY WILL BREAK when handling them by you or the mechanic working on the car. They are ONE of the many causes of LEAN CONDITIONS, LIMP MODE, and ADDITIONAL unneccessary COSTS when working on the engine. Do yourself a favor and use these connectors and you will never have to buy new ones again. The best part is you can find these connectors rated for: 1. Very high temperatures, >200 DEGREES FARENHEIT! 2. Rated for HIGH PRESSURE 3. RATED for OIL, GAS & many other corrosive liquids. 4. Are made of TOUGH, ROBUST Plastic or Metal. 5. Much better design mechanism to CONNECT & DISCONNECT. 6. OH AND THE COST!!! How does spending ONCE ONLY ~$25 (never again) for both the bayonet (Male) & receptacle (Female) for each end of the hose/ pipe/ tube ends. 7. They are made with a BARBED end to slide easily and grip securely inside a hose/ pipe/ tube in many many diameters, 2" to 1/4" 8. They also come with a Threaded end in many Thread Pitches, Metric & Standard dimensions. Just a MILLION TIMES better made than the GARBAGE, ORIGINAL, OEM German design. There is only one catch they are ugly as all hell. But, they will out last the car!!! They are Type-E & Type-C Camlock Connectors. Do yourself a favor and replace the garbage that came with the car and never have to replace another connector again. Heat up the plastic hose and remove the OEM connector. Heat the Hose up again and install the camlock connector. Or replace the plastic hose with a High Pressure Direct Injection Hose that will never rot, or crack with your new connector.

Hi there, been watching your channel from time to time as i have an N54 application on an 08 F02, so 740Li, 240 kw, plain stock, no mods whatsoever. Lately i have seen some very very fine glitter in the oil filter housing. No chunks or bits, just glitter. One morning the car had a nasty knocking sound (few months ago). Turned it off and then on again, noise went away. Timing chain in very good condition, sounds perfect in all conditions, no smoke, pulls like a train, etc, engine around 100k miles. Is my engine on its way out with that glitter or is it normal (hearsay) at this age and mileage ?? Thank you for an answer !

Hey I'd get an oil analysis done to see what material is coming up in the oil. That could steer you in the right direction. Typically seeing any flake in the oil is never good.

Looks like aluminum, i mean it's white-silverish, but i havent checked if the magnet draws it. I shall try an oil wash/flush and take it from there. If it continues, things are clear.

I wouldn't think so, its slightly heavier. That concern comes from people that have installed light weight underdrive crank pullies which didn't have the harmonic balancer integrated. So I wouldn't be concerned.

There are a bunch of things to look out for, I have an old video going over some of the common problems. I'd say 2009 or 2010+. If you're looking to make a lot of power I'd go RWD.

It's really pathetic and disgusting that there's so much plastic beep crammed into places where it has no business being. How do those BMW guys sleep at night - a pothole can destroy your engine????!!! However, there's lots to hate about Mustang, Camaro, Genesis, Cadillac, Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, or Audi too. @@VehicularDIY Did you have issues removing yours? I removed the 3 bolts and have tried to push by hand from all angles. Can not move it. Any advice? I should mention my PS pulley has a crack and I suspect it destroyed the belt and shattered it into 100 pieces and threads. Many of the treads were tangled around this pulley but managed to remove them. I am about to take the car to a mechanic... until I saw that it actually comes off by hand. :(

Hey it's all good, I will be upgrading to a large case differential and swapping in a full LSD and changing the axles and installing the proper manual driveshaft along with a diff brace. Hopefully over the next few months. I hope to go with my current setup now just to see what kind of MPH.

It's funny how so many of your video titles sound like click bait. Then I watch, and once again you're right that some stupid $30 part could easily wreck my entire engine. You and FCP Euro are the best sources for repair videos on my E90 I've found. The only possible improvement I could think of is if your descriptions linked to some of your other videos on related work. Like, if you're doing this, it's probably worthwhile to ask if your serpentine belt, pulleys, and tensioners are due soon. Then, if you're already removing the radiator fan for that, is the water pump due, or do you still have original coolant hoses with the plastic fittings instead of the improved Rein ones with aluminum fittings. If you have a 2009 the subframe would be notched so there should be enough clearance where the upgrade to aluminum wouldn't be 100% necessary.

Krikey, the original pulley doesn't look like plastic. Imagine losing your engine as a result of that shit plastic failing! Like you said, it does happen. Btw, have you replaced the plastic "Mickey Mouse" coolant flange or is that a N52/N20 only engine? FCP did a video on a N52 1er where the plastic failed while driving. Literally disintegrated from the inside of the elbow.

Was that the thermostat flange video? I had watched that one actually. 👍🏻 I was actually referring to the other end of that coolant hose that connects up near the oil filter housing, at least on the N52. Flange looks very similar to the thermostat end as you showed a couple of videos back. Thanks for the awesome content! Much appreciated.

@Sammy Phillps have you ever driven a BMW? Nothing about them is cheap. They used plastic parts because in the late 2000s it was believed that that was the best choice of material.
