Makes sense… some days I can’t miss other days I can’t make a 4 footer… this tip is why… when I’m on I don’t think about straight back and thru. When I struggle I think about straight back and thru… makes perfect sense and I am sure I will be making more pars and less bogeys and doubles!!! Thank you sir!!!

Jim Powell speaking. I do what you are teaching. However, I add one thing. When I set my putter I bring the inside of my elbows in so they just lightly touch my sides. That really helps me to be consistent with my stroke.

HI Todd, I had the worst putting of my life two days ago (10 3-putt greens), came home and checked out putting videos on KZbin. I'm a fan of yours (I bought your book) and saw the video where you talked about Cory Pavin and the tip he gave you about turning your left hand under the grip. I also have a balance issue (82 y/o) and tend to drift forward while putting and had been using a straight back and through stroke. I practiced a bit before today's round and 3-putted the 1st hole. I ended up with 5 1-putt greens, 2 birdies and 3 doubles. Show an 83 and my buddies couldn't get over how well I putted. Thanks for that great tip Wayne Kivi Cape Cod

@apaulmcdonough2170

There are Two Reasons for a Right (Push) Miss. 1) Actually being Aimed more to the Right than you believe you are. This could be Your own Aiming, or having the Face Aimed more to the Right than you are "seeing". 2) Using a Putter that has Too MUCH Toe Flow. Or a Combination of these two. IF You are Aimed Correctly a Putter with less Toe Flow, even possibly a Face Balanced Putter will bring the Ball towards the Left (Pull)

One thing that you haven’t highlighted is that your shoulders are moving together with your arms and as they all move in one piece this keeps everything linked up and enables you to swing the putter smoothly and online.

This is really helpful, Todd. What really counts is that the putter face is flat and facing directly towards the target at the moment of contact with the ball. It makes a lot of sense to work with, rather than against, the way your body works.

The consistency comes in the Tempo. Once you are More than about 6 Feet away from the Hole, *the elapsed time from the Start of the takeaway and then back to Impact should be as close as possible to the same amount of time no matter the Length of the Putt.* As Putts get Longer, the "Backswing" does Lengthen AND so the Clubhead Speed must also increase to produce the necessary Rolling Distances.

An easy way to practice with the putter is to take an alignment rod, or even an iron, and hold it under both arms just above both elbows and pin it to your chest. Take your putting stance and rock the shoulders back and forth and you will see the natural arc of the putting stroke. Do that for a minute or two on a regular basis and it also teaches you what square shoulders parallel to your intended line looks like and the minor adjustments needed in your grip for the putter face to form a right angle to the alignment rod. Give it a try…it works.

Todd, thanks for another instruction, however I do not totally agree, from what I see your hand position, right hand (wrist) below the left hand (wrist) lead to a lowering of right shoulder. I have found, that my grip, where palms are face to face, wrists even, index finger pointing down along the shaft and other fingers interlocking, creates a triangle with shoulders level. This grip lets me swing the putter in straight line, simply by rocking the shoulders. My eyes are over the ball and arms are virtually straight.

I do disagree somewhat. For putts 6' and under you do not need to swing on an arc. If you have a face-balanced putter (which supports the straight back motion), the backswing distance is only a foot or less and does not require manipulation of any kind. I pick my intended line, draw the putter straight back a foot or less, pause while looking ahead of the ball at the intended line (from Dave Stockton) and then swing straight down that line. Pausing promotes accelerating thru the putt. I seldom miss using this method. I also putt cross-handed which reduces wrist motion. On longer lag-type putts, then arc putting and some wrist action is useful. My two cents from one of your experienced golfers. Chicago suburbs.

If you let your lead knee bend as u come back you can still stay on the straight line and my arm stay the same as my putter dose just like your pizza drill and I never not have a flat putt. As if I don't I push with changing the line is that still wrong

I don't have the live view thing, but a "pop" style putting (very short back & very short thru) stroke, which I find extremely useful on very fast greens, seems pretty much a straight line stoke to me. This is not to say an arcing stroke is not valid, but rather that there is more than 1 way to skin a cat.

With a "POP" Stroke any Arc in the Stroke will be less noticeable due to the Shorter Length of the Stroke and Faster Swing Speed of the Putter Head.

Combination of the 3. Great question. Most golfers think it is just shoulders, not correct. I cover this in great detail in my book The Bad Lie if you would like to continue learning. You can find it on Amazon here www.badliegolfbook.com/

I putted best when I concentrated on keeping my body and head extremely still. I would resist temptation to look up quickly. Keeping head and body still,,,listening for ball to go in.. this is number one fundamental.! ⛳

You can putt straight back and straight through (without manipulation as the video demonstrates) IF your only movement is shoulder rocking in a vertical plane. I am not saying that this is a better way to putt, but the video is simply demonstrating how NOT to putt straight back/straight through.

The shoulders are part of the movement, however not the main driver of the movement IMO. It is a combination of arms, shoulders and hands for the perfect mix. Make sense?

You don’t do a proper test! When you attempt straight back and through, you use all hands and arms, but we all know that we form a triangle with hands,arms and shoulders. When you hold steady hands and arms, rocking shoulders, the path of the club is much straighter.

This is a bunch of bull. He is making exaggerated moves deliberately. He's not moving his shoulders up and down. Anyone can make swings do what they want to.

It’s not bull. He’s exaggerating it a little, sure but he’s right to a point. On short putts, straight back and through is easy. Longer putts are much harder to keep it straight. A small arc for me is more natural and it works. I guess it’s what works for the individual.

The amount of misinformation here is staggering. First the whole speech and "demonstration" of what a "straight back-straight through" swing looks like 🤦🏼‍♂ and then the revelation when you bring in the pizza slice and realize "oh, wait, you CAN have the arc straight..." but with an 'on the spot' "explanation" that the putter would have to be vertical... Dave Pelz showed what a straight stroke is decades ago: your hands need to be under your shoulders and then you rock your shoulders in your forward leaning position. The hands-below-the-shoulders part is the vertical component you need. The fact that the putter leans on an angle is just a constant offset that has no impact on stroke shape as long as the hands are directly under the shoulders (creating that vertical plane). This doesn't mean that a straight stroke is best for everyone, but the level of misinformation here just disqualifies the rest of the content. Sorry for the harsh feedback, but I guess it's a case of "we don't know what we don't know".
@USGOLFTVshow
@USGOLFTVshow 10 ай бұрын
Appreciate your honest feedback, thanks. Have you ever tried to "rock" your shoulders without moving your spine or head? In our experience it is almost impossible for the average golfer. Inevitably they rotate their head down and forward on the backstroke and up and back on the forward stroke, end result, the low point of the arc is in constant movement and impact conditions are impossible to control.
@AndreeMarkefors
@AndreeMarkefors 10 ай бұрын
@@USGOLFTVshow I realise my first response was a bit harsh, but you still took the time to quickly reply to my feedback constructively. 👍🏻 I think I would have appreciated the fundamental mechanical baseline for a putting stroke which I'd say is: we're leaning over on an angle. If the hands are outside of our shoulders' vertical plane (straight vertical line from shoulders to ground) then you'll get a clear arc where the hands are moving inside to in. This is easy to test. If the hands are inside of the vertical shoulder plane, we'll get an out to out "reversed arc". Hands below shoulders means "straight". Now, we're not contortionists and I understand that the range of straight-straight motion is limited. But some might opt for it and I think it's valid. If you're looking at face balanced putters, for example, they are often marketed towards this category of golfers. Putting on an arc is equally valid-I think it's a matter of what's more intuitive and repeatable. I felt the notion of a straight stroke was too quickly dismissed.
