As someone who’s worked in wearable tech for 3 different tech companies, I’m super excited about this video. Side note: bands aren’t pure silicone, they’re a mixture dependent on the company, so if you have a latex sensitivity that could be it. Alternatively, some of the silicone bands do tend to retain more debris and moisture than others as part of manufacturing or safety purposes (materials testing), annoyingly nothing you can do for that except clean it a ton. The least skin reactive bands are made from fabric or leather. Metal is also pretty good too but stainless steel can have allergic components in it (nickel).

I like that the ring is a more subtle alternative to a smart watch if you just want to track your vitals but it's way too expensive for what it does considering you can get a fitbit for way less or a current gen smart watch for the same price or less with way more functionality. And making the app subscription based is just insane at that price point. I looked into 3 items: the ring, the Apple Watch and a Fitbit. For budget and the size, I went with a Fitbit. Currently, I have a Fitbit Charge 5. I needed one of the specific features that Fitbit offers: overnight oxygen saturation levels. I have, also, had the Fitbit Sense, which is more like an Apple Watch in size and function. As soon as I could get oxygen monitoring on a smaller watch, I did. With Fitbit, my sleep medicine doctor was able to look at my sleep history and found out that I have a 26 hour circadian rhythm. Meaning my body doesn’t function on a 24 hour schedule. Everyday, my body thinks there are 2 extra hours in the day that don’t exist. Without the sleep tracking, we would still be trying to figure out what my issue is. My medical team and I use my Fitbit as a tool to see what trends we can spot early, so we can try and nip any early signs of illness in the bud. I am very chronically ill, and any dips in my health could mean hospitalization or worse. Fitbit just offered us more of the data I personally needed. Other fitness trackers may work better for others, but that’s my experience.

Wait, so if you don't pay the monthly subscription for the app, you can't use any of the smart features and it basically just becomes a regular titanium ring? Been subscribed for about 6 months, love your channel!!
@pinkpandalover122 жыл бұрын
I recently started working as a researcher who scores sleep data from actigraphy devices so while I’m still actively improving my skills I do have some insights into these kinds of devices. We rely heavily on people tracking their sleep in a diary alongside wearing their devices, especially for naps. A device like this ring probably would benefit from being able to compare it’s autoscoring to information you could input through the app. Anyways this was really interesting, love your videos!
@veelogation38902 жыл бұрын
I would really love if you could tell the device/app when you were sleeping (eg. if you recorded it in a sleep diary) and it if adjusted based on that. That would be amazing. I don't have this kind of device but I borrowed my partner's for a while because I was curious about how my data would look since I seem to go straight into REM sleep. It missed the first minutes or 20 minutes or so of sleep so I suspect it only noticed once I went into early stages or deep sleep, and didn't count that first REM part which would've had higher heart-rate. (I suspect I have narcolepsy since I'll also have to nap sometimes, falling asleep for half a second or a few seconds or more normal longer naps. Sometimes I'll fall asleep part way through a sentence then wake up and finish it.) Anyway all that's to say I'd be somewhat tempted by a device where I could confirm when I slept that it could learn from. Or if I had a button to press when I get into that intensely sleepy state like I'm about to get hit by a wall of sleep.
@pinkpandalover122 жыл бұрын
@@veelogation3890 we actually used to use a device by Philips that had a button on the side for participants to push to indicate when they were in bed and intending to try to fall asleep, and when they got up in the morning. Unfortunately they’re discontinuing making the products in December and will only be supporting the software for a few more years so now we have to use cheaper but not as accurate (in my opinion) devices. So I wish I could recommend checking that out, but if you’re curious I highly recommend looking into participating in a sleep study! You can learn a lot from having people analyze it both through the activity levels, the circadian rhythm analysis, and the diary you fill out. The best results seem to stem from the combination of technological advances as well as experts looking at it holistically :)

Like I could see getting this for my fiancé instead of a normal ring. Or even having someone take the inner band out and fit it to a band we like better. Not only do you not feel so bad paying the price cause it’s a wedding band but it’s also dual purpose. I don’t know. Just a thought. Wouldn’t be for everyone. Personally I think it would be cool if they offered a silicone option similar to those “groove” rings for hikers. Or make it so you can just buy the inside part with the tech and have it fitted to whatever ring you want. Or you send I ring in of your choosing that they can apply the tech band to.

It would have to be consistently not being able to fall asleep at the desired time, though the fact that she can't sleep later than 8 makes the later requirement of DSPD just not there (unable to wake up at a conventionally earlier time). However, there is something called Advanced Sleep Phase Type. It's like DSPD but opposite. It's the inability to "remain asleep until the desired or conventionally acceptable later...wake times". It may be both or either one, but either way, looking into it would be a really good idea Amanda

As someone with the same issue as you regarding the look of smart watches, I was very curious. My issues are these: 1. if you're doing any form of weight training, the ring is most likely going to be an issue. 2. subscription based data retrieval after paying SO MUCH for the ring itself is absurd. The nap thing though seems to be something that many health tracking devices have issues with, as in, if you work nights, you won't be able to use the sleep tracker because it won't consider sleep between certain hours, which I find ridiculous. So yeah, while I like the idea of the ring, I think that in the end it's better to try and find a nicer looking smart watch, and if you're willing to pay a higher price, then there are some that look like proper watches and not weird plastic/metal squares. :)

Back when I had a Fitbit (that could track my sleeping patterns) I would take it off to sleep because it was uncomfortable for me to sleep with it on. Since my arm was under the pillow the weight of my head against the fitbit it would hurt my wrist to keep the Fitbit on at night, this ring could potentially solve that problem since it's smaller. I have a pretty small wrist (the standard smallest band doesn't fit at a natural spot on my wrist on its smallest setting) and even though I have one of the smaller sizes of the watch, it looks a bit oversized on me. I feel like having mine in the gold color and with a light grey/pink band helps it blend in a bit more but its still definitely larger looking than it is when I wear it. The only thing I probably would have a problem with the oura ring about is my fingers are EXTREMELY small as well, so their smallest ring size of a 6 wouldn't fit any of my fingers. If they offered it smaller I might consider it but the fact that they don't even offer one that could fit me is just disappointing.

I only recently heard about the Oura ring and I'm loving the aesthetic of it. I too am a person who dislikes the chunky clunky look of the different fitness tracking watches. I'm hoping to be able to purchase one in the future but, unfortunately, can't do it before the end of October and the change in how many months free one gets.

I like the idea of the ring being a health tracker, but currently I am not really a ring-wearer so I don't know how much I'd like it. Also it sounds like an expensive investment with some little technical flaws that they should work on, as you mentioned. Also additionally having to pay for monthly subscription to get more accurate data is just a marketing tactic, to me.
@Kunstner10042 жыл бұрын
I've been using Oura since Gen2 which was before they introduced the subscription model. In upgrading from Gen2 to Gen3 they had a promotion for all existing users that made them a lifetime member as part of the price (in my case 399 for the Stealth Heritage). If it wasn't for that promotion I probably would not have continued using Oura, despite the fact that I have been following it since its Kitckstarter days.

Honestly, I have a fitbit that kinda does all the same things, so I feel like the price of the Oura RIng price is insane, especially if you still need the membership to really use it.
@noralewis53902 жыл бұрын
Thought about the ring, decided against it because I do like wearing watches, although I went the fitbit route instead of apple watch. Gripes include updates screwing up tracking, irreversible updates, and band irritation (leather bands work better if I trade them out every so often and clean them). Although it does seem like google's cannibalizing fitbit so who knows how long I'll be able to stick with it.

I would just like to say it’s cool to see someone else also say that they don’t like how the Apple Watch looks. I personally hate how it looks, it’s definitely ugly to me. But it is useful so I do use it. Anyway thanks for the video.
@shayverde Жыл бұрын
That's what's interesting about it, it detects illness before you feel anything. Plus it's more comfortable than smart watches and the battery life is really awesome! It tackles a more holistic and wellness approach compared to smart watches that tracks activity and fitness. You can actually protect its beauty without sacrificing biometrics and comfort with an OSleeve.

A paid subscription is so ridiculous, so you are paying 500 dollars for a ring that becomes useless if you don't have the app, and over time that 6 dollars a month will add up, who knows how much you will spend on this. Not worth it. Great video as always Amanda! :D

I too didn’t want a watch health tracker, although for me it’s because I’ve been wearing a Baby-G watch since probably about 2001 and I will not stop. I really didn’t like the idea of wearing what looks like two watches, but the subscription for Oura is insane alongside the ring price. Anyway, I went with Bellabeat (first the Leaf and then I upgraded to the Ivy) and I love it. It just looks like a cute funky bracelet and I get compliments all the time from people who are shocked when I tell them it’s a health tracker. They do have an optional subscription, where you have a wellness coach and access to a bunch more blog posts & articles, but the main functionality of the app is free (as it should be). Plus it cost a lot less (even the latest Ivy+ is the most expensive and it’s still 249, not FOUR HUNDRED SOMETHING JFC).

I'm really excited for the Google pixel watch. I like tracking my health, but after getting the newer fitbit watches, I realized what I love the most is getting notifications sent to my wrist.

I have the same problem with bands when it comes to my Samsung watch. I finally got my self a scrunchie handband on etsy and I freaking love it! Plus I can hand wash & it is matchine washable but you do need to put them in a delicates bag.

A mention on why the sensors glow green or red: that's just the device measuring your heartrate. It doesn't constantly measure your HR, it flashes the light every X minutes to get a reading.

19:17 - I wonder if that is Sleep Apnea related. If it measures O2, id compare it to that time frame see if there is a significant drop in your O2 stat.

Ive had rings fall off, or taken them off while cooking or the like and get lost in the past. I would be so scared of losing this ring at that price point. Im also curious how smooth the pairing/connectivity with your phone is, although I might have just missed that bit in the video.

I've been seriously considering the Oura ring for a while as I want health tracker as I have several health conditions, but hate having my notifications etc coming up on a watch. But having to Subscibe to it is a deal-breaker for me. Not being able to catch multiple naps too, I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, if it can't register my sleep throughout the day, that would take hours of data out of my day.

Fun Fact their name is supposed to be pronounced like "Aura". I can't get over the subscription price. The detailed app is great but if I'm spending that much upfront, then only getting 1 month free it's not worth it especially being Canadian so add like +50% to the ring cost and shipping. I also have issues with silicone bands tried a bunch but they all irritate me. Found the best thing to clean them with was adult toy cleaner since it's made to clean silicone things gently. But I've moved on to a 3rd party resin band. Similar to the chunky metal link bands but is made from resin and doesn't irritate me. Now the only irritation is from heart rate and other sensors touching my skin.

I have a 45mm Apple Watch and it’s comically large on me, lol. Got it for the color since I love the red on red Apple products. I don’t like the feel of the watch itself against my wrist and that alone actually irritates my skin, so I keep it loose all the time so I can stand wearing it since I don’t care that much about the fitness tracking, but having constant access to the time calms me down, having the watch vibrate for notifications is better than my phone since it’s silent to everyone else, and I can play shitty games on it when nothing is happening.
@blu3babyc00l2 жыл бұрын
My FitBit silicone bands also irritate my skin. I got the sport band with the breathing holes and it's better. I wanted all the information you wanted out of a fitness/wellness tracker so I got the Charge 5 fitbit only to find out that some of the more advanced features don't work in my region. I love the steps, heart rate and sleep tracker...it's surprisingly accurate. But I wish I could access the temp features though.

These health trackers work best for people who are aerobic sports athletes. If you're seriously getting ready for a marathon or a triathlon, hrv and reportedly rates are good to have. But if you just want to be healthier and track your activities, an apple watch or a fit bit is probably better as they're more versatile. For what it's worth I'm a pretty fit cyclist and I'm cancelling my whoop cuz I just don't find it worthwhile

I only have a smartwatch in an attempt to shame myself into walking more, I disabled a lot of the features, but it's still not _great_ even when it comes to the basic features imo (other than step tracking) Times my watch has buzzed me for having a high heart rate and ordering me to breathe and relax: - Doing an escape room - Making phone calls to banks - In meetings with my boss (hella embarrassing when there's audible buzzing and I have to tell him that it's because my watch thinks I'm stressed) Times my watch hasn't notified me of a heart rate issue: - All those times I've nearly fainted from my chronic low blood pressure 🙃

@@aim-to-misbehave5674 ooph. Sorry to hear about your bad experiences! It's not feasible for everyday use, but I'm switching back to a chest strap for HR monitoring cuz it's much more accurate as well. Whoop's new sensor can be put in clothing so it can be slipped into a sports bra and get readings by the heart. Not sure if it's any more accurate tho. And it's still not worth the 20 dollars a month it charges.

I am the EXACT same way with my Apple Watch bands. I despise the one that comes with the band originally, it causes skin irritation, and I also sleep with my watch for insomnia reasons, so the solo loops/elastic bands are the only ones I’ll wear anymore. They do get gross, I toss mine in the washer inside a pillow case every week 😂 I work from home as well, the health features are really nice, it was nice seeing you do this review on the ring!! I love your videos ☺️

I have a Withings ScanWatch which is pretty good and just looks like a regular watch with is a big plus for me. And its pretty cheap, it was under $200 when I bought it but is probably more now, but doesn't have any subscription or anything like that. Its a pretty good health tracker but nowhere near a full featured smartwatch, but if all you care about is health tracking and some notifications it will work great.
@Surfer6692 жыл бұрын
I like the idea of the ring. I'd buy it if it was the same price (or at least closer in price) as the watch. I'd also want there to be a free version of the app and a premium version. Because only have a subscription premium version is (imo) too much.
