It's obvious they don't make it themselves. You have to make a pattern you cut out and sew together. A pattern you measure before making it.... I think they ordered doll and clothes from different suppliers.

+1 confirming this, this entire shop is something I looked into before and everything on it is purchased from cheap chinese producers that they then markup (this includes the custom items, you can get a doll like this made overseas for much less than 400) and the rest are either dropshipped or resold items they didn’t make. this entire thing is a massive scam.

And usually people who do stuff like this have simple templates (like a basic T-shirt/ shorts) to measure the size of the fabric to the right proportions for the different available sizes and base extras off of that base. It's risky not to since you might make clothing wrong way to many times before it fits right.

Ok I'm very well versed in this because I took part in like over 30 group orders in chinese communities for custom plushies and I can sew myself. This is a chinese doll style for sure. 20cm is the the most common size. I'm not surprised the clothes factory made it in 20cm. 30cm is really rare and considered a "kpop doll" size, not a chinese doll size. #2, you can order get these "one-off" dolls from china (about $100-$200 depending). Usually they do offer custom clothes but chinese girls know to go to an actual "doll clothes" factory to have them made as the skill level/quality is so much higher. This seller is def buying a one-off doll from these chinese factories, and probably got the clothes done in a clothes factory. By default 70% of the doll clothes in china are made for 20cm, 25% for 15cm and 5% for 10cm dolls though 10cm is rapidly gaining popularity these days. Since the clothes factory and the doll (body) are different factories, anything above 20cm would not have "global" base pattern unlike 20cm. If you buy 20cm from one factory, it should fit your random 20cm chinese doll like 99.999% of the time cos they use roughly the same dimensions. The clothes factory probably just randomly drafted one for 30cm based on guesstimate cos it's that rare lol..... Also it's a really basic ass jumpsuit without custom embroidery (for the patches etc, this costs more) so the factory def already got a pattern for it hence why they got the first 20cm one done like almost immediately. lol Usually an artist will draw the color-accurate sketch and send it to the factory, the factory's "designer" (that's what they call the embroidery software expert) will make a color-accurate digital embroidery file (closest thread color they have) based on your artwork. The fact that you don't even have to send a sketch to buy a doll tells me that this seller is also using a "default template" face. This makes the doll even cheaper cos the factory already has these "base faces" digital files in their library and just changes the eye color and turn on and off the beard lol. That's probably why it was blue initially lmao. Typically it DOES take about 6 months to get it done if you're only ordering one. Hence why we hold group orders for these and they go as large as 500pcs and up for popular artists/characters. This bumps you up in the queue and you can get it in about 3 months. This also drops the price down to a whooping $30 per doll! Crazy right. In this 3 months it takes a LOT of back and forth, voting within the group, making tweaks to the eyes shape, even the color of the thread used for the eyeballs and if you buy so many, the factory usually lets you make 2-3 changes for free (digitally). Each time they have to actually sew/make the plush (head at least), then ship it to the group leader for real life inspection. Each draft plushie costs an extra like $50-100 depending on how big of a change you made so we also vote on whether we want to even make the draft or not. Longest one I waited for was 8 months because the group leader chose to make the clothes in the same factory as the doll and there were soooo many changes to be made. Yes clothes also need drafts. TLDR: Seller is def outsourcing to china and earning about $200 profit based on my estimation. lol

i also got some dolls from these chinese communities (I still have some in production becuz it DOES take time) and in discord servers dedicated to collecting chinese doll style I got a 10 cm doll almost $30 from a group order of a character i like. I also bought a 20cm that's around $50 from a fellow doll collector (also another character). I'm not incredibly well versed in this like @KyraDiere is because I order them through a GMM (proxy basically). usually there are listings on weidian (chinese app) and announcements about it on weibo (w/ characters from various fandoms. there's a lot of surprising characters I see lol) I never ordered custom dolls myself, but @KyraDiere is on point with their info from what I've experienced and heard myself dolls are definitely an expensive hobby, it gets pretty pricey when converting currency and stuff (fortunately, my proxy can convert currency for anything on weidian/taobao, so it benefits everyone's wallets) finding a good proxy or doll GO person who is good at communicating with the buyers is the way to go. I wouldn't rely on platforms like etsy for custom dolls tbh...

I recently got into Chinese factory dolls and the look of this one was really obvious to me. Though it looks like some factories advertise their sample making on etsy (I wouldnt say thats ideal but when I was looking at dolls a lot of these 1 off dolls by factories were up on etsy). Hope your comment gets bumped up more. It's a very informative comment too, I learned a bit here. (Plus if anyone is interested in making this style themselves, Check out piyopicco who sells a body pattern and has doll and eye embroidery tutorials on youtube! another maker on Japanese website BOOTH, named ota-made, sells doll patterns in this style as well.) My goal is to learn how to embroidery nicely then sew a doll myself - yippee.

30cm tall chinese dolls are very popular nowadays, but the popular versions are 20cm doll size + longer legs = 30cm tall dolls. So it's really not surprising that the doll clothing manufacturer probably misunderstood and did a "30cm tall" doll outfit instead (which is literally just 20cm clothing plus longer leg portions), but since the jumpsuit's leg portions are open-ended and 30cm tall dolls fit as well, they didn't bother to extend the leg portions further down (probably due to a lot of customized 30cm tall dolls having huge fanned out paws for legs instead of slim, straight legs). These kinds of things require the customer, aka that etsy seller, to communicate with the manufacturer, which they obviously didn't.

7:10 they’ve sent a fake tracking number and marked it shipped before it’s done to try and keep their shop up to standard for the “top seller” qualifications, certain boxes need to be ticked for a seller to get verified as a top seller and be recommended by the Etsy algorithm and you don’t qualify if either your orders dispatch late or you don’t provide tracking when completing and order. This store is trying to make it look like they’re doing both by marking orders complete and putting in fake tracking. Needs to be reported

The problem is Etsy doesn’t have a place to report these stores. You can open a case after talking to the seller and that’s it. And with the way the case system works you are put into a chat log with the seller and Etsy & you’re only given a very short response option to say what’s wrong and it has to be about the quality of the product. Etsy’s customer support is ASS & it took way to bunch haggling with the seller to get my money back

I took one look at the doll style and knew off the bat that it's a aliexpress custom doll. And to be fair, doing a SINGLE custom doll, even through a supplier from Aliexpress, can be expensive. Esp if the detailing on the doll and/clothes is a large amount... Etsy has long since fallen from my good graces. It's long since become another Ebay (minus the auction) and it's disgusting. It used to be for artist and letting artist thrive. Now, they are buried under resellers and scammers.

Plush artist here- 400 is reasonable for a custom plush, though prices vary a lot depending on the artist's skill level, complexity, etc etc. personally i dont think the mark plush is worth that much, especially with the style of the doll and that joke of an outfit. this is an embarrassment. Never in my life would i make a plush with an outfit that only fits over the doll's foot. I send sketch previews but it's very important to update the customer regularly and correct what changes the customer requests, as long as it's within reason. ^^' i know some plush artists work with others on their orders, but i make them on my own so i dont have experience there.

A couple things: The plush being from a 3rd party would also make the price make sense. The premade ones are a lot less than the custom ones. When ordering from alibaba they charge you based on how much stock you order. Also, if they're ordering from a third party, ofc they wouldn't want to fix anything, because they already recieved the product from alibaba, and they would have to go through several more months of manufacturing and shipping, and they would have to pay out of their cut of the money to fix the mistake.

to be honest when i saw this my first thought is that they are a chinese supplier with an etsy store pretending to be a small artist: would explain the language barrier and i swear they communicate in a way very typical of the overseas manus i talk with. ive made plushies with chinese suppliers before and spent $400 on a sample, but the actual plushes were about $25 when put into actual production. a lot of work goes into that first while i still think theyre in the wrong, it also shows a miscommunication of expectations on the buyers v sellers side: these factories get metric tons of orders and one order of one plush is not prioritised. this person came in thinking they were talking to an independent artist (especially with that first message) and not a factory with thousands and thousands of items being made a day. for example, the blue eyes are probably just a consequence of the designer pumping out many designs a day and not having time to research the character. for this type of doll a manufacturer would probably not like taking a photo of a person, and would rather art they can reference off of. obviously they should have changed it after it was pointed out though.

Something similar happened to me but it was with our wedding invitations. The shop stated being in the US; mid-production a lot of strange delays happened and I figured out the invites were being made in Turkey. So the "designer" I hired wasn't even supervising anything - a big problem for something as delicate as custom paper invitations! Consequently, a lot of prints were wrong, messy, we even had to pay for customs (!!) but I'm confident the shop lost money remaking everything until it met the promised quality. Lucky for them, we did get a lot of compliments with our final custom invitations

7:10 I have to jump in as an Etsy seller! 😭🙏 The shipping and Star Seller guidelines can be a nightmare. Etsy requires tracking numbers for all physical products, which is tricky for custom items or those shipped as letters. I run a sticker shop and sometimes get big orders, but with a 3-day processing time, I have to provide a tracking number by then, or Etsy flags me. The tracking for letters is useless, though-it just starts a timer that falsely says it’s delivered after three days, confusing customers who think their package has arrived when it hasn’t. 😭

I’m gonna go off on a limb and say that this is probably a drop shipper. I have seen many like this for anime styled fursuits as well. They are likely using multiple manufacturers rather than this being the work of a single company, and I say this because I have manufactured dolls like this and know the process for making prototypes. For starters 400$ is wayyyy overpriced. Mine were 90$ for a 15cm sized doll prototype. They are upping the priced and selling other companies work through Etsy and taking the extra cash.

Hugely incorrect...Each manufacture varies depending on order size. On top of huge shipping costs, they charge about $80-200 (depending on manufactures) just for ONE sample. (This is NOT in defense of the shop, only defense of the work that it takes real artists to make custom physical one-off items like this) If it was handmade by an individual plush artist, I don't think the price is excessive, but of course that is my HCOL western country pov. If you have ever made one-off plushies of this level of finish (e.g. not mass produced), you know it takes a lot of time, physical labor, and materials. Custom embroidery has to be designed, digitized, and tested for each individual customer. But, yes, due to the "low" price and that these shops tend to have multiple types of items (eg plushies and clay figures), my suspicion is that these shops also outsource. It would be nice if that was communicated up front so people know what they're getting.

I bought a Noibat (Pokemon) plush off Etsy a few months ago, super excited to add another handmade plush to my collection, only to find out after I bought it and received it that the seller is known for stealing designs/patterns and the Noibat plush I bought is a lesser-quality ripoff of another artist. Honestly I don't blame them for not understanding when they got asked if they were ok with 20cm clothes. The way it was formulated when asked was misleading, if the plushie is 30cm ofc the clothes are going to be smaller since they don't cover the whole plushie so if you don't say straight up "clothes fit for a 20cm plushie" not everyone is going to understand it like that. They should've also precised that it meant that the clothes wouldn't fit because there's no way a customer who's only seen pictures of what you make can do the mental calculation of whether it will fit or not just like that without having seen it. Oh and speaking of having seen it, THEY SHOULD'VE SENT A PICTURE OF IT TO MAKE SURE THEY UNDERSTOOD WHAT THAT MEANT. So yeah I don't think the customer is in the wrong AT ALL on that point.

Its very obvious the person is just earning middle man money now after seeing it done like that. I strongly suggest loverplier to just look elsewhere to get custom cloths for the doll. Least the eyes is changed to the right color and the doll itself looks fine :) EVEN if they had not missed the communication part where they ok-ed the 20cm doll cloths for the doll, when they got it, at the end of the day it would have not fit as well. Cus as u can see at the end when the seller shipped a clothing they say "is" 30cm doll's doll, it came out as a 20cm doll cloths and did not fit AGAIN. So either way, loverplier would have gotten a wrong sized to begin with. So the fact that they "ok-ed a 20cm doll cloths" in my eyes does not matter cus it would have been wrong anyways since the first shipment.

Plush maker here, the price, in spite of how expensive it might sound, is very typical of a full custom plush work. This shop is definitely a scam (falsely advertised). A plush artist knows what they're doing, can make edits and shows wips when updating customers. At least that should be part of the commission work you're taking. Small tip to avoid scams: most of us have social medias! Research if the maker shows WIPS online or the process, has an online presence etc. (Smaller, less detailed work can cost way less by the way 🙂)

However, it feels like this is a company who fucks over some customers, but makes some happy to keep up their image. Also, as an Etsy shopper, the ONLY time I’ve ever received a tracking number before an order was completed was in a situation where life stuff got in the way on my end, and they printed the label before I was able to respond with commission details. Etsy will penalize sellers for not shipping on time, but you generally should not give out fake tracking numbers. Just set your turn around time far in advance.
