I do recognize that I pronounced Michael Stich's name a little off. I appreciate all the comments letting me know that. A lapse of judgment on my and I'll make sure to correct that for future videos, I appreciate all the fans of the channel and look forward to bringing you guys the best tennis content!

Don‘t worry. I studied in the US and wasn‘t at all annoyed by your americanized version of the German „ch“. It‘s just a phonetic sound English speakers don‘t use 👍🏽

I have to highly agree with you, particularly the 1996 Wimbledon QF, if Sampras had won that match Sampras probably would have a record the big 3 couldn't match~ 8 straight 👑 in Wimbledon!

Jaime Yzaga, although had a losing record against Sampras (3-4) beat him twice at the U.S. Open. The two faced each other four times: ‘88, ‘89, ‘94, and ‘95. I remember Sampras saying in an interview that he was ready to “kick his ass” prior to a rematch at the Open. That was a lot of emotion from Sampras.

Thanks for the video- and glad you made it. Another proove of his talent came in 1996. Tomas Muster had won allmost anything on clay in 1995 and 1996 until roland Garros. But the man who beat Muster in 1996 RG: Yep, Stich

Sampras said in his book that he believed Stich did not enjoy life at the top or being in the limelight too much. Which prevented him from going further. Stich made a French Open final, one of the few serve volleyers of that era to do it.

What both McEnroe and Edberg achieved by reaching 1984 and 1989 RG finals respectively was even more impressive and they both were just set away from winning it...Stich just got routined in straight tight sets...

Stich defeated my idol Becker in his only GS victory, one of the most painful loss that I remember for Boris…he had beaten Edberg in SF and I read that he saved MP against Alexander Volkov with a net cord point in that road wich he said was a Herculean work…but otherwise, stayed in the top for few years only and that’s the reason only tennis fans remember him

One of Stich's world record at the time and during this very tournament: He did beat 2 number 1! He defeated Edberg in the semis who was the actual number 1 and the sweede's loss pushed Boris ahead at the number one spot , Boris who also lost to Stich in the final this time. This speaks volume of Stich's raw talent.

kinda makes sense. Both had massive serves and prodigious all court games, they could play at the back or serve and volley you off the court. Both also had similar careers in that they were injury plagued and probably could have achieved a bit more. But when they were good, those two were nigh unbeatable.

Yes, Pete always had challenging games against Sitch who, in my opinion, had superior serves (both 1st and 2nd). Due to the variety of styles employed in the game, 90s matchups were excellent to watch. There was more than one way to win the matches, unlike today where everyone basically pounds the ball as hard as they can 8 ft behind the baseline.

Richard Krajicek who has a 6-4 h2h against Sampras concluded: "Sampras's backhand is his weak spot, though he can hit some passing shots when the opponent goes to the net. As long as you target his backhand continuously with good shots, he's defence will eventually collapse."

Great video and analysis. In a way it shows how competitive and tough tennis was in 90s Sampras’s era. There were so many talent great players, e.g. Michael stich, Richard krajeck, Wayne Ferreira, Pete Korda, Agassi, courier, Becker, chang, kurten, bruguera, ivanesevic and so on… yet Pete Sampras still winning 14 majors including 7 Wimbledon.. incredible achievement. By simply comparison, anyone could tell Federer even Djokovic eras are much weaker without much challenges

Apart from the fact that we are talking about different era's with different playing styles keep in mind that Safin and Hewitt destroyed Sampras in major finals at 19 years old. Even Federer beat Sampras at Wimbledon at the age of 19. Now I'm not implying that Sampras was at his absolute best in those matches but nonetheless Federer and Djokovic's era weren't weak at all.

Richard Krajicek's record against Sampras is even more impressive: 6 - 4! Apparently, Sampras had trouble playing against similar players, i.e. with a big, serve-volley game. I am also reminded of the amazing, clear (3 set) victory of Philippoussis against Sampras at the 1996 Australian Open.

Guys and gals relax, even Jim Courier himself when talking to Michael Stich himself during their commentary duos actually uses the phonetic nickname which is pronounced like "Stitch". He doesn't seem to mind, it's obviously one of those "Ah, what are you gonna do" nicknames. Cheers!

I always thought Stich played the game beautifully, gracefully and intelligently, that's before Federer came along, in the 90s he's the one player at the time truly has the talent to be great, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be... not for the skinny chicken legged man... The horrible ankle twisted injury shorten his career!

Sampras has match points on that world team cup on his serve . Head to head should he even , I think stich is up by one . Previous comments about Kraicjek are correct , only player to really have bothered Pete . Let’s keep in mind that Sampras had a superior head to head against all his major rivals , unlike Federer . Let’s also not forget he had beaten every single French open player on clay in the 90s . So point being he truly dominated an era of champions spanning two generations really . Todays champions are not even 50% of what Sampras was had history & time will show that he was the most dominant and untouchable

80s gen players like Connors McEnroe Lendl Wilander Edberg Becker were all pretty much burnout and in some cases semi-retired by 90-91 while Sampras era really started in 93-94. Only Stich Krajicek and Ivanisevic were the fast court specialists of Sampras era (Henman had almost zero power, Rusedski was a 1d pure server, Rafter was a very late bloomer and nothing special really outside of hc). Agassi's best surface was rebound ace of the AO. Sampras had a losing record vs Krajicek and faced him and Stich a total of all of two times at Wimbledon. Sampras dominated only the 90s gen really. Ivanisevic on grass and Agassi on hard and carpet were the only guys *still in their primes* that he faced consistently. Late 90s He had loads of trouble vs a teenaged Hewitt who he said had a better return than Agassi. He lost a Queens to him and got bageled once too. He did NOT dominate "two generations" certainly. All of Federer Nadal and Djokovic could be said to have dominated two generations. Taking into account the slowed down surfaces I consider Federer to be the greatest since the turn of the millennium who would have thrived in any era on true grass. Even Laver singled out Fed viz Nadal and Djokovic during the 2019 Wimbledon. Overall I would think Laver Borg Sampras and Federer are the four for goat.

Grand Slam Coup and World Team Cup were not ATP Tournaments. The only signifikant win was in Frankfurt 1993 and it was very close until the 4th set. Pete had beaten him at the most important encounter with Stich beeing the defending champion in Wimbledon 1992. Sampras schooled Stich, breaking him 4 times. So in my book it's not the "nightmare", just a great talent named Stich who clearly underperformed in his career and should have won way more Slams.
