The Wild West like you've never seen it before, or a mythological America filled with magic and mystery; this is Arcane Wilds, a new RTS that just released in Steam Early Access. I've covered Arcane Wilds before, but it's finally out of its demo stage and available for everyone right on Steam.
I talk a lot about how RTS games do not innovate anymore, but what I love about Arcane Wilds so much, is that it feels genuinely different and new. It comes down to the concept of a permanent hub that you upgrade over time, to the unit reinforcement system that takes a minute to get used to, and the resource system which is so versatile and makes for intense battles. Or the fact that Arcane Wilds is complete as both a singleplayer and multiplayer experience.

Thanks for the video, Andy. I was looking at this, but I wish that the color scheme looked less silly and that the unit-to-terrain/building scale was better implemented-the unit sizes look too big.

I can see that, although I don't mind it since I find that scale in this genre literally doesnt matter for the vast majority of games

Interesting choice given the coloney the gatling gun as the defining feature of the southern states in the Civil war was having nothing but grit, never ending moral, and seemly all great commanders in the milltary as the CSA government was in the bigging ok at best but by the end they killed my ancestor for the crime of going walking home to Jax florida to take care of his family... And the CSA milltary top leadership was locking in heated debate for months over what to do given my ancestor was not awol as he just left in a hurry and sent letter back to his command as soon as he could which was in a few days... But the half that wanted to set an exemple of what happens to desenters killed my ancestor... And that was not only the last straw but likely the reason why Florida (Not south floridaa they seceded from us after we succeed from the US and we fuaght a two front civil war while being blockaided and was the only state to ever do so..) joined the Union starting the path to rebuild the US of A... So yeah if you want to get the American civil war or really the north verus the south (But florida/Texas) feeling the number thing you should do is have your southern faction be poorer then dirt with limited tech that is like Russian eggeering but well made and just as cheap... Also the gatling gun is a funny exemple as the Union bearly used them even after the civil war. As they were extremely expensive to field both to make and to feed bullets and move around be easier to break then a cannon... Even today any working/shooting replca is isanly expensive even the cheap material and engeering acrate desk toys... So yeah the only way a souern states like faction would have one if they looted it likely in a raid on a factory and smuggled past the Union navy... If anything the colny in a game with this kinda of setting should be the mid grade jack of all trades faction with some tech and some magic... Which the amicain indain like faction should have cheap not magic troops but rare and expensive magic troops who "summon" sprits. Mith the most powerful unit being a thunder bird like spirt who is very OP. But takes the most expensive magic uses out of the match till the thudndr bird is killed or you run out of resorces needed for the cird to be in play or need to your most expensive units to get in the fight... Also the union like faction should be very high tech maybe even steam punk or the on the verge of it.. With the con being everything is very expensive but every unit is powerful but low in headcount... So yeah I love this concpt and tge alpha seems really good it's priced well depending on content ofcorse but gameplay looks great for the price... It's just the factions seem off and very under developed which is fine it seems like the gameplay was most important in development right now which is normal for RTS development... But yeah I would think and research really hard about what people like about the time around the civil war. And make your factions what people expect they should be and give it a twist that is unique to your setting and gameplkay... Because having a setting and using key words locks you in to what people expact from those words... Which as game press for 13 years and showing off thudesnmd of games people never like it when a dev uses key words and the game does not have those key words in it... Twisting expactions when making a whole new fictional setting is the whole idea and what people enjoy the most... But given your south anologe a gatling gun when you have a perfectly normal Union faction that is the onl;y faction in the game that would or should have that tech... As how on earth are some coloniest on some islands going to out high tech the union? Like if anything give tghe colonists the tech the Union IRL never used but was commonly used by pirvite citazens of by Union shoulder bought them shelves... Like if anything the clonists should be a weird mix of cowboy,frontismen and explorers... rather then a southern anologe as your union seems to pretty much be what the Soutner states in the civil war were rather then the union... As if anything other then poor the most common thing people acaste with southern state armies/national guard then and now is they are just old basic US army... Heck even the current Floirda nation guard is pretty much a highly cost effect US milltary.. Like our air national conmbat aircraft are all F-15s and alot of them as they are cheap and carry aton of stuff and are big and fast and easy to fly and operate... So yeah even today Florida being as rich and milltaint as we are still only fund our national gaurd so much.. so we use our limited funds extremely well to make the worlds most cost effective milltary that can still project power and be everywhere at once... Like a mini US milltary... So yeah making the union the normal faction isn't the way to go.
