Houses that are built into hillsides often end up with 'void spaces' that are too small to be used as proper rooms & usually have moisture issues because they butt up against the hillside. They are usually left with service accesses for inspection of the foundation or access to electrical, HVAC or plumbing equipment that is sometimes installed there to get it out of the way.
