I, too, am not a fan of hand saws. Came from trying to use traditional saws as a kid and failing miserably in trying to make a straight cut. However, I purchased a pull saw recently and I was amazed at the difference it makes. I did use a straight edge to make sure the cut was accurate, but the effort was so little, I became a big fan. I wish it were the saw in the video, because I like the handle a lot. I think it will be my next hand saw purchase.

Thanks for the comment. I just got back from Home Depot with a 2x4 and a 2x6. I needed to break them down, so I cut them while they were still part-way in my SUV, with the pull saw. Amazing. So easy, and much easier than trying to use a circular saw. (If I had a cordless circular saw, that would be different.) It's amazing how quickly our tastes can change, right? 😄

I just bought the traditional Japanese straight handled Irwin pull saw. I do alot of small pieces for picture frames. The beautiful aspect is that if you start the cut on the opposite side you started on and pull down it takes no energy at all to cut. It won't replace a 12 in 80 tooth mitre saw cut but I seem to use it all the time.

Pull saws are great. One technique to have a more stable cutting experience is to use the pull action to your advantage. You were cutting using a western saw approach, from the top. With a western saw, that would push the workpiece into the workmate, giving a more stable cut. With a pull saw, get lower, and pull down below the workpiece, that too will put the workpiece into the workmate, instead of pulling up like you were causing a very shakey cut.

Something that I find helpful, and I hope I can describe this well.... I try to saw across my scribe/mark on the wood first. Lightly, at first, to basically scratch the wood. Then enough to create a solid groove across the top. I then adjust my angle of cut to work from the edge, doing a more typical "cross cut" motion. But, now, I have a light "kerf" in the top of the wood to follow. I find that helps me keep my cut straighter...at least in one plane. holding the saw straiight up and down is something I hope you'll be doing a video on soon.... :-)

Hi, if you come around the other side of your workmate and support that with your spare hand then the workmate and the timber you are cutting won’t move. This makes for an easier and better cut, you only need to support the other price of timber just before it falls.

Basically it's a Japanese saw. Many people think that only those ones are called Japanese saw which have a long handle, but that's not what makes a saw a Japanese saw. Rather the flexible blade and the sharp, small teeth arranged in two lines, slightly angled backwards so it's very easy to push and prepare the real cut when pulling without putting much effort into it. The real advantage is not that you don't get tired of sawing but that you can concentrate on holding it straight much easier. Compared to the table saw, the advantage is that you can use it on Sunday too, without your neighbors sticking it up to your ass :)

I have a japanese pull saw, that cuts on the pullstroke. its a swivel type whereby the blade retracts into the handle by pushing a button, you can also angle the blade too, its much better and easier to use than conventional saws, it doesnt jam, it cuts better, and because you push on the work when using freehand it cuts quicker, and you dont get the jumping when the saw jams.,well worth getting one..

Because I'm an electronics person, I'm destined to be newbie woodworker my entire life (there's always something new to learn which is awesome) but one thing I've always continued to do, ever since my high school woodwork teacher demonstrated is to hold the saw with the index finger pointing down the line of cut (and to use the full length of teeth as well as use the weight of the saw without added force). I don't know if any of that applies to a pull-saw. I've never used one. I certainly want to buy one of those flush-cutting saws. They look very handy.

I'm sure that saw is nice, but a few observations. Since you appear to be right handed, you should try clamping your finished work piece on your left ... and having the waste cut to your right. That way your left hand and body weight would be over the work aiding in stabilty ... doing so also facilitates keeping the pencil line to the left of the saw kerf, while letting the waste simply drop away from the cut. Sometimes if I'm concerned about tear out from the drop running into the finished piece, I'll under cut the bottom (a bit) before completing the cut, but most times I'll just exercise caution at the end of the cut, sometimes reaching over to catch the drop.

Looks like a GREAT saw Dan, the only problem I see with a pull saw like that one is that you can't see your scribe line due to the sawdust being "pulled" out from the cut. Yes you can blow them away but I would rather concentrate on the line and not the sawdust. Like Adrian Mack says, with a pull saw, could you start from the front and work your way to the back??

Not with a pull saw. If you get the full blown Japanese saws they have round handles. I do agree however that with a western saw the correct technique is your trigger finger along the saw, stable body and move your arm in a plane so that wrist, elbow an shoulder move in line as taught to me by my grandfather who was a master craftsman. The last thing is to never force a western saw. Just move it and let the teeth do the work. It's when you force it , it all goes pear shaped at times literally. I have both western saws and a us brand "shark" japanese saws and enjoy both. Depends what I am doing. Just my opinion of course.

I saw (heh) a video about it and it works perfectly: push your index finger's tip against the blade right above the teeth to hold it in place and straight and the first move with the saw should be a pushing away from yourself, without pushing it down. Then the first pull should be a light pull too. Over time, you can push it a bit more and more down but not much, it will cut the wood even without putting much effort into it. And also, at first, cut the far edge first, then level it out slowly from pull to pull. At first probably you won't succeed in holding it perfectly vertical but a little practice helps.

I like to be able to sharpen, but the cheap disposable saws can be good too, and if you use it really occasionally, it may be a better deal. I have an Irwin handsaw as well - not that one, but more of a regular panel saw - and it works well. I grab it often when I need to do something quick. Part of me hates throwing it out and wasting it though when it’s no longer sharp. I have considered filing/grinding the whole blade flat and putting new teeth in it - not sure how this would work though.

@@MD-en3zm I totally understand. It *is* a waste to just throw it away. It's not the money so much as it is the idea. I guess the other alternative is to spend money on a saw that can be sharpened, assuming they make such things.

They´re pretty rare now. I think Paul Sellers found a few cheap ones and did some videos on them on his channel.

@@MD-en3zm Interesting. Well, at least we can still buy good table saw blades that can be resharpened. I wouldn't sharpen one myself, of course - I'd send it in. But you get my point, I suspect. Pun wasn't originally intended, but I'll own up to it. 😄

Maybe you’re right that you shouldn’t be using a handsaw. 😁 just kidding. 👍

Only problem is anything with the Irwin brand on it is rubbish

I haven't found that to be the case, but I totally understand having bad experiences with specific brands.

Looks like a nice saw. However, all they did was copy a Japanese saw, so nothing new there...........

Most of your video you say "I" but at the end you're like "check it out and let US know". US who? Your mice? Your kids? Your sponsors? Frankly this smells like a setup piece for Irwin. I have 6 hand saws and 2 circulars and 1 table and I'd never buy this flimsy p.o.c. Thanks for making it clear you can be bought. *unsubscribe*

LOL. "Us" means all of us who read the comments. No, I don't get paid by Irwin. Yes, I make a very small percentage from Amazon if you buy from my link, as do almost all KZbinrs. Sorry to see you go. But if you haven't learned that I'm completely honest in what I say and do by now, my guess is that you haven't watched many of my videos anyway.
