I am a 71 yr old retired teacher and have dabbled in painting for years--mostly craft type. Decided to get more serious in my retirement. Have watched hundreds of painter help video's--like yours best! you're a natural teacher.

I like his videos. Got some of the tutorials on his Patreon. I am now in the Evolve painting program, and it's VERY good. (50 yo here). You can look them up, Evolve Artist. A lot of KZbinrs on here have taken the program too (Like Ergo Josh).

A great advice. I switched to photography a few years ago. It helped me to think more about composition because I was not limited by my lack of technic. I think it's the same question in both arts : what do you want to show ? Now I feel more confident to come back to painting but I'm sure I'll continue to take photos. Taking the kind of decisions you're talking about helps me a lot.

Love seeing how the final painting differs from the reference, because of your choices. Simple advice, but very helpful!

Bierstadt does this so well. Enormous mountains with a bunch of tiny detailed towns surrounding them.

Now making an initial couple sketches makes sense. The shape/size idea is really helpful especially for plein air painting. I had no where to start before. Great videos. Thanks

Great video, thinking about structure before you put paint down makes a huge difference. I know I certainly need to think more before I start.

I took your videos and tried to paint, and I was a bit all over the place. I am currently in the Evolve painting course, and it's going MUCH smoother. Some videos focusing in on the base fundamentals and practice of them would be great. Also, you were an actor or something in the past? I could have swore I saw you producing movies or something a decade or so ago.

This is one of my favorites. I pickup the Edgar book on landscape layout. This has been so helpful. Do you have any tips on putting together a limited color pallets?

the rule of 3rds will help you too a lot with this idea because nothing will be entered and obviously there will be shapes that will be bigger to cover the rest of the canvas

Interesting concept: enhancing the artistic impact of the painting by emphasizing or manipulating one quality of the subject matter. I’ll be thinking about this idea for awhile. Hmm. 🧐 thanks for the tip.
@Anonymoi2 жыл бұрын
I’m sure you’ve probably addressed this somewhere, but I have only recently found your channel. I am wondering if you do your thumbnails in oils, too? If so do you prep the paper at all, or does it just not matter since they’re just tiny preliminary studies?
@Anonymoi2 жыл бұрын
Aaand… if I had just watched your video from a couple weeks ago first, I would know that it is oils, and what sketchbook you’re using. But actually, I have looked at that sketchbook before and not been 100% certain if it is protective against oils. It does say for use with all media including oils, but does not specifically state that it is sized for protect against oils.

During this entire video I kept imagining doing this with a portrait instead of a landscape and with a voice over saying "...now I exaggerated his nose this large because ..." LOL Sorry my ADD kicked in... 😁 Though it might be funny trying the technique on a portrait for shits and giggles...
