All popular modern franchise comes from something else. 40k wouldn't even exist without Judge Dread, Dune and Straship trooper, Star Wars wouldn't even exist without Joseph Campbell studies... And the list goes on... And you can forgot Halo. It has nothing to do here. Halo is not a very deep or original sci-fi setting. All they did or put in the halo series was already in some other Sci-Fi setting before. Its not because this game franchise used a successfull mix of all those tropes that it invented anything. There is nothing in Helldivers which is reminiscent of Halo specifically.

Warhammer 40k came out in 1987. It has inspired like a bunch of sci-fi. Helldivers was inspired by Warhammer. Warhammer has over 400 books and so much lore it’s genuinely baffling. There are multiple alien species and factions within each species. As for “main” sides there is Chaos and non-chaos. Space Marines are the big guys more specifically the blue ones are Ultramarines and are loyal to the Imperium. Their armor weighs 3 tons. On average space marine without armor is 750 pounds and is 7-8ft tall and 4ft wide. They can run 35mph-45mph. They have 3 lungs, 2 hearts, 2 stomachs, acid spit, and are the “basic” super soldiers of 40k. They are called lords because they are literally seen as angels of the God-Emperor (long story). Honestly I could go on and on about just Space Marines (Adeptus Astartes is what they are called in-universe)

Warhammer 40k doesn’t do goodguys (there's clear badguys though). There isn't a single faction in 40k which hasn't committed lots of warcrimes. Even the best factions have done a few terrible things, though occasionally they feel bad about it. Now there's definitely characters who are pure evil and others trying to fix things in very fucked up ways. So essentially protagonists and antagonists. That said, 80% of the factions in 40k would read the Geneva Convention as an instruction manual instead of a list of what not to do. The other 19.9999999998% of the factions would consider that children's play and laugh at the lack of imagination in that book. Especially the Dark Eldar, as extreme torture is literally how they stave off demons eating their souls. There's two groups, the Salamanders and Lamenters (both Space Marines chapters, but colored different than the Ultramarines in this game) who probably combined barely number 1,000 people in a universe where a single battle can have 25 million... just might be considered goodguys. Though both have done a few bad things. Theyre the 0.0000000002% left out of the above. Both have nearly been wiped out several times because of how selfless they are (for regular humans anyways, but not for traitors, mutants, witches, heretic, or xenos/aliens... those they kill with extreme prejudice, even if theyre children. I told you, 40k doesn’t do goodguys) A good way think think of 40k is humanity has stopped nearly all of our current bigotry, but they swapped it out for different things. So Racism is gone and has been replace with xenophobia. Basically why care what color someones skin is when you have aliens trying to eat, murder, rape and/or torture you? Better to unite and kill them first. Now, Orks is 40k are weird when compared to other versions of orcs in different franchises. Essentially here theyre a single gender fungus, who get more intelligent the bigger they get. They also have a collective belief system that breaks the laws of physics, if they think a rock with the word vroom vroom painted on it makes it a car engine... well it will work as a car engine, until someone else tries to drive it. An ork has literally time traveled, killed his past self so he could loot his favorite gun off his own corpse so he could have one favorite gun for each hand... but he's too stupid to realize he technically should have died. Ironically if he ever realizes it, he will only at that point fall over dead because causality will have finally caught up to him then. Orks are the comic relief of 40k.

Those meteors that keep falling in the Space Marine cinematics ARE actually ships! Or, well, "ships" is a bit to sophisticated of a word to describe them but- The Orks are a race that have what is essentially the power of imagination, which means that if enough orks believe something, it will actually come true. So if enough orks believe that a giant meteor, or as they are refered to, "Roks" can function as a working spaceship, it quite literally will!

Space Marine power armor differs in weight a bit from author to author if they bring it up at all, mostly in whether the roughly 1 ton is metric or imperial. There are also different types of Space Marines but I *think* their armor weight balances out because while Primaris are bigger their armor is more efficient also. In both cases they're genetically engineered super soldiers, the methods differ. This info is excluding the 100+ different chapters that differ in equipment weight, for example the traitor legion of the Iron Warriors generally favor heavier equipment. And while many have answered this already, it's Warhammer 40k, because it's grim dark basically everything is evil. Imperial Humans are one of the more evil factions since the dwarves where reintroduced, though Chaos Humans are even more evil.

First thing. There are no good guys in Warhammer. They're all pretty bad but for different reasons. Some are just less awful but still awful. It's called 40k cause it takes place 40k years in the future. Third, the event where you said they were fighting each other is correct. It's called the Horus Heresy. It's one of the coolest but convoluted events in Sci fi. There's over 30 books on it, I believe. The ritual where they get their armor is one of the most holy events for a marine. The dudes in red are the Mechanicus and they're responsible for building, maintaining, designing all of the weapons, tools, and armor for the Imperium. They even have their own military called the Skitarii. They're also incredibly creepy. And awesome. The Orks are actually fungus. Basically mushrooms with an anger problem. They don't really care about politics or the state of the galaxy. They just look for a fight. As long as they're fighting, they're happy. They use their teeth as currency. The clans whose teeth grow fastest, have more "money".

The Warp is a dimension of immaterium that exists alongside our own. It's filled with the influence of the Chaos God's. The Imperium uses it as a wormhole to travel across the galaxy. But they need what are called Psykers, who use their abilities to shield the ships from the energies of the warp as they travel. If the field fails, an entire ships crew can suffer the most horrific things. Watch the movie Event Horizon, you'll understand what I mean :)
