As a math teacher I noticed that most of the errors come when the inline divide sign is used.

I use bodmas (B-Brackets, O-Orders (powers/indices or roots), D-Division, M-Multiplication, A-Addition, S-Subtraction). So in started by division 3x(3÷3)x3 = 3*1*3

"÷" or "/" or ":" all mean: put parentheses on everything before and another set on everything after(, if more than one term, to a plus or minus). 3÷3÷3÷3=3/3/3/3=3/(3/(3/3))=3/(3/1)=3/3=1. 1+4/2+3 = 1+2+3=6, but 1+4/2*2+3=1+4/(2*2)+3=1+4/4+3=1+1+3=5. not 1+(4/2)*2+3=1+2*2+3=1+4+3=8. So, 3x3÷3x3 = (3x3)÷(3x3) = 1÷1 = 1. The end! To avoid mistakes and arguments: execute those who mix multiplication and division without using parentheses.

This video is wrong. The actual _correct_ answer is: *Both 1 and 9 are correct answers because **_this representation is ambiguous._* This is precisely why _the division symbol (÷) is never used by serious mathematicians_ when representing real mathematical formulas. It has also been shown that the "PEMDAS" rules that are commonly taught *are not how most mathematicians actually do math,* and in fact that in practice, division and multiplication usually _do not actually have equal precedence_ in most cases. For example, if you were to write "3 ÷ 2x", the "2x" is actually a form of multiplication; _however,_ pretty much all actual mathematicians would _always_ interpret that to mean 3 ÷ (2 × x), _not_ (3 ÷ 2) × x as traditional PEMDAS rules would suggest. (PEMDAS is also inconsistent with the traditional operator precedence rules used in most computer languages, so the answer to questions like this can also be different depending on whether they are being asked _in a computing context_ or not.) *In short:* PEMDAS is a lie, and this question can be legitimately interpreted to mean multiple different things. (And I'm pretty sure *this is not actually a "SAT question",* because the people who maintain the SAT are actually very smart and careful, and they would not be so stupid as to include such an obviously flawed question in such a test to begin with...)

Basically this, but I'd disagree slightly: in a purely arithmetical context this is unambiguously 9: processed left to right, all operators equal priority. The expression a/bc though many have said online is processed left-to-right as: a / b * c and that's not true. Scientists use expressions involving implicit multiplication all the time, e.g. exp(E/kT), and the argument of that function has to be interpreted as E / (k * T) for it to be dimensionally correct. The order of operation rules are to help kids, by big-pants time there's more nuance and, particularly, *avoiding ambiguity*. I'm looking at you, power tower, and getting ready to clarify left or right associative as needed Edit: took out some negative signs as they seem to trigger strikethroughs!

You're just plain wrong. By the notation used, and standard math rules, the answer is unambiguously 9, full stop. That said, few actually do it this way, because it makes it easy to make mistakes if you're not paying attention. But you are absolutely, completely wrong that this *specific* expression is ambiguous. Something can be perfectly unambiguous, yet also poor practice. Which is why your final point is probably correct -- it's not a great SAT question, because it's not really testing anything interesting and important, and is simply trying to be a trick question.

Before PEMDAS there was a very old school method that meant that the ÷ symbol was to be interpreted as everything left goes first and everything right goes first, a bit like putting parenthesis around all preceding ÷ and all succeeding ÷. But that is the old days (like pre WW1), today it is PEMDAS and the answer is indeed 9.

Parentheses are automatic if the question uses a division symbol, therefore this is an intentionally ambiguous operation. The answer could either be 1 or 9, but thats not how math works, theres always only 1 answer, meaning theres a problem in the model. The problem is previously stated.

Look at ISO 80000-1. An INTERNATIONAL standard, not a style guide from some university. Direct quote from ISO 80000-1-7.3.3: "These provisions can be extended to cases where the numerator, denominator or both are themselves products or quotients. In such a combination, a solidus (/) shall not be followed by a multiplication sign or a division sign on the same line unless parentheses are inserted to avoid any ambiguity." Oh, and by ISO 80000-2-9.6 "The symbol ÷ should not be used." DON'T USE "GOTCHA" QUESTIONS TO CHECK IF YOUR STUDENTS HAVE UNDERTOOD YOUR HOME MADE RULES.

You really need to stop using headlines with phases like "fools everyone". Maybe headlines like , "Here is and interesting problem" or "Try and find the correct answer to his SAT problem". The answer is 9 by the way.

if 3*3=9 then 9÷9=1 therefore 3*3÷3*3=1 If any division symbol is used, parentheses are automatic, so this question is intentionally ambiguous. Either there are no parentheses and its a mistake or the writer is stupid, which based on the answer being C, its the latter.

3 X 3 ÷ 3 X 3 = 1 3 X 3 / 3 X 3 = 9 Remember ÷ means ( ) / ( ). Literally everything that comes before divided by everything that follows. / just means simple division and follows pemdas.

The symbol "÷" implies a horizontal division line as in a fraction. Therefore, it implies parentheses on both of its sides. Therefore, it has to be re-written as (3x3)/(3x3) which equals 1, which is THE CORRECT ANSWER! Therefore, the term in question is to be read: 3 times 3, all over 3 times 3, which is equal 1, which is THE CORRECT ANSWER! Conclusion: only idiots and assholes use multiplication and division combination without parentheses... :)
@flame811
@flame811 7 ай бұрын
Even if ÷ implied a horizontal division line then it would be (3x3)÷(3)*3, not (3x3)÷(3x3). ÷ doesn't put the rest of the sentence in parentheses, the answer would only be 1 if the question was written (3x3)÷(3x3). so using a horizontal division line 3x3÷3x3 would be written as 3x3 ------ x 3 3 You learn order of operations not much after learning multiplication I don't get how people don't know it.

@@flame811 1. (everything on the left) ÷ (everything on the right). 2. everything on the left is on top of ─────────────── and everything on the right is under it. 3. all 4 numbers (digits) are "3". not "9". 4. you've proven my last point...
