No regrets building and living in my log home . It was labor intensive and extremely satisfying and made it my home for 30 years . The downside is the effects of the physical beating one takes in accomplishing the task . I just turned 80 and lived in my log home for thirty years and am now reminded on a daily basis of every hand , wrist , elbow , shoulder , hip, knee and ankle that I own . I haven't quite figured out how to rebuild a body , but I'm working on it .

I have almost the opposite of you. I've given 15 years to the Canadian Army. I have pain almost everywhere (hands, ears, knees and back, mostly). I'm not even 40 and I feel like I'm 60. I'm super disatisfied with modern life and I yearn for having my quiet piece of land where we can grow food and raise animals. Problem is how can I afford such hard work when my body can't follow anymore. And how do I keep my family fed if I can't use my body to provide them (I have an office work because it doesn't require as much from my body).

You’re an artist who is driven by a vision and a passion to your ideal. I grew up in rural Colorado in the forties and fifties and this is how our family lived by choice. Simple. I understand what you mean. You are building your cabin and your lifestyle using simpler tools that give you a greater sense of accomplishment; they make you work your body- muscles and brain. There is something so very rewarding knowing that we can take care of ourselves. Our family grew all of our own vegetables, fruits and raised various livestock, from chickens, ducks, turkeys, to goats, rabbits, and later a cow or two from time to time. We had an outhouse, a pump in the kitchen for all of our water needs, bathed once a week heating the water in large, galvanized buckets on the wood/coal burning stove in the kitchen. Our recreation was playing board games in the winter, playing outside with my siblings all seasons of the year and climbing trees and boulders for the fun of it. We fished for relaxation but also to dry and can any extra trout and catfish, for winter. We never passed-by wild berries or apples growing alongside a road or in a field and would bring them home to make applesauce or applebutter or jam. We grew up healthy and strong and never were sick. I long for those days. They never left my heart and that is one of the reasons I so enjoy my KZbin time vicariously living through your adventure. Thanks for taking the time and visiting with us on your front porch. I feel as though you are talking a friend.

You have nailed it precisely. At most 60 I went to the woods to get away from the "static" because it was overwhelming. Everyone driven by money and materialistic ideals. My son said to me "you've made living work". He's right, I have to work at making sure my water supply is adequate and clean, harvest enough wood to get me through the long winters here in Maine and collect enough energy through solar and water power to sustain my power needs for my basic lifestyle. There is an immense satisfaction and emotional well being derived by being more self sufficient. I also believe it is an innate desire in humans and most of us have missed that step and therefore are never quite truly spiritually fulfilled.

I just had a similar conversation with a friend lately. Society has everyone thinking we all need to live a certain way and we don't. I don't think people necessarily want to do less. Rather they want to do work that is fulfilling, rewarding and that they can see directly benefits them or their family/friends/community. I bet most of the work you do for your employer feels pointless and of little real value to anyone? I work a similar job, and I know it does for me. Yet things like splitting wood, building and maintaining things are hard work but I find them incredibly fulfilling, because I can see the direct benefit - this wood is gonna keep me warm, this thing I'm building will keep my home tidy etc. It's not that people don't want to work these days. It's that 90% of the work we're forced to do is pointless, soul destroying and we don't even get paid enough to really make that soul-sucking feel worthwhile.

You have built three homes all by yourself. Each log on your property. It’s amazing what you have done. I think the time you have taken to do things right, the way you have, has been such a blessing to you. Even your daughter has followed your steps. And we all watch with amazement. I remember the day you left the 40 yr grind. Now look what you’ve accomplished? I would say your transformation could not had been better timed. Look what’s happening to this world? You are in the most healthy lifestyle anyone could be in. And out of the rat race. God bless you.

I've watched since, essentially, the beginning of your journey. I used to think that you were crazy for NEVER using power tools (first cabin build). However, I understood the principle behind your reasoning. There is nothing quite so satisfying as producing with your own two hands. My life has finally gotten to a point where I am able to mimic, in some sense, what you are doing. I have one foot in modernity and one foot in nature, and while the balancing act can be challenging, the lifestyle is rewarding. Fulfillment, for me, comes in the form of creating things, fixing things, and raising food and animals. You have been, and remain, an inspiration for all who watch, and your choices are just that; they're YOURS, and no one can define 'happiness' for you. I would say, based on your followers and views, most agree with your choices, because (a lot of) people watch to escape their reality, so I believe you give them a dream of what could be. For those who enjoy your channels, I believe watching you awaken their primordial self; one that has been buried by years of a progressively easier lifestyle. Of course, we must recognize that some just watch to be entertained. Either way, you've got our attention! God bless you and your family.

@@jebdjdjsbdhjd Shawn has a background as a contractor and obviously has done a lot of building in his life. As a builder, I can tell you, just watching him work, that he has had a lot of practice at it. Like he explained in this video, he has been building cabins since he was a teenager. Just the will and mindset to tackle a simple cabin build with basic tools will teach you a tremendous amount. There isn’t too much black magic in the use of a tape measure, handsaw, level, hammer, nails… but as the saying goes, “Opportunity is most often missed because it comes dressed in overalls and looks like hard work.“ I have watched Shawn’s channels for at least a couple years now… The big thing he has is motivation and intelligence. He does his homework, but mainly just gets off his ass and works hard at building his dream. I believe he has had some history as a consultant and he makes some money off this KZbin channel, obviously, plus I believe he sold his former property, so he has income streams from a few different places. I salute the man. He has figured out how to live this life, making beautiful things and teaching others along the way. 👍🏼 Click on his “My Self Reliance“ channel and watch the early videos…

Peter, you’re not alone. I’m in similar circumstances. Just clicked past 25 years at the same company, single and with very limited social interaction (on purpose). It can be lonely but I’ve learned to embrace it and focus on things that don’t suck. Make goals, no matter how trivial or stupid they seem and then increase them incrementally. Dream big, set a long term goal to work towards and go for it! You are in charge not the world. Don’t let your misery and suck be what defines you! Don’t throw in the towel and settle for it. I too lost my Dad 10 years ago along with all the plans of spending time with him. My life today at age 48 is a grind but it’s not without purpose or desire to work towards a rewarding post career existence. When I started I promised myself at age 55 Lord willing, I’m done and off to be free and explore the rest of my life on my own terms. Time waits for no man, go see what’s out there! The worst that could happen is suck and misery, the best that could happen is ??????? I wish you luck!

There is no such thing as "aimless" motion. Even the mouse on a spinning wheel believes he has a purpose for chasing his tail. Likewise, the inmate who continually paces back and forth in a 6ft cell. There is ALWAYS method to any motion. You are simply imposing a subjective value system on someone else's motor movements. He who wanders is not necessarily lost. He who claims to be found (ie. woke) insists the world move in psychological lockstep.

If dizziness was your objective, then you could say you succeeded; if it were building a log cabin in the Canadian wilderness, you've failed. It is a bit strange to compare Mr. James to a mouse on an exercise wheel or a prisoner in a cell. The latter two would most likely be doing something more "directed" if they were not confined by their circumstances. I also cannot see how remarking that Shawn need not concern himself with the opinions of detractors is an insistence that the world move in "psychological lock-step" - quite the opposite. There is nothing subjective in noticing that nothing is accomplished by simple motion as opposed to directed action.

And at least for me, what I'm taking away from this discussion is, that the process of the build is just as important as the finished product. I send him constant prayers from Pondicherry, India and know his very being has effects seen or subtle throughout the planet. Bless him and his inspiration to thousands...🙏🏻

I agree. It all depends on the point of view. So, alone, a cabin done in how much? About two years? And I have two examples, my father and a friend that built houses with modern materials and techniques, but also almost alone. Some help here and there, but both finished in seven years. Sure, the cabin is not finished, but still is half of the time. On the other hand in those two examples they needed to work also to get money needed for some materials. So in the end the time spent was maybe similar. Also inefficiency in producing own food is compensated by quality. Sure, I buy my food cheap, but is garbage, and a poisoned one. But I do not find fulfilling digging the dirt. I did it for a while, it was fulfilling then. But now with the world at my finger tips, I rather trade those healthy future years, for few years of sedentarism, but full with knowledge and new things. I am glad that he pointed this out. He make this things looking so easy, but is not easy at all. Few can adapt to this life style. Sure, all of us will enjoy a week or a month of nature, relaxing, or eventually some chores, but in time the downside will make us miserable. And there are plenty of downsides, the bugs, the cold, the rain the mud, so on. So, as he pointed, the balance is the key. Good speech.

. . . from my observations in 62 years you've hit the nail squarely, a beautiful and instructive spontaneous inner dialogue! Thank you. This particular materialistic society we find ourselves in doesn't really allow much growth and mature the emotional faculty as in humanities indigenous past, most often technology compounds this issue creating a crutch and distraction from the true inner Being ... Places like India are, "More inclined to the Spiritual side of things." I see a man who has found some peace in himself and is never alone! Keep the creativity flowing, working for love for loves sake alone, everything else comes from that. Hugs. 💖🙏🌻 "The value of an incarnation in the west is that you will discover money will not bring you happiness." - Meher Baba ... always found this quote revealing.

You hit the nail in the head. It’s the satisfaction of having built something with your own hands that is rewarding. For some it might be sewing, knitting, building things out of stone, or metal or canning your fall harvest to have food for your family. All are satisfying. I don’t have a fraction of the talent and craftsmanship you display. I feel a similar reward when I build a garden work table, or a chicken coop or a shelf. I think we were created to do things with our hands. With the world getting more and more stressed for all the many reasons, you bring peace and tranquillity. We can decompress watching you build incredible things with simple tools. Some of us are older and can’t do some of the things you do, but we can still enjoy it by watching. I for one really appreciate what you do. Thank you.

Good chat. You live a daily lifestyle that many other people would spend big money to look forward to do for a week or two, and have super memories of, the rest of their lives. For others of us, living off the land for a couple weeks in the Canadian wilderness hunting, fishing, letting your beautiful dog play and roam freely without a tether, is a nearly unattainable dream. God bless you guys. I'm grateful to be able to watch your gift of a life through the youtube peephole. Ty.

crazy isnt it? Grandma used to tell us we would give our lives...lives(!) to live in the cities. And now after being so (im 3rd? 4th generation) paying half our salaries to "return to the wild" (like in your words, zm2yo9cm5w - "spend big money...just for a week or two") if we keep letting conglomerates tell us what "is" and "what isnt" it would be a cycle....and cycle of pain..and going arounds..endless pain of going in circles while their pockets are lined with each circuit (ours, that is). Praying for liberation during my lifetime. One can dream? _(thats my way of saying "Na-aaah. No way anyone lets go of 'hamsters' that easily.")_

When I was working I worked 8+ hours a day, but when I was at home, I still thought about and worried about the things going on at work. I think most of us cannot just lay it down when we leave the office. This issue is what cause's the mental health challenges in my opinion. Building a cabin by yourself in the woods certainly has its' own stresses but doing it on your own time table, in fresh air and sunshine has to help one deal with it.

You are completely right. For example this year, at age 62, I was never better in my head than when I dug foundations between two trees through a ton of roots, by hand, shovel, spade and pickaxe, in a clay soil hardened by drought, by a temperature of 36 degrees Celsius, to create an exterior staircase composed of concrete pavers. I missed fainting at least twice from the heat and energy I had to expend digging and chopping, but lord it did me good. I look forward to next year and the beautiful season for the next project.
