Why air down on a packed road surface? Doesn't that make tires more susceptible to puncture if you hit a pothole?
@ravenfeather7087
@ravenfeather7087 5 жыл бұрын
@@Scott___T I'm not an expert but I suspect the higher the pressure is in a tire the greater the propensity for a puncture from a sharp object. With lower pressure the wall or bottom may give a bit thereby avoiding the punch through. With higher pressure there is no give and that combined kinetic energy is going somewhere and in this instance the pointy object may go through or penetrate the rubber to some degree. In regard to a pothole specifically, I think the greater damage potential is to the tire's rim especially if the pressure in the tire is low. Under lower pressure the momentum of the vehicle is going to slam the tire's rim into the distal rim of the pothole (the lower pressurized tire will provide less resistance). My personal opinion is that in regard to potholes specifically lower pressure makes it less likely the tire will be punctured however it makes it more likely the rim will be bent by a severe impact. He's running his tires at what I consider a good medium pressure. Probably too low for good handling and tire longevity on hard surface road but he's apparently adjusting to those pressures for soft dirt roads. Depending upon how much weight he's carrying and the thickness/rigidity of his sidewalls of course. HIgher pressure in tires of course increases wear and tear of steering and suspension components because they provide less cushion to impacts from road irregularities.
@Roarmeister2
@Roarmeister2 4 жыл бұрын
@@Scott___T 1. The road isn't that packed. Often has loose gravel, other spots are hard washboard. 2. The rock they use for gravel is sharp shale.

We did a similar trip when I was a kid from Monterey, CA to Fairbanks, ALASKA in 1969 with a station wagon and camper. My Dad was in the Army and we moved to Alaska for three years. It took seven days but I will never forget it. I was epic. I5 gave me my spirit of wanderlust which I passed along to my kids as well. Awesome vids.

Hi, the Dempster highway has shachl, a flat rock like gravel which may get imbedded and cut the tire. Decreasing the tire pressure gives a softer tire, decreasing the likely hood of shachle getting into the tire. Hey I lived in the Yukon for 20 years. The road to Tuk is an engoneering marvel, perma frost was covered with very thick pads, then gravel hauled in up to 20 feet deep. Mosquitoes: many years ago, had a spruce tree off the deck and wasps, usually when it gets dark, a high pressure water spray will wash the nest away and they are gone. But in this instance I had to use long shot bug spray, it was quiet outside, no wind. Sprayed at about a 75 degree angle the length of my arm, then moved out of the spray. Going back, wasps gone, flies gone, mosquitoes gone and cutting the grass was peaceful and enjoyable. There after every week , 3 circle sprays did the yard. Also had worked with Yukon government, they provided the equipment and checmical to treat a tourism area.......same theory, the mist settles down, HAS to be no wind. Hope this helps. and also keep an old shirt sprayed with Deet, do wash it in the summer, it also helps to keep bug away.

A few years back my dad had a dream to drive over the ice roads on the Arctic Ocean into Tuktoyuktuk. Unfortunately he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and was given limited time to live. In 2017 the ice road was going to officially close for good because they had just built a dirt road highway leading to Tuktoyuktuk to replace it. My dad and I decided to make the trip up because it was now or never. We went through the famous Dempster Highway. For the most part it was a nice drive, but we were quickly reminded how dangerous Mother Nature could be when a snow storm came through. Luckily we survived and accomplished our goal. Since then my dad has moved on to the next life, but I am left with fond memories spending time with my dad in the wilderness and Arctic Circle. Also, I remember that gas station =)

Don’t hate me, but we drove the Dempster 34 years ago mosquito free. September 1984, we got snow in Dawson which killed all the bugs. I’d rather have it be a bit chilly than deal with skeeters. My tires say run at 35 psi cold. I set them to 33 psi. Tires are 4 years old and about 5-6mm of tread left so this was this last year of use. I averaged 70 kmh on the road to Tuk towing a 1200 lb. teardrop trailer. The trailer ran at 40 psi. No cuts, no punctures. Yes, I was pleasantly surprised at the campground fees - $12 including wood at all Yukon campgrounds. The card lock gas stations were not an issue for me but for some reason, the American tourists more so than anyone else (even the Europeans and Australians) had problems figuring out how to use them. 3 Americans ahead of me gave up in frustration trying to fillup at one location. Others needed coaching. Simply read and follow the instructions.

Thinking about doing this drive if the covid marshal law ever lifts, but as beautiful as it is, holy smokes is that ever a long way and I have to cross Canada from Ontario to get there. What an adventure though. Love your rig. My only concern is how to cook on one of those all rain days. I have converted a 5X10 cargo trailer to a camper for that reason only. Nothing like cooking in the rain to dampen one's spirits. BTW, I am sure you know this but bears love berries. Always keep your eyes open. Great video
