This is likely the most used audio effect. It powers every filter, flanger, phaser, and reverb tool. With the all-pass filter, you can do it all. With a center frequency to apply a phase shift, it's possible to recreate and create new effects from scratch.

When 5.2 dropped the all-pass filters was the rabbit hole I dived down. I was completely unaware of what exactly they did and their applications. I was sitting in your Bitwig discord posting pictures of the two waveforms just moving in phase and asking "what does it all mean?" haha. I ended up watching hours of Eurorack /modular synth videos using hardware all pass modules to get the low down on them and a bunch of use case scenarios of what this simple device can do. This little unassuming knob is probably the most glanced over update of 5.2, it's really great to have. Your video is a nice 25 minutes of demystifying the device in practical terms for some of it's uses in Bitwig. Great video Mr. Polarity!

Hasn't the grid always contained an all-pass module? Or am I misunderstanding
@MasterSteros
@MasterSteros Ай бұрын
@@thejayce The grid already had a module called all-pass, but it wasn't a real all-pass filter, it was just a short delay. It's close enough to an all-pass to be used to diffuse reverbs, but it can't really be used for the kinds of phase modulation and filter math that an actual all-pass can. The old all-pass has been renamed to "all-pass delay" to make room for the new, real all-pass

Yeah, at the very end of the "What's New" page for 5.2, it says "And for programming synth structures, the... simple All-pass might help you out." lol way to bury the lead!

This is exactly what I always wanted 🤗 An all-pass that is not delay based. They managed to sneak one in without me noticing. Was still discovering the compressor.

yep classic digital phaser contains N numbers of allpas filters called a pole, most of the algorithmic reverb as well builded form allpass filters, in digital domain filter it's delay. i think you can't do feedback without delay you need at least one sample delay for feedback loop

Depends, if you mean group delay then the statement is wrong. Urs Heckman of UHE wrote about it in a blogpost long time ago. Also the free virtual analog filter e-book is extremely valueable in learning how all those filters work. Just google it and get the latest pdf from kvraudio

Really good stuff. I was just working on a very similar concept for a video, but this is far better organized than anything I could do! Something I discovered while researching is that there is a notion of a 2nd order allpass filter which has a bandwidth parameter. I wonder if Bitwig could eventually add an allpass w/ a bandwidth parameter (or maybe theres a way to construct it out of these 1st order filters). I built a little phaser device so I might still record a video and show it off.

19:36 there actually is another way to do feedback in the grid, though i only used it to make some harsh glitchy sounding stuff so i dont know how possible it is to tame, or what the actual feedback latency is. i just used a modulator out pointing into a value knob that eventually makes its way back into the same modulator out

Hello Polarity. Here's something else that's interesting to me. I saw how one KZbinr made a linear filter using an all pass filter of a special equalizer. He did a regular cut, 24 dB, which has a 180-degree phase reversal. And at the same place he added an all pass, which reversed the phase by 180 degrees, but. The distortion itself from the all pass filter was inverted. And it turned out that the all pass returned to its place all the phase distortions introduced by the cutting filter. Is it possible to repeat this in a grid?

Why not have a community based on educating others with what you know rather than just these short youtube videos? These are cool and I'm sure help you but I don't know if they are really helping us. Why not have something that we can purchase or monthly subscribe to that will teach us about synthesis, production or something that can help us get where we want to go? This is info-tainment. The patreon seems sort of pointless to me. "You like me, so give me money." Why not, "I have knowledge and skills and can teach them to you?" I think the most beneficial part about your Patreon is the top tier where you can get questions answered or tracks reviewed. Maybe the Patreon offers more and you're just not explaining in the tier's description? I just believe that you have more to offer that could benefit us in a systematic way.

That content and more already exists. If you go back through history, whatever topic you are interested in is covered in depth somewhere. As far as Patreon, paying out of the kindness of your heart for whatever reason is the whole point. In the case of Polarity, he's been putting these videos out and running community spaces for years full time. I'd say that is a pretty significant contribution that is worth throwing in a few bucks for. But the well understood contract with Patreon is that people pay because they see the overall value, not that there is a contractual obligation for an exchange of goods, implied or otherwise. If you want that, then there are Bitwig courses and one on one training that you can pay for explicitly. I'm really not seeing a problem here, especially given the wealth of content that is out here that is literally free.

What you mean? He IS teaching and sharing knowledge all the time. I dont even use bitwig, and I still always tune in for his knowledge and to watch him teach how to do cool stuff in the grid. (Ps...I do own bitwig, I just almost never use it. I got it because i thought it'd be cool for it's clip features to lay down ideas with (and to play in the grid sandbox lol). But as cool as it is, its kinda more for technical synthesis type guys. Im just a songwriter so it just doesn't cater to my own needs. I mainly use my daws just for audio recording/editing/mixing after ive already created the basic song idea...and bitwig isn't geared very well for use in that aspect. Otherwise I'd probably use it.

@EricJohnson-fh8zj Precisely. I'm getting really tired of people who have contributed absolutely nothing to the community piling on others that do. As you say, this *is* Education in its purest form. I don't understand how people can come on here, a channel where you literally get deep technical content for free and start whining that it isn't their idea of content. Fine, then go and make that content instead of spoiling it for everyone else who enjoys being here. The Reddit community has been overrun by trolls, bots and entitled people with no manners. I'm getting totally sick of it. There are a few people who are going out of their way to cause trouble and stir up problems where there aren't any, and it is really starting to be an issue. I really hope something changes because I'm not liking where this is going.
