These two men had the most wonderful friendship, it was so touching to watch them perform together, the chemistry was palpable. Their final performance was an evening where they sang “a Song for You” and Ray had just told Willie backstage that he didn’t have much time left. Well, Willie was quite shaken by the news, as you can imagine, and Ray sang the song to his friend of many yrs. I can barely keep my composure watching the video. Back in the 1970's, Flip Wilson (the first African American comic with his own prime time network variety show} did a classic routine about Columbus leaving Spain for America. Willie Nelson was a big country artist in the 60's-- 70's, and known for being very cannabis friendly. He and the band lived in the south, and drove to regional performances in a 'Greyhound' style tour bus. One day they were stopped and searched by the police. A band member asked-- "What's your probable cause to search us?" The police said: "A tour bus with the name Willie Nelson on it." 😬
