I'm glad you enjoyed your time here in Missouri. I've lived here most of my life and there are places here people who have spent three entire lives here wouldn't believe are right here in Missouri. You definitely checked out the right general area Edit- the St Francois Mountains are actually some of the oldest mountains on earth, and were apparently the only point above water when the rest of the central U S. was under water. When they were first formed they were most likely reminiscent of the Cascades and over time have been weathered down to what is left today. I spend as much of my free time as I possibly can down there, absolutely gorgeous country around there if you know where to go. 👍👍👍

About the turf- Elephant Rocks is the first place in the country to have an interpetive trail for the blind. The turf tells the person there is a rope to their right. They can then take the rope and follow it to a knot which marks a brail sign they can read.

Hey Tristan, I grew up in Missouri. You did a great job documenting some of the most popular points of interest. As a kid growing up we went to Johnson shut-ins, elephant rocks, and Tom Sauk mountain/reservoir almost every summer. Floating the Black River was a favorite of mine (near Annapolis) there is a cave you can paddle your canoe into. The cave has a natural spring inside it. Also if you like to fish, Montauk State park has a great little trout hatchery. Lots of cool state parks and things to see in Missouri for sure.

Missouri and Arkansas don't get the publicity that western states like Utah and Colorado get, but you can spend a lot of time chillin' out in free campsites and enjoying some beautiful scenery in both of them. Watch out for ticks when the weather gets warmer. It's really nice to see someone who has been to so many magnificent places out West really soaking up and appreciating the Ozarks.

Interesting note: When you were at Johnson's Shut-ins, you were in an area that had a huge flood from a dam failure on top of the mountain beside the parking lot. The electric utility company has a "battery" on that mountain. They built a lake at the top of the mountain and another at the bottom of the mountain. When demand is low they pump water to the top but when demand is high the run water through a pipe to feed a turbine and generate more electricity to feed the grid. It was built back in the forties or fifties (cannot remember details). They had a safety failure one night many years ago and flooded the whole state park with a massive wall of water and had to rebuild most of it. Before that you did not have those fancy walkways at the shut ins and there use to be paths to the top of those cliffs above that lower pool that folks would jump off. I remember going there about fifty five years ago and friends jumping off those into that large pool. I am not a swimmer so I sat in the shallows and watched. I also saw folks Scuba diving in that pool who said it was several hundred feet down to the bottom of that pool as it goes under that cliff a ways. Might be a spring? Just do not remember details. Sorry.

They didn’t want to go in it but being a kid I wanted to. Well…I got LOST in the maze for 20 minutes and couldn’t find my way out 😳 I found myself starting to panic, running through one wooden door after another! I was the only person in the maze too. FINALLY, some other people came through, which I followed lol. They came right through and right out of the maze!! My aunt and uncle said they were starting to get worried 😆 LOL SO WAS I! Catfish eatin’ southerner here. It is one of my favorite fresh water fish, but having eaten walleye when I lived in AZ a few years it is also excellent. Catfish is best eaten with generous amounts of lemon juice squeezed onto it. If lemon not available tartar sauce, maybe cocktail sauce enhances the flavor. The onion and pickles are important as well. Good cole slaw adds a lot to the flavors too. Of course it is required that you wash it down with sweet tea. If that is not available coca-cola is the only allowed substitute. 😋

Catfish is tricky. Farmed catfish tends to be pretty fatty and is therefore more fishy. Wild caught can be really good, but can also be very fishy depending on what the thing had to eat wherever it lived. A good spicy breading helps imho, but I grew up eating fish a bit. That does look like a very beautiful and interesting area and I haven't ever had time to visit it; just traveled through on the way to somewhere else. Now I have offspring living in the south and my parents have passed on so there is a bit more reason to go that direction and ability to take time while traveling, so I will definitely want to see these parks. One more thing; I've been to a Devil's Gulch in South Dakota that is pretty cool and has a Jesse James legend attached. It's at the town of Garretson and there's a nearby state park called Palisades that is a completely bizarre compact rocky canyon suddenly appearing in a prairie landscape. Neither place would be a destination imo, but a really cool side trip in the Sioux Falls area.

In one of your earlier videos in this series, you mentioned that one problem with minivans is that they sit low to the ground. You can get a 3-inch lift kit for certain models. As for fish 🐟 you might want to try salmon, tuna steak, or shark as their texture is more meat-like.
@SUVRVing2 жыл бұрын
I would never put a lift on a minivan for the same reason I've never put a lift on my RAV4. Those vehicles, their frames, etc. are just not made for that kind of thing. I've had salmon lots of times. It's OK but I wouldn't choose to eat it if I had other options 😁

@@SUVRVing well it not being yours. But they do have lift's especially made for every different car/truck. And I'm am very sure if they were especially manufactured for that vehicle, the manufacturer warranties it. It's just like anything else companies specialize in.

Usually fish that is breaded/fried can be good to any palate. Worst case scenario you can smother it in tartar sauce or if you lack that, ketchup works in a pinch. I never ate fish growing up, but I eat it now for health benefits. At least once a week is healthy from a study I read, sometimes I have more. Tilapia is good fish usually. Salmon of course. At home it's tuna since I don't know jack about cooking fish.

If you ever find yourself in the southern Missouri Ozarks there's a place you need to put on your bucket list. The place is called Greer Mill Spring located new the eleven point River. It is the most amazing place and it has become my spiritual place. Two large Springs create a significant stream that flows for a little over a mile to the eleven point River. It courses over many big boulders and small Ledges and is incredibly beautiful. You really need to put it on your bucket list because it is so special. There is a well-worn path of about a mile to get to it. You won't be sorry you sought it out

It's pretty exhilarating in those eastern deciduous forests to be there in the spring when all those leaf bare trees suddenly bring forth green leaves all at once.

Newly subscribed. Binge watching old episodes. Isn’t purdy much all of Missouri WEST of the Mississippi? 🤔

What an amazing area of the country. I appreciate your explanation of the various geological features, and the arial footage is stunning. Elephant Rocks and the Shut-ins are particularly beautiful Thank you for another well made travel journal. P.S. I'm right there with you on eating fish. :-)

Highest point east of the Mississippi 4:40 ? Am I mistaken or weren't you west of the Mississippi? Either way I chuckled out loud when you stood on the rock & exclaimed "I did it".

Slip of the tongue. I meant to say "in the East." Thanks for watching!

I look forward to your visit to Mt. Mitchell, the highest point EAST of the Mississippi. Come to North Carolina soon. You would love the Blue Ridge Parkway, Grandfather Mountain, Roan Mountain (in June when the rhododendron are in bloom!) Table Rock,, Cherokee, and, of course, Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

Gorgeous waterfall. I was surprised that the high point was as low as it was. I thought it would be a few thousand feet higher. That shut in was special as well. Nice scenery.

Surprisingly Missouri has one of the lowest high points at only 1772 ft above sea level.

I love fish, but not catfish... to me, catfish is VERY fishy.... I really love fresh fish from coastal states - Grouper in Florida, Salmon in Washington state/Oregon.... :) The white fish, like Grouper, tends to be very less 'fishy' tasting and is usually SO good. :)

This past weekend I hiked in Devil's Den state park in western Arkansas, south of Fayetteville and north of Ft. Smith, AR. A very cool, compact state park.

Been to Devil's Postpile. Been to Devil's Slide Paradise Valley Livingston to Gardiner, MT. Giant red streak, according to newest Roadside Geology of MT is Triassic Chugwater Formation (pp 193). Same book (pp. 208) says same red exposure in Pryor Mountains, Red Dome, SE of Bridger. Brilliant red all around on Pryor Mountain Road. There is another red streak along the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway in Wyoming (not sure on geology). Just went to SW of the town of Silver Star, MT to Hells Canyon Road/ Guard Station/ Fishing Access Site. This is the southeasternmost extent of the Highland Mountains with similar rocks that you saw around Butte/Ringing Rocks. All fun granitic boulders to scramble, very fun campsite, very few people. East of the town of Silver Star, MT is a fishing access site at Jefferson River.

If you get back to that area, visit Mill Stream Gardens, Silver Mines, Hughes Mountain, Lower Rock Creek (Cathedral Canyon), Castor Shut-Ins, Buford Mountain, and camp at Marble Creek. Lots to do in that small section of Missouri.

For people who aren't fond of fish, getting Cajun blackened style usually does the trick, especially with catfish!

Fairly pretty there. I admit my Western bias being born out here, and my love of red sandstone. What this area lacks in elevation changes it makes up for in pretty trees and vegetation.

If you make it further east I believe Coopers Rock State forest just outside of Morgantown, WA would be a good fit for this channel. Here is a description from the website: "Established in 1936, Coopers Rock State Forest boasts some of the most iconic views in Almost Heaven. Located just off I-68, about 13 miles from Morgantown, the park features canyon overlooks, historical sites, picnic shelters, 50 miles of hiking and biking trails, sandstone cliffs for climbing and bouldering, cross-country ski terrain, a lake perfect for reeling in trout and a nearby river for rafting." Love the channel and look forward to every adventure!
