Very Impressive ... a true novice woodworker ... I've built cabinets, and they fall apart ... this project (RW&B and the flag) close to my heart seems simple enough, with minimal tools, that I think I will attempt it. One question (if you actually look at comments made to old videos) ... why the 1" strips? Couldn't you just trim off the curved edges of the 2x4's and glued them together?

The box store won’t cut anything smaller than 12” from edge and a piece that will end up at least 12” also….so minimum size and cut is 2’ board cut in half according to their guidelines.

Never for one second do anything but focus on your grinder. I'm a very experienced carver and deleted an inch and a half of my thumb on a random kickback. I still use them but a chainsaw isn't as dangerous and dosen't kick back as much. It's going to happen, be ready and be safe. You don't want to be out of commission for 5 months, trust me.

Curious, how many hours would you say you invest into a flag from 2x4 selection to final product. Looks like alot of detail work. Would there be any stick on/glue on star equivalents?

What would be really cool would be if you could do this distressed look on a wavy flag design. I imagine you would need to clamp the wood down to the table, do the carving and sanding, then pull apart distress, stain and put together with a plywood backing.
