The talent is actually a really solid card outside of the combo. I play this deck as a Golgari midrange deck, that also just happens to have an “oops I win” combo in there. I don’t play pillage the bog because it is so slow. Also, most of the planeswalkers aren’t good against aggro decks so I only play 2 copies of Vraska for the combo. I play 4 talents because going t2 bat, t3 talent plus level up is a great way to race aggro. The talent also helps outsize Lightning Strike and Cut Down.

Personally I run a version with no Vraska, low to the ground deck and only play the 3 mana walkers. TBH, if you Ultimate a Wren or Liliana you're probably winning that game anyway.

@@jasonslade6259 I had a game where my opponent ult’ed Liliana twice against me and I still won. Her ult is back breaking but not necessarily game winning. It helped that my opponent always paired my dreadknight with a small number of lands so I just drew out of it.

The golgari style of this combo is ok, probably more consistent but I run abzan super friends with this combo with heaped harvest and feed the cycle to ramp and removal+ramp. Then you drop a vraska and win, or a kaya and make oppo life hell, or drop an ashiok and exile a bunch of stuff. It works and planes walkers are troublesome for the meta right now

The reason you don't want to draw multiple Talents against monored is that you're not playing Phyrexian Fleshgorger. That big lifelinking body with ward that grows by two or four power each turn has won me most of my games against red with this deck.

Here's a youthful mistake, I used to shoplift packs all the time when I was a kid. My dad had just died, I was young and stupid and angry. Ended up giving my whole collection away to a kid who never had cards and wanted to play. I'm hoping that somewhat atones for my bad actions. I think people are packing to much enchantment removal for innkeeper. I like temp lock down to remove Bandits Talent to keep discard decks from having their biggest card draw engine. Get lost is a popular removal spell. Wish there was a better way to remove artifacts that didnt result in having a dead card in any non artifact match ups because Urabrasks forge feels so safe for Red decks.

Yeah, noncreature artifacts that cost more than 2 mana (so lockdown doesn't remove them) basically just have to eat a counterspell if I want them answered as UW Control. I think if I really wanted to maindeck an answer to them, I would probably run Bovine Intervention, but definitely it's a much worse card than Get Lost or even Destroy Evil. In the sideboard, Disenchant or Requisition Raid or Loran of the Third Path are all decent choices - and there's also Cease/Desist or Urza's Sylex if you want to sweep them.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure the way vraska and Inkeeper's talet work, you can just pay the 5 mana without paying the phyrexian cost (2 life) and still get enough loyalty to ultimate her. Love the vids CGB

I believe with the Phyrexian mana cost she still ultimates since it takes the 6 normally, innkeepers doubles it to 12, then the Phyrexian mana reduces it to 10z. Still able to ult it

You have to pay the mana or life. Also it would enter with only 8 loyalty counters on it which is 1 less than the 9 required to give the poison counters

Both Innkeeper's Talent and compleated are replacement effects, replacing the same event (entering the battlefield), so you can order them however you want. Vraska can enter with either 8 or 10 counters. Arena will default to 10 (but you can uncheck the "auto order replacement effects" option if you want to do this manually).

I always love seeing the CGB take on a popular deck. The refinements are usually really interesting, even if it is just tuning to the meta. Also, golgari, so can't go wrong with this deck.

Had the funniest game with a variation of this deck, playing Phyrexian Flashgorger. Against mono blue control, they clearly dominates the game, foiling me at every turn, but I manage to sneak some damage early. They play some flier with power equals number of instants/sorceries in the graveyard (don't remember the name). I manage to put a fleshgorger down and get it up to 6/6...they attack, I attack, get their total life to 6. Then they get the flier to 20 something, it's clear they will win, tons of mana...on their turn they start flexing pumping the flier, I stay to the bitter end, letting them have their fun, encouraging them with emotes, then last thing they cast a return to hand spell on the effing Fleshgorger, AND THEY PAY THE WARD COST...they die...I die laughing :) (there's a chance I would have made the same mistake when the greed rush kicked in, assuming the ward cost was mana)

I think in the current meta, you can MD Choking Miasma or similar to wipe the board, since killing creatures one by one is very ineffective, and something like Gix Command is too slow.

53:25 i was in 5th grade. My mom raised me basically alone and worked a lot to put me there so she did not have money to buy mtg cards. Because he was looking for outs to lethal them next turn and the knight had vigilance so it could block. Plus, there's no blink or bounce in convoke so once the recruiter has entered and done it's thing it's really just a 2/2.

I've been running disfigure instead of cut down for a week or so. Sometimes it's better, sometimes it's worse. I haven't decided what I prefer.

The problem with disfigure is that it’s “situational”. If your opponent has a sheoldred and your blocking her say with a 3/3 and then cast disfigure, for sure it helps, especially if you have first attack. It’s also helpful against monored to take out the two creatures that deal damage equal to their power. However, if you only need to take out an opponent’s creature before combat or before damage is dealt and that creature has 4+ toughness, like haughty djinn in early game, cut down is way more useful. In old standard I would have gone for cut down 100% because of raffine and similar cards, but now to be honest it’s closer to 50/50.

The initial brewed combo is toxic wincon, but later versions (including this one) add more planeswalkers to capitalize on the max loyalty from inkeeper's talent. CGB's version has the midrange tools like Dreaknight and the control pieces if the game goes long. I really like this take, as it seems more versatile than trying to beeline to the combo; which, as CGB points out, is vulnerable to aggro if you get flooded with extra inkeeper's talents early.
