With snow and sub freezing temperatures on the horizon, we spend the last warm day gathering firewood from our 9.5 acre wooded homestead. Will we have enough to heat our barndominium shop house through a harsh north Idaho winter? #woodheat #tamarack #hardwork

My wife and I used to supply 90% of our winter heat with "free" firewood as well. When one considers the time, gas, oil, equipment and effort involved, it is really rather "expensive". The good thing was there was never a need for a gym membership! Like others have suggested...get a log splitter asap and your years of being able to continue this will be greatly enhanced.

I'm sure you've heard the saying about firewood warming you more than once. Cutting1, splitting2, stacking3 and then burning4. It's very satisfying at the end of the day knowing you've done a hard day's work and making sure you won't freeze through winter. No one was hurt and no equipment was damaged, it was a great day. Liz is a beast! Love the decals. I started keeping my firewood in IBC cages last year, super convenient. With the tractor loader forks, I can move a cage into the sun to dry or bring a dry one into the garage as needed. Have tarps over them to keep them dry. Stole the idea from the Morgan’s, I’m sure they stole it from someone else!

We have been heating our home with a wood burner for about 45 plus years, I'm here to tell you, there is nothing free about it! It's hard intensive back breaking labor.... And then there is the gas and oils, the time to re-sharpen blades or replacing blades, and there there is the gas and oils into the pick up truck to haul said wood, and time to chop saw, split load unload stacking, no there is absolutely nothing free about it! BUT once you have your winters supply in, no you don't have a heating bill coming in except the fans off the wood burner. You can not put a price tag on having a home heated with wood, it is so amazing, I don't think I could ever go with out a wood stove, I would freeze LOL... Sometimes we might have to "heat the outside" by opening doors and windows, that's happened more than once :-) But if one was to pair fair labor costs and all the costs I mentioned I'm not entirely sure it's very much cheaper, but absolutely not free~

Three rows of sixteen inch long makes for four foot high by eight feet high is a cord anywhere. I cut firewood for many years and it was good hard work... depending on how hard it split and toss to the road. One crazy time, I found some really nice wood above the road but a very long toss to the road so my resourceful mind was in overdrive. I stretched a cable really tight from a tree next to where the wood was at and then down the hill to a tree close on side of road and got it pretty tight. I split the wood in chunks my cable would handle and was high enough off the ground to staple big staples in the sides of the blocks of wood. I left just enough room on the staple to let it slide on the cable and then turn them loose to slide down to the road, hit the tree and knock the staple out so it could go on the truck .... getting wood that way is not easy and sometimes even harder than just tossing it but there were times it worked great and watching the blocks of wood hit that tree at the bottom and come loose from the cable was also more fun to get wood out. I got the idea from splitting shake bolts for the cedar mills and we used small staples on the split clean cedar boards and would move over two cords a day every day.... It got your milk by weeks end an you needed a day to go pick up staples off the ground. We would go with sacks full of staples and when we ran out of staples, we knew our day was over. Finding a spot to make a cable high enough to make it all work was the biggest challenge. Winter is here as well in alaska an for a good while was below zero by ten and more degrees... so far I think and I am done with it that cold as my old bones don't like it. Take care kids

Should make it easier for all those “non pros” when felling trees, the “notch” should ALWAYS be 1/3 the diameter of the tree you’re falling and the back cut should be parallel with the notch BUT “atleast” 1 1/2” - 2” higher than the bottom cut of the notch! And you should never have to cut all the way through to the notch. If done properly the tree will “hinge” and fall before the cut is all the way through. A “proper” notch and back cut will always make falling trees SO MUCH easier. Always notch the side the tree is leaning to! If you need the tree to fall in another direction than the lean, you’ll NEED pull ropes and/or wedges and possibly more experienced cut techniques. For instance if you are more experienced you can adjust the back cut by leaving more “meat” on the side in the direction you want the tree to fall (if there are power lines, house, buildings, etc. that must be avoided and you aren’t very experienced, the best way to control the direction of fall for safety reasons is a pull rope). DO NOT take short cuts in those dangerous situations!! NOTE: if it is within the power line easement t or ROW call the power company and they will send contractors to call it safely at no charge. If it’s outside the right of way or easement call and they may send contractors to top it below the wires free of charge. Either way if you call they will send someone to inspect it either way free of charge, and they will advise you. DO NOT take the chance of dropping trees on live power lines…!! Live power lines on the ground are NOTHING to play around with or risk!
