A friend of mine techs for a gentleman who has two dumbles. He said (this is from his boss) that every single dumble was made custom for the buyer. I can't remember whether he said his boss was the original owner or not, but the detailed info he had on the process of getting a dumble back then makes me think so. He said the guy who ran dumble would invite you over to his shop (he used the word garage) and that based on your feedback from playing the initial base model amp he would modify it to your liking. He made a point of saying to me that even dumbles with the same model names on them don't necessarily sound the same to others. When I asked him how big of a difference we were talking he said "not small, not massive". I can't remember if he said this whole "custom tailored amp" thing was a realtime process like with a breadboard circuit in the guys garage or if he sent you off with the amp a few times until you said you were fully satisfied with it. Anyways, I'm not saying this is all factual, there could be some info that was lost in translation but I trust him and what he was saying.

How do you figure? Dumble will be remembered. He built amp designs himself from the ground up. Dumble didn't take someone else's circuits, add a few things, and rename them like this guy.
@alexmoore5832
@alexmoore5832 8 ай бұрын
@@J.C... by no means am I discounting the genius of Alexander Dumble, but Taylor has a masters' understanding of what components at which stages create "the sound". If you watch a few more of his interviews and try one of his amps, I think you'll agree he's got something special.
@kodykindhart5644
@kodykindhart5644 8 ай бұрын
That exactly how dumble got his start and his “sound” A lot of dumble designs are very similar to existing ones In reality he figured out a ss rectifying stage greatly increased the touch sensitivity and too away the “3d” sound of the fender amps he was working from You clearly don’t understand circuit design
@kodykindhart5644
@kodykindhart5644 8 ай бұрын
So basically dumble too the tube out of the rectifier stage and changed it for a solid state one Also used a really efficient speaker Like a jbl or ev12l
@kodykindhart5644
@kodykindhart5644 8 ай бұрын
Go play a nice new solid state amp like a quilter or old one like a Roland jc and feel how it reacts to your picking… how “instant “ the sound is across the frequency spectrum as well Tube amps with transformers need to get the ac power into dc type power and rectify this problem with the rectifier circuit Either tube or solid state type rectifier circuits exist Tube rectifier seem to have more “3d” sound and a little softer attack that “sags” a bit On really high wattage amps when cranked up you hear this as oomph or “chug” it basically overloads the circuit because the transformer and tube rectifier take time to get that voltage up to level With a solid state rectifier it happens faster Or some shit like that I only know enough to get me in trouble 🤣🤣

Companies like Amplified Nation, Fuchs and Bludotone are doing such a fine job of capturing the Dumble tone that I wouldn't fuss about being able to afford a real Dumble. Also, they have fixed some of the flaws inherent in Dumbles. Now, if you are a tone afficionado, I would recommend trying to track down a Dumble just to try one. I got to try one at a shop in Newark forty years ago and was very impressed, but I didn't think it was the amp for me. Before that, I had never even heard of Dumbles, so I came to it with zero expectations. It was an Overdrive Special. Fine sounding amp.

If you want to stay clean at higher volume, add more power tubes and bigger irons. Pre amp tubes/valves are wired as cathode followers in order to prevent guitar signal loss when passing through a tone stack. Back in the 70s Status Quo went high power transistor amps and nobody noticed any difference!

I saw Robbin Ford in a club with maybe less than 2 dozen people. For years, I would tell every guitar player I knew about the most incredible tone I had ever heard from a guitar! The only way I can describe it is as he hit his notes, the pick attack would be initially clean, but then would start to bloom into this sweetest, slightly overdriven tone as they started to decay. I can’t sufficiently describe … one would have to hear it.

Pretty sure Kenny Wayne owns more Dumbles than anyone. All of his main amps are Dumbles. They look like Fenders on the outside but they're all Dumble inside. I think he has 11 or 12 total. He and Howard were quite close. These are all amps that Howard built for Kenny personally. One of his Fender heads he has on tour currently, for example, has a Dumble clean channel on one side and a Marshall-style Dumble circuit on the other channel. Kenny's cleans sound almost just like this amp. I hear Kenny Wayne all in this. If you know Dumbles, you know that's Kenny's sound as soon as you hear it.

SRV first used a Dumble in Jackson Brown's studio, a bass amp. The demos made there ended up being the first album. Not long after SRV's first interview in Guitar Player Magazine, they interviewed Alexander Dumble and he went on and on about the "proximity effect" of components and how that's why his "Dumbleized" Fenders could never sound just like a Dumble; not enough room to do everything he wanted. Love the overdrive sound here, never heard that done before. I'd use that as a single channel amp with an 250 overdrive pedal for lead, like a Marshall or Vox. I had an OD Special clone; couldn't use it that way or reconcile the two channels, one of a few primitive aspects I encountered. Great video (but I'd like to have heard a 335 on it)!

Wow, the amp just refuses to let you down. what I mean is, when you bend or enter into a sustain, it just rings it out and waits for you to send it the next signal. it doesn't degrade. you hear every single action the player makes with perfect clarity. it's one of the definitions of pure amplification and signal process.

I remember watching a video of yours at Norman's (or Carter's?) where you mentioned (a saw a few) Two Rock amps and thinking that a TClean or something like this would be perfect for you. I even commented something like that, to which you replied "maybe one day" - and here we are. I love Taylor's work and there's a significant learning curve with this model but, depending on how you tackle it, it becomes incredibly fun. Hope to see more of this moving forward.
