Yeah hearing Cord Jefferson say that at the oscars felt so validating, I follow so many cinema online personalities talk about the need for more spread out budgets in movies but actually seeing someone form the system say it out loud, I just hope someone listens and his speech doesn't fall on deaf ears

As an aspiring actor, the points you made, the ideas you presented, and your overall thesis personify precisely what the modern creative needs, trust in their creativity. Profits are good for studios, yes, but every universe, every idea, every big trilogy, and every big story we have now came from creative risk with little to no actual budget but from art and passion from rising creatives. Innovation is needed, and chapters need to close. I hope you got an A on your film class final because everything here is *chefs kiss*

It's so much harder for movies to make money at the box office now that we have streaming. I think the reason that A24 films in particular have been so successful is *because* of the pedigree that they have aspired to thus far. I for one, am always down to go see a movie that i think might be good in theaters, but not many people are nowadays, especially post covid.

The reason why A24 is successful is because they built a cult like following who buy their merchandise Everything in the movie industry is tied to merchandise If you can’t sell it then you are out of luck

Idk, probably the fact that its no longer profitable. Studios created streaming services and therefore destroyed box office revenues, got rid of DVD rentals, and cable tv reruns with ads are no longer a thing. And since everything now releases onto streaming within weeks of release, no one is going to go to the theatre to watch a non-blockbuster. So, back in the day any genre, even a low budget film, could make enormous amounts of money, i mean 200 to 500 (though adjusted for inflation even higher). Flashdance, Kramer v Kramer, Police Academy films, Arthur, Tootsie, An Officer and a Gentleman, Animal House. Romcoms, comedy’s, drama’s, those do not make that much money anymore in the modern industry. They don’t even get anywhere close. And whereas in the old model a 5mil comedy/romance could make 20x its budget, I think this year shows how far off we are. American Fiction struggled to get 23million, Holdovers got 43 mil, Past Lives 38.7, and those are the ones that stand out and some even got a boost from their nomination, most movies go straight to streaming or make as much money as indie films. And once on streaming they can never be as profitable as the sort of IP films and blockbusters consistently are

I'm pretty sure Shrek 7 is gonna be fire, nothing like Jaws 3, or Cars 2, or Teenwolf Too, or Son of The Mask, or Mean Girls 2 (2011) or Megamind 2 or when Spike Lee tried to remake Old Boy 😅

It’s actually very simple to understand why big studios don’t make small budget movies MERCHANDISE Those big budget movies are not movies they are 2h commercials for merchandise For example a marvel movies make 1 billion 40% goes to the theater chain other 60% is to cover the cost of the movie and marketing of the movie + the bonuses for the stars of the movie and executive producers But merchandise is a way more lucrative industry than movies Disney made 1.8B profits from movies But they made 6 billion from merchandise While a a small movie can 10X its budget it is still not profitable because who the hell would buy a Jeffery wright action figure ( I would tbh )

You're a hundred percent right. In modern day studios want to throw hundreds of millions of dollars at all these Marvel movies, when most of the time they're not even that good. The best example I can give you is comparing The Marvels to Reservoir Dogs. The Marvels had a budget of $220 million and has a 5.5 on IMDB. It was all over the place and had one of the most forgettable plots in film history. Then you have Reservoir Dogs which had a budget of $1.2 million and has an 8.3 on IMDB comfortably placing it as the 98th highest rated movie on IMDB. Reservoir Dogs is a brilliant, ORIGINAL story masterfully written and directed by a young Quentin Tarantino, and Reservoir Dogs is even in my personal top 10 of all time. The Marvels feels like something made solely to make money, it's a dumb CGI schlock fest that is painfully unfunny. Whereas Reservoir Dogs feels like something that someone really put time into, something made by someone (Q.T.) who deeply cares for and respect his craft. Anyway that's my rant, I don't know if the studios will ever listen to Mr. Jefferson, but at least there are people like us who truly believe in film as an art form.

I think you pushed too much of your opinion on why indie movies should get more money. Your wording made it just seem like “Superhero movie = bad” and “A24=cinema”. And I understand you didn’t mean to come off like that but the way you talk about the movies feels a bit propagandist and I understand this is still only an opinion piece but I used to talk like this in middle school and I only learned that trying to create distinctions between the movies only made people find me pretentious. You should continue to promote the films you enjoy but you should also be open to understanding the appeal of superhero movies (other than just calling them "safe") so you don’t close those people off. All us film fans feel frustrated nowadays but venting doesn’t fix anything. Sorry if I’m being rude. I’m just offering my 2 cents and just wanted to offer my support through advice.

To clarify, I’m not saying superhero move = bad, I’m saying they take an unjust amount of money from Hollywood to make (and in turn cause less opportunity for up-and-comers), but at the end of the day this is video is just my opinion and the beauty of the world is we are all allowed to have our own opinions! Anyway, thanks for the comment, have a nice day!
@yahellevy
@yahellevy Ай бұрын
@@freyarothery I get your point and I sorta agree but it's not an unjust budget, if anything it's very just because those movies were turning in huge profits for over a decade. I do think that with the recent decline in their quality as well as the recent uprising in good indie movies we will start to see more and more mid-budget movies again

They are safe though…. And you affirm that in your second comment. “They bring in a lot of money so it’s okay” that’s safe.
