There is absolutely nothing wrong with having some solar panels to make life comfortable. You're still off-grid, you're still being self-sufficient, you're still building and living the life you want. You want your wife and daughters to be comfortable beyond what you have. Your home is growing out of love and that's always wonderful.

I have no issues with any choice Shawn makes. This is his cabin and way of life. I think even off grid you need some form of means to generate/produce electricity. I have no issues with solar, batteries, etc. Heck wind and even larger permanent solar panels and a battery bank would be perfectly fine in my book.

As much as we hate to admit it, there comes a time in life, when these "comfort" things become even more important. Approaching 75, I can't split a lot of wood anymore. Maybe enough for a campfire, but certainly not enough to heat our home. Grew up with wood heat and pulling water from a well, one bucket at a time. Today, I appreciate having a faucet and a flush handle. Allows me to stay in my home! Lord, willing, Shawn and his wife, will reach an age, where what they put into their homestead today, will be what keeps them there when wood splitting becomes too difficult to do each day.

My husband and I both had different dreams...He wanted to live on a homestead/farm and I wanted to live on a houseboat. After we found out that my husband had terminal cancer I decided his dream was more important than mine. I have to say I actually love living on our homestead. Caring for the livestock brings me a pleasurable and rewarding experience. I love being able to raise our own food and living in a cabin style home has been really fun to decorate. Being surrounded with trees and away from the city life has been peaceful and way less stressful. Hopefully in time your wife will feel the same as I do. I am so glad that I can spend the last days with my husband living his dream.

When you said they use sewing machines at the local classes are they using the machines to piece the tops? I sew my tops by machine and then I hand quilt it. You should go to a class and check it out. They may be able to help you get started. Also check to see if your area has any quilt groups, try posting on Facebook to see if anyone knows of a local quilt group.

I've been in the midst of finally getting my own house sold, so you & your wife have my deep sympathies on the cleaning & clearing out, the downsizing, the choosing (sometimes all too rapidly) through what to keep and what to sell or donate. With that said...I think it's both brave and wonderful of you to open up about these things. You're leading by example. You clearly feel there is nothing wrong, and everything right, with being able to change plans, make compromises, and have a close, loving, and utterly healthy relationship between two people who aren't identical in tastes and needs (since it's healthy to have your own interests as well as common interests with your beloved). That's a really good role model for other relationships to emulate, even if the actual details will be different in their own lives. You're both willing to try, both willing to bend a little, and both willing to realize that these things make you stronger, not weaker, as a couple. And you, Shawn, are exemplary in your emotional strength, being willing to share these things for the sake of others.

That was the life my father loved so much, but my mother not so much. Later on they came into an agreement when my mother moved to the city to be with my brothers, that my mother will live in the city permanently, and my father will go to visit them once a month to see them and buy supplies. All his life my father refused to go live in the big city. He just hated to be away from nature, and his wonderful and simple life. This arrangement worked, they were married for over 65 years, they love each other till the end.

'I think your wife understands that it is never a bad thing to reinvent yourself a bit. When we retired, we began taking our motorhome and heading south for 3 or 4 months to escape the winters. One year, returning home, I said,"I dunno ... I might be able to do this full time." "Really?", said hubby. Before we got to our state line he had listed the house with a Realtor. We had been living in my absolute dream home ... an 1841 stone farmhouse, all original and filled with my antiques. I would have spent the rest of my life in that home, watching the world go by. We were close to many of the grandkids, lots of friends ... but husband desperately wanted to travel. So ... I took a deep breath and jumped off the cliff! We spent 5 years living full time on the road in our 40' motorhome and it was the MOST fun I have ever had in my life. BEST leap of faith ever.

HaveCoffee, a FWIW..... I grew up on a farm, family of 7, where using an outhouse was the norm for both male and female. Had a slop jar under the bed for night time emergencies that was emptied on the first morning trip to take care of business. *It is the normal thing to do.* It was the necessary thing to do. Thus, it was simply taking it in stride, as a routine part of life. Gripping and complaining didn't change the fact that the outhouse was there for a purpose. Far better and easier than the more primitive ways of accomplishing that same purpose. BTW, yes, our school had modern plumbing. Appreciated it, while at school. Yet, that didn't make it harder to go to the outhouse, as needed. School was school. Home was home. Home was where I lived and wanted to be, regardless of the plumbing arrangement.

Your candor, honesty, and even your humour is so appreciated. Like so many have said, you can bring a person out of a funk. You have such a natural gift of gab. I like to chat in a similar way but most of my long time friends have past at an early age and not everyone gets my humour. So thanks for chatting, displaying some of your cool gifts and giving us a bit more knowledge of your plans with your family. I love that you are using Huntsville as a centre for mail etc., simply because it’s maybe my favourite town. Best wishes to you for ongoing happiness, peace and good health.

The first time I watched one of your videos, I got intrigued and I really liked it,spontaneous ,effortlessly building your log cabin and you just smiled talking to your dog,it was lengthy but I never skipped or forwarded, it’s just captivating watching you hammering, sawing, gathering logs, it’s relaxing watching your videos, soft spoken, talented man, best of luck!

With over 1 million subscribers, the overwhelming majority of whom like you almost as much as Cali, you're going to eventually have to say "please, no more gifts". People are generally wonderful, and very giving when the feel a connection, but many do not understand that "lots of stuff" is one of the things about modern life you are trying to escape. You are a terrific guy, Shawn, and I know you'll likely never do that to people, so you had better make the next project the Log Cabin Museum and Storage Facility. About 50' by 30' should do it, with a 12/12 roof pitch to support a South facing solar panel array which will make NASA proud. I estimate that will keep you busy for at least the next 2 1/2 years, and I doubt anyone would criticize you if you went with timber framing instead of the solid logs. God Bless you and your family, and Good luck with the empty nest situation.

@Tony Lopez what exactly is your problem? Why are you even on this ch.? Are you illegal & finding it quite difficult to hide & prosper? Or do you just not like your life & the poor choices you have made? These reasons, or any other, do NOT give you the right to verbally abuse others (whom you do not even know!). You must be extremely dissatisfied & unhappy with your own life. Everyone can tell by what you are spewing out of that vile mouth of yours. If you can only reply with venom flowing thru your teeth, veins, why do you watch it? We dont like your vibes or jealousy, so pls stay off this ch or at least refrain from sharing your toxicity b/c we DO NOT want to hear it! We come here to share a part of this man's quiet, simple & beautiful life along with his family when he choses to share. So please, people like you do not belong here. You mentioned God but He is far from your heart b/c..."As a man thinkith in his heart, so is he; for out of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks." Prov 23:7. Go find a devils ch to spread your negativity & venom. I am sure if you look long enough, you will find one. But it is NOT here! Or better yet give your heart to the Lord Jesus! We dont appreciate your remarks AT ALL, so pls kindly leave & dont let the door hit you in the ass on your way out!

A very heartfelt video, Shawn. I don’t know how long I have followed, but have found great solace in all of this as I miss the cold snowy winters of Michigan, forests and lakes and the smell of the pines and other things too numerous to mention. Of course viewers know you don’t film everything about your life, but I have been concerned for awhile about the adjustment for both you and your wife as she comes into what essentially had been your space. For most women making a home is part of her DNA and it will interesting to see how this plays out. Also leaving a more social life in town may be a relief or it could leave a great void. It sounds like you have both learned the art of being thoughtful and supportive of one another and I trust you will find a way to navigate these new waters. The gifts you were sent are very touching and indicative of how these channels touch people. A friend used make beautiful quilts and I know the one sent to you must have taken countless hours. A lovely and thoughtful gift. Blessings to you, Shawn, your wife, and Cali.

He is living my dream too. It sounds like his wife supports him as an individual but she is not "the outdoorsy" type....which is too bad because she may not have a desire to be in the wilderness for long periods of time. I hope she can adjust as he has put in a lot of time and effort. They'd likely have a longer life together in nature as it is not only beautiful but very healing....they'd also be in connection with the Earth's Schuman's resonance.

I started off in a cabin without electricity and eventually, with pressures of a young family, went the complete route of electricity, septic tank, proper foundations, lights, the works. It is inevitable. The charm of living in the 18th century wears off soon enough. If we want to go back to the 18th century, all we have to do is wait for the inevitable power failures. Then it is back to lanterns and pulling water from the stream.

The sauna hat is a good thing. Your head will heat up faster than the rest of your body. The felt hat insulates it from the heat allowing your core body to heat up without you 'feeling' over heated. That was a thoughtful and good gift. +1 Ricardo

To find out where one’s passion (outside what we do because of the business of living) it helps to reflect on what one did as a kid, when given the choice - say after school. With that said, there is probably a way to augment your property to support your wife’s, maybe yet undiscovered passion. For example, would the wife like an art or craft studio, a gathering place for women in your area, a place to play music, or maybe a personal library. Looking upon the changes as a unique and great opportunity to attend to a passion, instead of, or in contrast to what is being given up (creature features) seems to be the way to go. I for one as a ceramics (Potter) would love to play with every aspect of the art, whether it be building ones own kiln all the way to digging ones own clay and even sorting through natural events to make glazes. Or, maybe your wife would like to become a herbalist, or who knows what? The point is, there is so much opportunity ahead for her there. Hope you both capitalize on a cross section of opportunities you have and haven’t even considered yet. That said, for every age and mindset, this has got to be the best channel on KZbin. It surely gives so many a place to go to for relief from the complexities and hassles of life. And, who doesn’t love nature, building a dream, the peace that comes through your channel - AND Callie? Yup, you might have to build an art, music, craft or some other studio, and maybe sooner than you think. 😂

My husband just found out he is losing his job. We have dreamed of living in a place not as off grid as your cabin, but certainly without the sounds of highway traffic and visible neighbors. I'm worried about taking the correct steps to find our dream as well. When you spoke of economic downturns coming recently I couldn't help but agree. We are in our early sixties. We are even looking at Canada as a possibility to move to from the United States. It will, however, rely on him finding a position in the energy sector. Specifically the way Canada is pursuing Molten Salt nuclear power plants. The world is evolving and the United States just seems to be an empire in decline.
