You have to remember that this is the FIRST X-men movie to come out. All the others follow, or also have back stories

I admit, it's a little odd that they think the makers of this movie planned for stuff that wouldn't show up until movies a decade or more in the future. 😁

This was definitely before the ideas of timelines, cross-references and shared universes made it into these kinds of movies. That all existed in the comics, but this is a time when studios considered 'comic book movies' to be mostly something for children, and a financial risk. They made an effort to 'ground' the comics in reality for this movie, although less so as time went on.

This is the original timeline; Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix are a new timeline after the changes made in Days of Future Past. That's why things are similar but different and characters don't recognize each other.
