I personally knew a young teenager back in the 1980's who lost his arm above the elbow by a moving train and had to have the rest of it amputated at the shoulder as it was so totally mangled the doctors couldn't save any of it. All because he was messing around playing fun and games and was jumping on and off moving trains in a switching yard. His parents had to not only pay thousands of dollars for all the medical treatments he had to undergo afterward but also had to pay thousands of dollars more for all the court fees as well because the Rail-Road's lawyer's as well as the judge deemed it no fault on the part of the Rail-Road. Yes. That young man learned a lesson the hard way. Not a good way to learn a lesson.

Whenever I go out trainspotting I always make sure I stand behind the yellow line and if spotting from the lineside always make sure I am behind any exclusion zone or fencing. I hope this incident reminds others not to try this as it is not only expressly dangerous to yourself but others too, obviously.

I appreciate all the railfans that reported and disapprove of what this guy was doing. As a locomotive engineer and a railroader this is concerning that this guy is interfering with mainline switches. This can cause derailments and serious accidents to the train crew and community. For us working on the railroad it requires authority and verbal instructions/permission from the dispatcher to even throw that mainline dual control switch- without such authority and permission that would be a serious violation for us so to see this guy do something so blatant and reckless really gets me angry. He's dealing with people's lives and safety. Stay off railroad property trespasser!! Again, i really appreciate all you rail fans who reported and disapprove of this kind of activity!

The boys’ behaviour is down-right reckless and sabotage, but let’s all remember that the railway company allows this with the lack, thereof, any infrastructure to prevent this from happening in the future to prevent members of the general public from endangering themselves and / or others (i.e: railway staff; P-Way, S&T’s, drivers, etc., etc.). I watched an NS intermodal train come to a stop right outside of my hotel room in Gainesville, VA a few days ago. Most of the train had passed me and just the last few cars were sitting there. About 5 minutes passed, I'm not too sure what they were waiting on but the train started moving again, and let me tell you that slack was something serious. Several quiet bangs that turned into progressively louder bangs followed by a HUGE bang as the cars in front of me lurched forward, going from standing still to at least 3 mph in a split second. Seeing that...there's no way in hell I'd be standing anywhere near a train that's sitting idle because you have absolutely no clue when it's gonna start moving again...and if you're in a bad spot you will have exactly ZERO time to get out of the way. The whole last part of this video with him getting on and off the train sitting there was crazy.

If you do graffiti you know how easy it is to get close tho these and I've seen plenty of unlocked switches and this is something that is just common no matter how many rules and regulations there are you will find unlocked switches and easy access to trains. Also most of these boxes and switches are in somewhat desolate areas so many workers don't bother to lock boxes or even do proper theft prevention/safety prevention checks because there's nothing out there and that's where people like him are able to manipulate the system and cause a crash or something. He's not the only problem, everyone is the problem, the rail workers, the rail company, the train company, the city, everyone is a problem here.

We wonder why railroad workers often scowl, harass or try to get railfans to move on. Aside from not wanting to be photographed and/or videoed on their jobs. I know what it means and how bad this is but it was a closed down line I personally checked 3 times, the tracks were dug up at a point. all crossings were either disabled or removed, and I checked online sources on said tracks. I knew what I was doing, I confirmed that what I was doing was safe, and I made sure that the rail equipment was locked, and secure. it was in a abandoned drop off area behind a abandoned business. no train ran on that track for years upon years. Word to the Buffs...If your are standing on Ballast you are 99% likely trespassing on railroad property. That is why crews usually despise Buffs.

I stumbled upon this video by chance, and found it interesting. Imagine how many people who never saw Sebastian’s original video stumbled upon this video also. With just a little education, unfortunately some people can be extremely dangerous.

Trespassing was not the problem here and isn't even a crime here in Germany, the problem is dangerous interference with railway operations.

And that's why the manual control for the switch or the trackside equipment boxes need to be locked with padlock.

I'm more concerned about the lack of security that would have prevented a child from being able to do this than the actions of this boy. While he definitely needs to be disciplined for his behavior, I would hold the railway more liable than this child if an accident were to have occurred. I've managed information systems for businesses and I had more security for our network closets and server rooms than they seem to have on their rail equipment. And I didn't have near the budget they have and no one's life was at risk. The lack of responsibility for the safety of their workers and for the general public by the railway is sheer negligence and far more criminal than this young boy's actions. People often complain about "big government" and all the "regulations" the government imposes, but videos like this demonstrate WHY the government keeps poking its nose in corporate business - otherwise, corporations are routinely lax in their safety and security measures.

Just think if he had put the locomotive in motion and jumped off of it . Someone did that one night in Big Springs Texas causing an unmanned set of locomotives to have to be switched into a siding where a cut of cars were set out causing a hell of a mess and millions of dollars damages .

One can clearly hear from his voice that there's a developmental issue with the young man. His physical age and his mental age don't match up. Young lad needs assistance in life because despite knowing how switches work he's absolutely not aware of the consequences of doing what he's doing. Charging him with fines or other punitive actions will not teach him anything. He needs a guide and a personal care taker for him to learn life around him.

When I used to do track side photography near an industrial site. I would always ask the conductor or E.I.C. that was on site next to switch permission to be there to take photos. And because I asked they said yes as long as I paid attention to the switching crew and moved out of the way when the train started getting close.

once upon a time some young boys got into a train box and found some torpedoes placing them all in a line near the main crossing in town. the resulting series of explosions from the 10:15 highballing through town was somewhat chaotic . just another Friday night in a small town.

I think railroads (at least class 1's) have been doing away with older locks (Adlake, Keline, etc) for this exact reason and going to more normal locks (same for signal equipment). So more than likely it was either left unlocked (which would definitely be a "called on the carpet" moment for someone on the RR) or he cut it (which would be a "knock knock" moment for him). And since it was a power switch controlled by a dispatcher, it would definitely show up on their computer screen as being thrown back and forth (maybe show as "local control") . There's a video on here where a maintainer explains how power switches work (and also shows the type of lock RR's are using now). Plus they are interlocked with the signal system, and if a train is within a certain distance of it an electric lock will prevent it from being thrown. And it'd show up on the PTC display of any train approaching it. Not to mention the door to the switch heater control box only being secured with only a cotter pin (those are DS controlled too so i'm sure it would've showed up as "snow melter on" on the DS computer screen).
